...beings. The only reason why some of the members of the tribe are being a danger to the modern people is that they feel threaten. It’s saddening that slowly the tribes are disappearing and that some people just forget about them like they never existed. Well honestly, they are not the only ones that will be gone but the beautiful surroundings that they are also trying to preserve. Like the forest in Brazil, it is the Surui Indian tribe who are protecting this from the illegal loggers. Their lives are being threatened and they have no one protecting them from it except with their beliefs. It’s really a relief that they have Almir Suri who is part of their tribe and is really trying to fight for the tribe’s survival. Even though he had study in a nice university outside their place, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from and is still ready to help them grow more. Also, I think Almir is trying to show the world that he can also put up with the abilities of the modern people, that even though he started from being a member of a tribe whose life is just simple yet civilized, he knows what the overall people...

...Book Review: Nice Guys Can Get the Corner Office What is this book about? In the book Nice Guy Can Get the Corner Office, the author challenged the adage “Nice guys finish last.” He believed that a guy can be nice and successful at business at the same time. The subtitle would tell us better about what’s in this book: "Eight Strategies for Winning in Business without Being a Jerk." The author defines “nice” as a constructive and consciously chosen approach to relationships that is founded on: * Attempting to optimize outcomes for both others and ourselves * Striving to balance assertiveness with cooperation to achieve a spirit of collaboration * Honoring the value and strength of others and ourselves * Seeking optimal outcomes for everyone involved by emphasizing truthfulness and authenticity * Opening confronting challenges and disagreements and embracing the innovation-promoting benefits of constructive idea conflict The author also defines “success in business” as need are fulfilled—individual’s need as well as the needs of others. The authors surveyed more than 350 nice guys and found out that most of them are “too nice”. And these overly nice guys are always struggling between “eager to please others” (being too nice) and “fulfill their own needs (being successful in business).” This book gives eight strategies to help those overly nice guys balance being nice and being a jerk when achieving success. These eight strategies consists of eight rights...

...What Every MBA Student in the World Needs to Know Sandeep Krishnamurthy http://faculty.washington.edu/sandeep 1 Management ≠ analysis. What you are learning in school is analysis. You are being taught tools and techniques. Analysis is just one of the ingredients in the recipe. You may have the best analysis in the room. However, if your analysis is not heard and taken seriously, it is of no value. Too often, talented people with the best answers sit in the back of the room while hacks run the show. If you enjoy the view from the back, getting an MBA will not change anything. A MBA degree only works if you are willing to transform yourself. Are you? 2 Einstein would have been a terrible manager. There is a huge misconception among students that being smart is the way to be successful. Let me break this to you. It is not about being smart. There are many smart people who are absolutely incompetent managers. Not to mention the fact that many smart people are first-rate jerks. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying you have to be dumb to succeed. What I am saying is that you do not have to be a Mensan to make it to the top. All you need is average intelligence. But, you need other qualities. 3 Bill Clinton would have been an excellent manager. The man had his faults. But, he could communicate like few others. Bad managers are, frequently, terrible communicators. They have good ideas. They simply don’t know how to get them across. You cannot lead, motivate or sell if you cannot...

...desirable neighbors. It is a fact that all of us have our own difficulties and nothing is more meaningful than a hand given to us in time of need. For instance, when you are busy organizing a get-together with all members in your family but the fact that you have forgotten to purchase one of the most important ingredients threatens to ruin your main dish. However, you can easily have the neighbors to travel to the market and buy it for you. That’s an accurate picture of a helpful neighbor who you should be grateful to. Furthermore, a kind neighbor from my point of view would have the quality of sympathy. Having someone to care about you and share their feelings with you is necessary when you are experiencing a tough time in life . For example, a nice neighbor to a widow who has just lost her husband in a terrible accident must help her to overcome with grief. There may be cases where there are children whose their parents got dirvoced. In such cases, a good neighbor is required to treat them equally to other kids instead of gossiping anything about them. In addition to helpfulness and sympathy, a neighbor who possess a sense of integrity would be perfect. I can endure the fact that there are some two-faced people who always steal my properties such as water, electricity supply and even illegaly use my wireless internet connection. To sum up, my portrait of an obliging neighbor must be a caring, sympathetic and trustworthy...

...Case study: The Rise of the Nice CEO? 1. Do you think Sutton is wrong and that the contrasting fortunes, and penalties, of Nardelli, McNerney, and Immelt are coincidental? Why or why not? • No, I don’t think Sutton is wrong. Contrasting Nardelli’s, McNerney’s, and Immelt’s fortunes and personalities are not coincidental. Management that uses negative connotation or implementation doesn’t create good and efficient environment for their employees. To acquire good quality result CEOs must able to consider their personality in the workplace. CEOs are the leaders of the company. But it doesn’t mean they can be cruel and too bossy to their rank and file employees. CEOs as the head of the company must be able to relate or communicate to their employees well in order to implement his ideas regarding to the company’s better progress. Also CEOs must have the capability inspire their employees to be more productive and efficient. Basically people will actually obey or follow the commands or orders of the people who are actually nicer or considerate. Like in McNerney and Immelt’s situation who are more approachable and understanding to their employees. They acknowledge their employees opinion to improve the company’s strategies. On the other hand, Nardelli’s, he has this tendency of having a bad temper and notorious management. Employees aren’t willing enough to do a favor or take orders from him. That’s why the productivity of the company tends to decrease. Therefore, employees show...

