Vaginal Laceration Teaching Project
The family I cared for and had the opportunity to teach was a one-day postpartum mother to a baby boy. The mother was a primiparous and the boyfriend and the patient’s mother was present for the teaching session. The mother had prepared for the birth and bringing the baby home but stated she did not do research for any complications with herself. The birth was vaginal with an epidural and fentanyl. The birth was also a vacuum assist and there was a third degree vaginal tear. In taking these principles into consideration I decided to focus my teaching on the care of vaginal tears as this was the mother’s first pregnancy and she did not prepare teaching for herself. The information was not too complex but it was a lot to learn and take in. The teaching was in the patient’s room with the father and patient’s mother also present. The baby was sleeping at the time of the teaching and only woke up near the end. There were no other interruptions and the room was calm and warm. It was good timing as other family members were not coming in and out of the room and the patient seemed ready and willing to learn. The verbal/written information and me explaining it seemed to work well with the family and there was no confusion in the material. When I came back into the room the patient verbally explained proper cleaning of the perineum area, three interventions she can do help with pain and discomfort, and signs and symptoms of infection and appropriate blood loss before discharge to home. This was all understood before her discharge to home. I then asked if they had any more questions and made sure they were comfortable with everything they needed. I felt my teaching session went well and was a positive experience for both the parents and
