...them into the origin of the discs were not very successful although one of the “old-timers” suggested that they may have been pre-war union badges or tokens. This rekindled my interest in the brass discs so I read all the books about the history of the early Nottinghamshire miners I could get hold of. Many references to the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Association struggle for survival and recognition from its foundation in 1885, to the merger with the Spencer union in 1937, existed. Unfortunately, the historians I read did not attach the same importance to these discs that I did and, not being interested in the union movement, this made my research hard going. However, the few references I did find confirmed that the discs were early union badges. A miner who joined the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Association would receive a badge on payment of a small amount, perhaps included in the joining or renewal fee. He would then wear it as proof of membership using its two small holes to secure it to his cap or jacket lapel. One of my research aims, apart from discovering the history of the badges, was to identify the sites of open-air meetings held by the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Association to search for lost badges. Three meeting places that had not been built over were discovered. The first site I had thouroughly searched and recovered a few badges from. The second was on land owned by a local Baronet who had previously refused me permission to metal detect on his land. This was particularly...

The non-profit charitable organization has existed since 1998 and currently has over 40 permanent collection sites across Canada. Over 25,000 donor clinics are run annually across Canada with17,000 community volunteers and over 4,500 employees keeping the foundation going strong. OneMatch Stem Cell, Marrow Network, National Organs & Tissue registry, and blood donations are run by Canadian Blood Services. Adults 18-59 across Canada compose the majority of donations. Canadian Blood Services is a noble cause that has positive brand image. The diverse recognition program recognizes all those that support them. The biggest obstacle Canadian Blood Services is lack of awareness amongst potential donors and volunteers. It is not a top-of-mind charity and people do not know about recognition events held for participants at local and national levels. Canadian citizens take this service for granted. There is also plenty competition for people’s time and money. Tough economics times make it harder for people to focus on charitable causes because they need to help themselves. However...

...Airport Security Abstract Through the history of aviation the significance of airport security has progressively increased. Since the catastrophic terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, many changes have taken place at airports to prevent such an attack from occurring again. The purpose of this paper is to: outline airport security procedures, discuss the different technologies involved with airport security, as well as examine the components of airport security. In addition I will also discuss the Transportation Security Administration’s role in our nation’s airport security. Airport Security Airport Security is an essential of life both in America and throughout the world. Without airport security our airports would not be able to function and terrorist attacks like those of September 11th, 2001, would be more common. Passengers would be afraid to fly in fear of such a terrorist attack happening again. The airline industry would lose more revenue from lost ticket sales. Then the airports themselves would lose money from the lack of passengers boarding through their gates. Finally this lack of security would trickle down to the entire economy not only in the communities surrounding the airport and aviation industry, but to the nation’s economy as well. To keep this economic failure associated with another terrorist attack from happening, our nation must take the appropriate measures to prevent it. “Airport security procedures are designed to deter...

...Timmothy Jewett History 231 12/02/11 Research Project Outline How did the Seattle Sounders FC change Major League Soccer? The Seattle Sounders was once a struggling soccer franchise that was not popular in the great Northwest. The franchise wasn’t even a part of the Major League Soccer (MLS) because it wasn’t followed enough. Now the Seattle Sounders is one of the most popular soccer teams in America because of the loyalty of the fans in Washington. This outline will show the impact the Sounders have had on the MLS and Washington State. Talk of Seattle having an MSL soccer team: * June 14th 1994, announcement that Seattle would not be included among the first seven cities to be awarded an MLS team. * Later that year Seattle MLS organizers began working with the University of Washington to secure use of Husky Stadium as an interim stadium while they pursued the construction of a permanent soccer-specific facility. * At the end of 1994 the first season of MLS was postponed until 1996. In 1996 owner of the Seattle Seahawks, Paul Allen, works with the city to build a stadium: * Owner Paul Allen worked with the city of Seattle to build a new football stadium for his football team, the potential of an MLS expansion team that could be a co-tenant helped drive public support for the effort. Problems for Seattle: * By 2000, the MLS was moving away from league-operated teams to investor-operated teams, so wealthy individuals would need to step forward for...

