...HyeongIk Seong Professor Heather Maclean ESL 100 1 July 2013 Similarities and differences between Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Grace Ogot’s The Rain Came <IT>Jaroslav Jan Pelikan once said “Tradition is the living faith of the dead, traditionalism is the dead faith of the living. And, I suppose I should add, it is traditionalism that gives tradition such a bad name.”<> It means that some of traditions which we follow need to be rethought. In simple language, people can’t evaluate their behaviors themselves; thus, they may blindly keep traditions can be harmful to them. There has been a long conflict between the younger and old generation. Older generations want to keep their traditions without changing; furthermore, they believe in inheriting customs like maintaining their ancestor’s spirits. However, the younger generation thinks that if a tradition is harmful to them or need to be prohibited, don’t have to follow it. <TS>Even though Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Grace Ogot’s The Rain Came share noticeable similarities in theme, characters, they have significant differences in setting and atmosphere. TS> The first similarity between Jackson’s The Lottery and Grace Ogot’s The Rain Came is in their themes. <SP>Both these stories have themes of tradition and customs. “The Lottery” tells the story of a tradition practiced by the villagers. No one knows when it started, and no one can guess when it will end. ...

...2) Traditions are rituals or beliefs that connect a culture with its past. Adults feel that it is very important to follow these established customs and cannot even imagine rebelling against them although they may be hurtful in some ways. Shirley Jackson explores this premise in her short story ‘The Lottery’ where the oldest man in the village had been taking part in the ritual of the lottery for the past 77 years and his insistence about the practicing of the tradition for a more productive harvest and find the abolishment of the tradition foolish. Tradition is not easily broken as it had become a habitual practice, it has meaning underneath the practice and afraid of changing the tradition. Tradition is not easily broken as it has been practiced for a long time and it had become part and parcel of life. Most traditions had been practiced for centuries, carried down from generation to generations. These are taken in as a time honored practice and the greatest treasure of a nation. Mr. Summers called his own name and then stepped forward precisely and selected a slip from the box. Then he called, "Warner." "Seventy-seventh year I been in the lottery," Old Man Warner said as he went through the crowd. "Seventy-seventh time." As Old Man Warner had been participating in the ritual of “The Lottery” for the seventy seventh time, it showed that the history of the tradition is so long. Although we, the younger generation might not understand the tradition or the tradition does not make...

...Should gun rights be limited? This is a broad question. I will focus closely to what was written in the attached article “Gun rights and corresponding responsibilities” from the Chicago Tribune by Christine Johanson Ross, of Buffalo Grove. The author breaks right into a non sequitur fallacy, as she is assuming that her thought on gun safety is “commonsense”. She uses many other examples throughout history to prove her point. She uses the similarity of restricted first amendment rights to justify why it is ok to impose additional laws for gun owners. The author states that “20,000 American children and teens die from gun violence yearly”. The author does not state where she got her information from. The non-profit organization, Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) started in 1979, uses information from multiple government agencies. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2008 and 2009, reported a total of 5,740 children and teens aged 0-19, that were killed by guns. The CDF information is verified by the CDC. Center for Disease and Control (CDC), reports annually on the number of deaths in the United States. The numbers below only include deaths caused by firearms. The CDC breaks its statistics down into smaller categories. This particular report is broken down by age and also by type of gun violence. Their numbers include a larger group than the author included, which were children and teens only. By my definition, children and teens would be aged 0-19. ...

...stated that because of “loose lips” citizens could be responsible for “sunken ships,” when in reality, most of the general public were probably never in direct contact with the enemy. The claimed outcome was highly unlikely when considering the first statement. What the propaganda was meant for, was to create hatred for the enemy and build up nationalization. I think for what the phrase was truly meant for, it was a success, however, the phrase itself, if taken literally, was a failure and definitely a fallacy. “Remember the Alamo" is a non sequitur fallacy in today’s society. Originally, the phrase was used as a battle cry during the “massacres by Mexican forces at the Alamo in San Antonio.” (Answers) I believe the original rendition of the slogan was completely relevant to its said situation, but today, people use the phrase as a way to convey strength and honor in essentially any situation. In this case the slogan can be a non sequitur fallacy because the original claim usually has no correlation to what a person may be talking about. People like to use the slogan simply because it can add power to a statement, therefore making it a fallacy and unsuccessful in its purpose. “Guns don’t kill people, people do,” is a slogan from the National Rifle Association. (Lunsford) This statement is recognized as an equivocation fallacy due to the fact that it can be seen as a half-truth. Yes, guns kill people, and yes, people kill people, but is one the result of the other...