...19 October 2013 Vacations as Time Goes on Now that I am an adult I see how much work goes into making a vacation an enjoyable experience. When I was a child growing up I did not think about all the work that my parents went through to give me the experiences that I now have to look back upon. I only cared about if I was having an enjoyable experience at the time. When I didn’t get my way I would complain about small insignificant things that should not have mattered. It is funny how the things I thought so little about then, make huge differences now. One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of vacations are hotels. When growing up my family would often stay overnight at hotels for mini vacations. I didn’t have a care in the world. I got to sit back and enjoy everything that was going on around me. My parents would choose a hotel for the family to stay at for the night and that was it, that’s where we would be going. I would complain about having to share a bed with my siblings because I wanted my own bed. I also remember complaining about the long car rides to the hotel. As an adult when I look at going to a hotel I have a few things I have to consider before making my decisions. I have to think about where I am going to stay, how much this hotel will cost, and I also have to worry about leaving on time to make it in time for the check in. Another thing I have to consider is what amenities the hotel has to offer for my family to enjoy. Also I must make...

...of the work for you. The article is aimed at those certain types of bosses who respond to their subordinates by saying things like “Leave me a memo on that. I’ll get back to you. Don’t you worry about that.” With these responses, the article explains that subordinates are handing off their own problems to the backs of their supervisors. This is a vicious never ending cycle for the manager because he then finds himself over working and trying to catch up on the weekends while the subordinates are waiting on the boss’ response while enjoying their own weekend. This is kind of ironic because you find yourself questioning who’s actually working for whom. The article refers to these jobs or tasks as “monkeys”. The author uses the metaphor on how a monkey jumps from one back to another symbolizing the task (or monkey) jumping from the subordinate’s responsibility on to the boss’. One thing I learned from the article is how to manage time in general and never hand my problems to somebody else. I also learned how to avoid dealing with other peoples tasks and making sure I am not providing these types of answers which welcome the monkeys open armed. Three of My Monkeys Three monkeys which I currently have are school, work and bills. The way I deal with school is by making sure I attend everyday and staying on top of the workload. With 7 classes this semester it is easy to fall behind but it is my responsibility and nobody else’s to attend and do all of my homework. At work, it is similar...

... Next, I would have to ask why there is so much of the products that are hardly ever used. I would explain that if it is on an auto-order system she should take it off and try to send some of the excess product back for credit, if that is possible. And the rush orders for frequently used products needs to stop and those items need to be added to an auto-order to prevent from running out in the future. Then, she and I would work on the storage area. We would go back and forth with different ideas to get it into a nice and orderly area so she and her employees can find the items they need in a quick manner when needed. After that we would then discuss the most proficient way to get the decontamination area working properly. I would ask what she thinks the area is lacking and then I would explain to her my theories. Lastly, we would together tackle the processing area. I would begin by telling her that the area is way too big. If she were to downsize it, it would run way more proficient. Together, we would work to make it run in a way that will show her...

...up all the fun activities I had plan with my friends and family, I also had to do extra work to make up for the work I did not complete in class. It was a Friday afternoon, I was in my English class when the classrooms phone began to ring. As I was completing my work, the teacher called my name saying,”Chenelle pack your things you're going home.” When i was walking out the room I started to remember that it was my dad’s birthday. As I approached the front office, my father did not look so happy, then he said, “Look at your report card and tell me what you see. “Before I could get a word out i was grounded just like that. A few days had gone by and my weekend was dead. The night before school I called my friends to set up a meeting at lunch. It was 12:45pm that is the time for lunch. My friends and I were walking to the table that we sit at every day .They knew that something was wrong with me because I did not talk or eat my food. As lunch was about to be over I had spoken like a ghost coming out of nowhere I said,” I have something very important to tell you and if you don’t like it than we can no longer be friends.” All of them gathered around me like a pack of dogs eating food. I said, “The grades that I have now is not acceptable, so in that case I will not be going out to the movies or the mall any time soon, so I’m saying this in a nice way if you cannot support in my decisions than are friendship is over.” From that day on...