...Hand Hygiene Change Project Capstone NU296 September 18, 2013 Introduction The lack of hand washing and/or hand sanitizing is a leading cause of nosocomial infections in healthcare facilities not only here in Nevada, but across the United States. Hand washing is one of the biggest contributing factors in stopping the spread of infections throughout the healthcare environment. Nosocomial infections could be dramatically reduced by monitoring and enforcing hand washing and/or “gel in, gel out” policies of each facility. This could also lower the length of stay per patient, and greatly reduce the medical care cost per patient. Analyze the current situation and provide evidence based resources to support the need for change and your proposed plan. Include ethical, legal, or standards of care implications. Washing hands as promptly and thoroughly as possible between patient contact and after contact with blood, bodily fluids, secretions, excretions, and medical equiptment contaminated by patients is a huge element in infection control. Hand hygiene is recognized by infection prevention and control experts as the single most important intervention in decreasing the spread of infection in healthcare facilities. Unclean hands are the main transporters for germs between people and inanimate objects (i.e. blood pressure cuffs, bed rails, call lights, etc…). It is imperative to practice...

...design included 100 consecutive fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections performed on patients with radiculitis from either herniated nucleus pulposus or lumbar spinal stenosis. Radiation exposure was monitored with the assistance of a radiological technologist (RT) who allocated four dosimetry badges to all physicians performing fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections on consecutive patients being treated for radicular pain. The badges were placed on the ring finger, glasses and both the inside and outside of the lead apron worn by the physician. In addition, the RTs also wore a marked badge outside his/her lead apron. A control badge was placed 67 inches away from the fluoroscopy table, and a second control badge was located in a desk over 500 feet away from the procedure, to monitor ambient radiation. The average fluoroscopy time per procedure was 12.55 seconds. The average/cumulative exposure per procedure was 4.10/410 mREM at the “ring” badge, 2.47/247 mREM at the “glasses” badge, 3.98 /398 mREM at the “outside apron” badge and 0.15/15 mREM at the “inside” apron; no radiation was detectable at the “outside room” control badge. The RT’s average exposure during these procedures was below the limit of detectability. . Radiation exposure to the physician...

...Kelsey Bradbury/COMM 427 THE GROWING ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN TOURISM MARKETING In early November, marketing and public relations professionals from tourism industry offices across the United States attended the Second Annual Symposium on the Use of Social Media in the Tourism Industry (“Social Media Tourism Symposium,” 2011). The topic of the conference speaks to a growing trend in tourism promotion. Attendees focused on best practices for interacting with consumers via social media channels—an important skill, as social media is fast becoming one of the most vital, cost-efficient tools in tourism marketing. Effective use of social media has been proven to boost the number and length of visits, as well as visitor satisfaction and number of return visits. Destination Marketing Organizations and Tourism Marketing Strategy The tourism industry as a whole encompasses a variety of different service and consumer product industries. One type of tourism office is a destination marketing organization, or DMO. The goal of DMOs is to increase tourism to a particular city, state, or region. DMOs seek to achieve their goals by branding the area as a whole and advertising that brand; promoting specific institutions, restaurants, accommodations, attractions, activities, and events that take place in the area; and offering information and assistance to visitors. The Growth of Social Media Social media, which Merriam-Webster defines as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites...

...this. The phenomenal change in the food retailing landscape over the last ten years clearly shows that consumers are more than happy to change brands. That change is not just based on price, but price combined with customer experience. It’s Service Checkers time Following the continuously growing interest in service quality offered by large self-service grocer’s shops, INTERNATIONAL SERVICE CHECK decided to carry out a wide survey covering 8 market chains, in 8 Bulgarian cities, conducting 32 checks. The survey lasted since April 12th until April 24th, 2012. For the purposes of this research we did separation of the companies on the basis of their format as follows: outlets which can offer a service by an employee to the client we have called Supermarkets, and on the other hand outlets that rely totally on self-service we have called Discounters. All other similarities of these names with their scientific or commercial definitions are coincidental. |Supermarkets: |Discounters: | | |...