...|The Business Environment | | | |Karron Lay | |February 2, 2013 | BUSINESS IN THE ECONOMY To understand how a business affects the economy we must first understand the meaning of what a business is by definition. A business is “an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial or professional activities”. (Investopedia, 2013) A business or firm produces the products or services that consumers need, want, or desire. Most businesses or firms operate for profits, which is “the financial reward that comes from starting and running a business”. (Kelly & McGowen, 2012) When a business is not making a profit they are operating at a loss. This could be due to the amount of funds that a business or firm must cover such as their expenses to produce products or services. If the business or firms expenses are more than the profits, then business or firm is operating at a loss. If a business is running at a loss it could be due to key...

...Private Inurement In order for any healthcare organization or nonprofit hospital to become income tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) they must ensure that no portion of the hospital or organizations net earnings benefits any individual or private shareholder associated with the organization. When an organization qualifies as a 501(c)(3), the IRS presumes it is a private foundation unless the organization can show it is a public charity. This excludes statutory public charities such as schools and churches. A charity organization can lose tax exempt benefits if found to violate the private inurement proscription. Inurement violations can occur when a financial benefit occurs from the allocation of an organization’s financial resources to an individual without regard to exempt status in mind and based solely on the individual’s relationship with the organization. Individuals or private shareholders are known as “insiders” who have a personal interest in the organization’s activities or the individual is in a position to influence the organization (Zarzar, 2001). According to Karl Emerson, excessive compensation is the most common type of private inurement paid to insiders within an organization. There are other forms of private inurement that can cause an organization to lose their tax exempt status or impose intermediate sanctions such as: organizations purchase of an asset from an insider; sale of organization’s asset to an insider; the organization’s rental of property to...

...Description of organization Jewel’s Rescue mission is a Non-profit, Non-denominational Christian organization meeting the needs of less fortunate in the county of Merced through emergency short and long-term rehabilitation services. The program will also serve as a rescue mission for some displaced pets. Jewel’s Rescue Mission was established because of the love and compassion of one woman. As long as I can remember, Jeweline (Jewel) P. Mays opened her home and heart to people and pets of all lifestyles. Her love for Christ kept her humble and prosperous. She rarely missed a day of cooking a hearty meal. Every meal cooked was large enough to feed a small army. There was seldom a day that a stranger was not at our table. Jewel would always save the scraps for animals. All who knew her knew Jewel throughout the community as,”Mom”. In 2006, Jewel was diagnosed with a rare illness. Physicians informed us the illness would end her life within three years. That news never discouraged her, and her faith in God never waivered. Although her wind capacity was getting shorter as they day went on, she continued going to church until she was no longer able to endure the air outdoors. With all of this going on her life, she kept feeding the hungry and helping those who needed help mentally, spiritually, sometimes physically and financially for the better part of those three years. Towards the end of her life, she was still concerned about a few she had not been able to help in the past...

...WHAT SHOULD INDIAN NAVY DO TO INVITE BETTER TALENTED YOUTH? I had rather have a plain, russet-coated Captain, that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, than that which you call a Gentle-man and is nothing else. Oliver Cromwell INTRODUCTION 1. In order for the Indian Navy to meet its ever growing list of commitments, it is imperative that it be staffed by intelligent, disciplined and courageous men and women. The Indian Navy’s charter of duties has increased many fold and grown beyond its traditional role in the last decade. Post 26/11 the importance of Coastal Security has been highlighted. Anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the ever-increasing threat of piracy along India’s own coast have further tasked the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy now interacts and operates with almost all major navies of the world, and is an ambassador of the nation. The Naval personnel have to be smart, eloquent and quick thinking to project the right image of the nation. Technology has always been led by the demands of the armed forces, and the Indian Navy is in the forefront in this aspect. All recent inductions are in the cutting edge of technology. To maximise the effect of technology, and to use them sensibly and responsibly, the Indian Navy needs youth with the correct education, intelligence and mental make up. 2. The Times of India, dated 07 Mar 2011 reported that the armed forces are facing a shortage of 15,004 officers. In written reply to a question...

