Nursing science and knowledge evolves rapidly, as does all other disciplines. What is known in research today will change and evolve into new knowledge and understanding tomorrow or next year, creating new nursing diagnoses. These diagnoses developed by nurses emanates from NANDA-I, also known as, North American Nursing Diagnoses Association International with the goal of establishing and developing the initial terminology and the related taxonomic structure. NANDA-I is comprised of many volunteer nursing professionals and other organizations functioning collectively with the goal of developing and investigating the terminology and standards required in defining the nursing diagnoses that produce verified outcomes enabling a higher level of care and optimal health. Application of this terminology by the nurse creates a depiction of the patients’ status that any other nurse can understand creating continuity of care. A nursing diagnosis is based on clear and concise health problem(s) that are derived from the patient and identifies the need for a plan of care that is totally amenable by the nurse. This overall framework assists with populating the electronic health record nurses currently utilize for documentation, allowing the nursing diagnosis to change as the patient’s condition evolves; creating individualized patient-centered care.
Nanda’s taxonomy allows the nurse to create individualized care-plans based on the patients’ disease, health or injury processes and the nursing diagnoses, while monitoring the individual for healing and progression. This invaluable terminology also provides measureable information from staff documentation to track and evaluate individual or collective strengths, areas of development and any additional training required generating growth in nurses and improving overall care
