The market I visited with my group was New Leaf. I will be recounting and detailing the store itself, background checking the food I chose, and how this market compared to the others we saw in class. I remember walking into the store and getting the vibe that this was a definite vegan friendly place. The store was colorized in natural tones with plenty of lighting that almost felt like natural sunlight. On one main wall, they proudly displayed a map that showed the farms where everything in their store came from which was at most in a 200 mile distance.

As for tracing the butter, all I had to do was type in the name of the business and the Florida town. Results came up right away and I found their website. These small business owners were most proud of their cows and how well they were treated. This made me think about how in none of the readings did they expand upon how the origin of a food product “felt”. Probably because we were mostly reading about plants and vegetables, but either way, It felt good to know that this butter came from happy cows.

Furthermore, the way New Leaf compared to the other markets and stores that were presented in class was that New Leaf was, in my opinion, very parallel to Trader Joe’s in terms of how they presented themselves vs how they really were. I was surprised to learn that Trader Joe’s would put up the front that everything really was organic and natural to a certain degree, until you scratch the surface and realize that its just another food store that can cater to a town and give off the attitude that this store in particular was organic for town it was in and people would believe that the products in there were from close by. While actually their products were mostly mass produced from across the world.
