A large part of an individual’s day-to-day life is both eating and performing physical activity. The Choose My Plate/ Super Tracker website provided by the U.S. government provides a way to plan, track, and compare meals based on the nutrients needed by the individual. The website also provides an eating plan based on your height, weight, level of physical activity, and diet goals. Additionally, the website produces a nutrient report detailing the individuals average intake of a variety of nutrients, and compares and contrasts it to the target amount. Consuming proper nutrition is extremely important in living a healthy lifestyle. Paying clear attention and keeping an eye on your personal daily nutrition values and intake is vital to maintaining an adequate diet. The purpose of this paper is to analyze my personal dietary intake as a way of better understanding the ways in which the foods I consume are helping or hurting my overall nutrition and health. My personal daily intake will be analyzed to determine what foods are providing the right type of nutrients, and how food consumption might be adjusted to provide for a healthier nutrient intake.
For this analysis, I created a plan using Super Tracker that was based on my current weight and activity level, and my goal to lose weight. My physical activity was tracked for the week of March 13- March 19, and my meals were tracked for the day of March 15, 2016. Prior to this project, I had recently changed my lifestyle. My eating habits have been very poor in the past, and my activity level was sedentary. In order to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, the recommendations I received from the Super Tracker included a diet of no more than 1800 calories a

Utilization of Biodegradable Kitchen Wastes Into Organic Fertilzer Using Earthworms (Lumbricus Terrestris

...terrestris were gathered. The resultant product, called "earthworm castings," were then sun-dried and passed through a fine sieve to remove foreign materials. Results showed that the casting from kitchen wastes and manure was highest in percentage total nitrogen, third highest in percentage total P205, and highest in percentage total K20. It was concluded that organic kitchen wastes can be converted into a competitive organic fertilizer using Lumbricus terrestris. The organic fertilizer produced by using earthworms can compete in terms of nutrient contents with other organic fertilizers. INTRODUCTION A good alternative in solving our garbage problem is vermicomposting, the process in which organic wastes are decomposed naturally with the use of earthworms. This research focuses on the efficient decomposition of organic kitchen wastes using Lumbricus terrestris and converting these wastes into organic fertilizer that can compete in terms of nutrient content with other organic fertilizers....

...Introduction Vitamins are among the most important nutrients for the human body. Many people are taking regular doses of supplements enriched with various Vitamins in purposes of growing stronger, improving the immune system, and keeping the body healthy. Essential nutrients are critical for plants to grow healthily. However, whether additional Vitamins have an impact on plant growth is not well understood yet. A popular example of nutrients would be minerals. Plants can produce the Vitamin themselves. They also have the ability to gather and convert Vitamins from sunlight. There is this debate on whether additional Vitamins are considered essential for plant growth. It is necessary to investigate if Vitamins could also benefit the growth of plants when they are with Vitamin packed solutions. In this study, three major Vitamin groups that humans constantly intake within doses, named Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E, will be tested....

Linkages of Plant Traits to Soil Properties

...plant traits to soil properties and the functioning of temperate grassland The researchers and authors of this paper looked at the idea of plant-soil interactions and how their traits can be a tool to help understand ecosystem functions. Global climate change has affected many factors involved in ecosystems and their functions, and this will continue to happen. A very likely outcome of continued climate change is the changing of plant communities and their traits. This in turn affects the surrounding soil, and that will have an impact on the nutrient cycling which rely very heavily on the soil to be the mediator. Most of Earth’s processes and functions are interconnected and are difficult to alter without having an effect on something else. The relationship of plant traits to ecosystem properties can tell researchers a great deal about the current state of the ecosystem and the kind of functions that are present. Key nutrient cycles such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon are intricate and affected by many factors. The researchers of this paper believed that by studying the plant traits and soil properties they could gain a better idea of these cycles and the way that they are affected. Their main goal was to determine whether or not the traits of co-existing grassland species grown with different growth strategies would have an effect/differ the soil properties. They measured the plant traits on fresh leaf, litter, and root material from each plot. Total C, N, and...