...Health Hazards in the IT profession When you tell someone you are in the IT profession they usually come back with something like “oh so you get to sit around all day playing on a computer!” The truth is there are lots of risks with “sitting around playing on a computer”. Being at a desk and in front of a computer can be just as hazardous as being a construction worker or a mover for a moving company. There are health hazards that go along with sitting all day. Blood clots from lack of movement, the lighting of the computer screen which cause headaches and eye strain. With a busy work environment, often time there is no time for a nice long lunch hour which leads to grabbing something quick and usually not the healthiest on the menu. This is just to name a few of the problems with being an IT. It’s hard to believe an industry such as Information Technology can actually be hazardous to your health. Did I mention stress? Although there are a lot of physical issues that come with the IT profession, I would like to focus on the stress of the IT profession. It was not long ago that I worked in an office environment and had no idea what it took to be an “IT person”. I was one of the many that complained about how long it took to get and IT person to look at my computer to see what was wrong with it. Until now, I had no idea. With the tighter budgets caused by the economic strain, there has been a problem with understaffing in the IT field. Unfortunately, understaffing...

...left Europe to start over and the conditions I have arrived to are not as I expected. Although there are many opportunities here, I am still unsure as to whether I should stay here. I miss my home so much but I am eager to try and embrace the American ways. When I first arrived in New York City, I was taken to a medical facility to check my physical condition. I was lucky that I was healthy enough for the journey, as many faced fatal sicknesses and contracted diseases. Some were sent back to where their journey began. I am much thinner than I was before I left home, but I am sure once I am able to find employment, that I will be able to eat more and regain some of my strength. I have found housing with others from Europe. It is so nice to be able to talk with others that speak my language and understand my feelings of leaving home. The living conditions are not as I thought they would be. The buildings were once single family residents but now they are divided among many of us to share. I do not have my own room, but I am making due sharing my space. Although there is not much light in the apartment I live in and there only two windows to bring in fresh air, I will be fine. Unfortunately there is no indoor plumbing; however our place is being renovated with a toilet that we will be able to share. Soon, when some of the dwellings are remodeled I hope that we will have better living conditions, as the home I am in now is overcrowded, but we make do and help each other the...

...Personal Work Priorities and Professional Development | | Short Answer Questions Question 1 - Build downtime into your schedule. When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time with your family and friends, and activities that help you recharge. - Get moving. It's hard to make time for exercise when you have a jam-packed schedule, but it may ultimately help you get more done by boosting your energy level and ability to concentrate. - Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way. Don't assume that you need to make big changes to bring more balance to your life. Brooks recommends setting realistic goals, like leaving the office earlier 1 night per week. Question 2 - Organize & Prioritize Create a daily schedule and follow it. Identify the top three or four critical projects that need to be completed. Ensure your task list is manageable, adds value, and benefits your firm. - Stop Multitasking Guilty as charged! In the past I’ve been a master multitasker, or so I thought. I could answer a phone call, respond to an email, and dabble on a project simultaneously. I was satisfied that I could work on several projects at once. In reality, the quality of my work was compromised. Multitasking lowers IQ, lowers EQ (emotional intelligence), slows you down, increases stress levels, and causes mistakes. Master unitasking instead. - Avoid Distractions Did you know that focus is a fundamental quality of productive people? Our brains are wired to work best...

...‘Orientation’ describes to the reader how organizations begin patterns of cultural assumptions that get passed onto new employees from their first workday. Background Culture in the work place is different for everyone. Culture is, even though culture calls attention to and focus on different things, something that we experience every day. Keeping this in mind, what does Orozco’s story begin to tell about the culture of this organization? Through the orientation of a person entering a new job you learn about ‘the way things are done round here’–these are the unwritten rules, beliefs, myths and language ("Management: Perspective And Practice", 2011). The new person learns about what is acceptable behavior in the office. The newcomer must quickly learn the rules of the game in order to become an accepted member. I have not been in my work position very long. It feels like just yesterday the HR department was handing me the very first documents that would identify just how I need to behave in the company. As soon as HR handed me over to my orientation guide, it was as if the guide had never read the new employee handbook. Rules went out the window. Reading the first few paragraphs of this story quickly took me back to my first days in my new position. It was almost as if I learned more about the work culture than that of the details of my day to day...

...enjoyed my time at One Bistro. I have been going every Wednesday since the first week; I believe that makes a total of three times. I have only been able to go and volunteer on Wednesdays due to my work schedule. I get to One Bistro before they open, usually around ten o’clock. I haven’t had much interaction with the customers but I have had a chance to talk to some of the workers who volunteer for there meals. I have set tables, cleaned dishes, and cut and bagged bread. Normally when I first get there I help set tables. The dishes are normally done, except for on my first visit. After I’m finished with the tables I get the tedious task of cutting and bagging bread. This bread is not a nice soft, cuts like butter bread. It is very hard and crusty, like a brick. The first time I was asked cut the bread, I came away with a huge blister on my finger. As far as Service-Learning goes I enjoy it. It is a great way to get involved and get to know new people. The only problem that I can think of is that I don’t have much contact with the customers that come in. With my schedule I am only able to go Wednesday mornings before they open. I hope to get a weekend off from work and be able to go and experience the atmosphere when there are real customers in the restaurant and not just workers. The work and reading in class relates to One Bistro by being able to take what I am doing and expressing it so that a person who has never been there can still experience and get the feel of the restaurant...