...The Business Environment Tony Burchfield Dr. Nicole Ortloff BUS100 – Intro to Business In a world of high demand, many businesses have many different roles throughout the world, but ultimately are the drive and fuel for our economy that we live in. Through the course of time we’ve come to realize as a civilization that it was more practical in some cases to produce certain products, and trade for others. At the time this probably not considered to be a business transaction, but that was precisely what was shaping our future for decades to come. For example, not everyone knows how to grow, or has the means to grow, certain crops but they might have a different skill set that they can provide services for in return for crops from a local farmer. If the farmer grew corn and a hunter had fur and meat, then a trade could be made. They barter with each other in order to acquire things that they don’t have specific skills/equipment to produce. This is a practical business transaction on a very basic level. If we were not to adapt this logical way of thinking, we would be able to live, but not very practically and efficiently. We would have to figure out ways to clothe, feed, and shelter ourselves on a daily basis with no shops of any kind to help. To live in this kind of society seems very primitive and irrational. Trade was created to better an economies sense of lifestyle and make goods and opportunities accessible all over the world, thus raising the standard...

...ANALYZE OF MATERIALS DUE TO THEIR FLOW BEHAVIORS ABSTRACT In this article, four different samples’ flow behaviors are analyzed; either they are Newtonian or Non-Newtonian materials. Parallel plate rheometer is preferred to adjust the shear stress and shear rate relationship of the specimens at 25°C and 70°C and test results are evaluated with the plotted flow and viscosity curves. Then, samples are categorized due to their time dependence or shear stress dependence. 1. INTRODUCTION A Newtonian fluid is a fluid whose stress versus rate of strain curve is linear and passes through the origin. The constant of proportionality is known as the viscosity. A simple equation to describe Newtonian fluid behavior is (1) Where; τ is the shear stress exerted by the fluid [Pa] μ is the fluid viscosity - a constant of proportionality [Pa·s] is the velocity gradient perpendicular to the direction of shear [s−1] For a Newtonian fluid, the viscosity depends only on temperature and pressure (and also the chemical composition of the fluid if the fluid is not a pure substance), not on the forces acting upon it. Water is a typical Newtonian fluid. In a Non-Newtonian fluid, the relation between the shear stress and the strain rate is nonlinear. Therefore a constant coefficient of viscosity cannot be defined and they can even be shear –stress dependent or time-dependent. Shear stress dependent materials are divided into two groups. In shear thickening materials...

...(1)Nonprofit organizations deliver critical services, and it is important to devote maximum resources to supporting your cause. That is why it makes sense to ensure your staff and volunteer resources are operating with maximum efficiency. In the nonprofit sector, creating a competitive compensation and benefits strategy is important to attract talent, but developing a total rewards package may be more important. “Employees nowadays are looking at the whole package: ‘What’s my base salary, do I have incentives, what are my benefits, can I telecommute, can I have flex time, can I have a relaxed dress code and is it family-friendly?’” Glantz said. “[If] a not-for-profit can offer what’s considered an attractive total rewards package, [it’s] going to help that company.” The argument now is that these intangibles need to be measured and monitored, and subsequently tied to the bottom line. Re-defining the bottom to include intangibles such as leadership practices, organizational capabilities, and the ability to attract talented people is necessary. In addition, as organizations continue to automate business processes using technology, in order to remain competitive against others that are doing the same, they must now focus on their talent. Additionally, though talent can be cultivated and developed, it can also leave the organization, become sick, de-motivated, and perhaps influence others to behave in ways unfavorable for the organization. Worst of all, talent can deliver the “double-whammy”...