...Automated Attendance Tracking System A card reader is an automated system that collects class attendance by students swiping their DeVry ID cards for every scheduled lecture and lab session. The card readers are conveniently located in each classroom and lab. Additional individual instructor policies for determining tardiness and absence are outlined in course syllabi. Remember to swipe your card for every class you attend. Many students have shown absences (especially in labs) for classes that they have been attending because they have forgotten to swipe. Please remember to swipe your card for lecture and lab attendance. If you forget to swipe your card, you may request that your instructor submit an 'Attendance Revision Form' to update your attendance. Check with your instructors (or course syllabus) to find out whether or not their attendance recording policy will allow for modifications after the class session has been conducted. Please do not get into the habit of swiping more than one card. It is in your own best interest to be the one in control of your ID card and your attendance record. Swiping your classmates' cards can be considered a violation of Article III of the student code of conduct and is subject to the disciplinary actions outlined in Article V of the Student Handbook. Students are not allowed to use an instructor's ID code or card to record attendance for a class. This is for your protection. If the instructor is running late, please wait for the instructor...

...Segmentation – dividing the marketing into distinct groups * Targeting – deciding which of these groups to communicate with, and how to talk to them * Positioning – how the product or brand should be perceived by the target groups * Messaging - delivering a specific message in order to influence the target groups 1. Segmentation Dividing potential customers into discrete groups is vital if you want to increase the success rate of any communications message. If you don't know who you are talking to, it's unlikely you will get much of a response. Who are the potential customers? How many sub-groups should you divide them into? How do these groups differ? Hopefully, most of this information will be readily available from your market research. Once you have an idea of the customer, you should further drill down to explore them in more detail. What are their media consumption habits? What are their expectations and aspirations? What are their priorities? How much disposable income do they have? What are their buying habits? Are they likely to have children? How many holidays to they take a year? How much money do they...

...service. I understood that there are key elements involved with marketing process; the 4P’s for goods and the 7P’s for services. The 7P’s of the marketing mix are price, place, product, promotion, people, process and physical environment. By understanding, the marketing mix a corporation will have more knowledge about how to plan, distribute and promote their products. Without these fundamental elements, it is unlikely for managers to formulate a feasible marketing plan. For a business to be successful, an appropriate composition of the marketing mix should be appropriately used. To be able to dominate the market, managers have to understand the needs of their consumers and provide excellent services to them in order to build a strong brand name. Toyota’s Principles of Marketing When these principles are explored at Toyota, we found out that Toyota could have a more successful marketing principle by ensuring they provide...

...Measuring Team Creativity Through Longitudinal Social Signals Peter A. Gloor, Adam Almozlino, Orr Inbar MIT Center for Collective Intelligence 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge MA 02139, USA pgloor@mit.edu Wei Lo Computer Science and Technology department Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, P.R. China Shannon Provost McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin Austin, TX, USA Summary Research into human dynamical systems has long sought to identify robust signals for human behavior. We have discovered a series of social network-based indicators that are reliable predictors of team creativity and collaborative innovation. We extract these signals from electronic records of interpersonal interactions, including e-mail, and face-to-face interaction measured via sociometric badges. The first of these signals is Rotating Leadership, measuring the degree to which, over time, actors in a team vary in how central they are to team’s communication network’s structure. The second is Rotating Contribution, which measures the degree to which, over time, actors in a team vary in the ratio of communications they distribute versus receive. The third is Prompt Response Time, which measures, over time, the responsiveness of actors to one another’s communications. Finally, we demonstrate the predictive utility of these signals in a variety of contexts, showing them to be robust to various methods of evaluating innovation. Introduction In this paper we introduce a...