Hydroponics

...roponics [pic] Life sciences Year 2 IP 2012 Term 3 coursework Done by: Rananjay Singh Rathore(18) class: 2.12 [pic] [pic] The General Idea For the hydroponics project I attempted to grow the plant known as Kangkong. I acquired the seeds from a shop in Bishan known as the Oh Chin Huat Hydroponics Farm. Reason for choice of plant I chose this plant as I was under the impression that they were easy to maintain and were fast-growing. This proved to be slightly incorrect. Amount of nutrient solution used I used about 8 milliliters of nutrient solution, diluted in 900 milliliters of water. The ratio of nutrient solution to the water is as such because I wanted to give my plant(s) the extra “edge”. Basically, I assumed it would help boost my plant’s growth. It did not seem to do much however, in comparison to other specimens. Difficulties encountered Throughout this learning experience, I came across a string of ups and downs. Unfortunately, I mainly faced a lot of setbacks. I had trouble keeping some of the plants I grew alive. They would always start to wither. This greatly depleted my resources and required me to re-visit the respective hydroponic farm. So, my log of the plant’s growth is inaccurate due to human error caused by confusion. This problem is very minor, but nevertheless an obstacle. Due to the fact that I did not have a balcony at disposal, I had to place my plants on the dishwasher next to a window....

...becomes rich in dissolved nutrients from fertilizers or sewage, thereby encouraging the growth and decomposition of oxygen-depleting plant life and resulting in harm to other organisms (Encarta dictionary 2007). This is one of the ecological problems that are affecting PAU thought others don’t see it as a problem. Thus, the essay will discuss further on how it is started and evidences of its existence, how to minimize or prevent it from eventuating, and how it affects the environment in which we live in and give a real case study of its effects. Eutrophication began to develop on the lakes of PAU when the campus department stopped cleaning the lakes in order to let the birds to lay their eggs on the flowers growing in the lakes. This is evident in lake two. This has led to eutrophication due to the overcrowding of plant life in the lakes. Some proof that the lakes are becoming entropic are that they smell, overgrowth of plants means the level of oxygen is depleted and less penetration of sunlight, algae are starting to cover the surface of the lakes. Therefore, this shows that lakes here at PAU are starting to become eutropic. Prevention is better than cure therefore it is better to prevent the lakes from becoming eutropic than to cure it after it has become eutropic. As stated in the article, ‘How to cure Eutrophication’ (2012, May 17) that a pond that has become eutropic is hard to rehabilitate. This is because not only will you have to fight the nutrients that are currently running...

We need six major nutrients, which can be organized into three categories. The first category, macronutrients, includes those three that we need in large supply (grams daily). The micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts (micrograms to milligrams). Finally, there is water, which does much more than keep us hydrated., Child Development. Child development is the continuous process of growth of a child from birth until adulthood. The positive experiences children have in their early years are critical for progress in all domains of development, including cognition, emotion, language, motor skills, and social abilities. A child’s development can be measured by observing when the child reaches milestones in each of these areas. For instance, in the motor skills area, a young child often begins to walk at approximately 12–14 months, but it is not unusual for a child to begin as early as 9 months or as late as 18 months. Intellectual Development 0-2 years of age Children at this age learn by exploring with their hands and mouth....

Molar Mass Of Fertilizer Essay

... Experimental Overview: In this experiment I was determining the amount of diphosphorus pentoxide in a sample of fertilizer, then comparing my results to what the fertilizer label states. By doing this experiment I was looking at quality control, and determining if the fertilizer has accurately distributed chemicals needed for healthy plant growth. There are three main Chemicals needed for strong, healthy plants; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen is important for the plant’s growth, and for the growth of the plant’s leaves, while potassium and phosphorus help the roots grow stronger, and healthier, along with helping the plant produce flowers. When looking at the box of fertilizer you will find a set of numbers, such as, 15-30-15, or 10-20-10. These numbers represent the percentage of that particular chemical in the fertilizer. So in the case of 15-30-15, Nitrogen would take up 15% of the total amount of the fertilizer, phosphorus would take up 30%, and then potassium would take up another 15% of the total amount of fertilizer. Which is equal to having 30.0 grams of diphosphorus pentaoxide for every 100 grams of fertilizer. Since I was specifically looking at phosphorus content in this experiment, it was important for me to know the molar mass of P2O5 . To find the molar mass of P2O5 I obtained the molar mass of phosphorus and multiplied it by two, then added that to the molar mass of oxygen multiplied by five, this gave me 141.94 g/mol. ...used to synthesize new molecules, and, in plants, water is essential for photosynthesis. Organisms have evolved various mechanisms for accumulating sufficient quantities of water, ions, and other nutrients and for keeping them properly balanced to maintain homeostasis. Plants absorb and transport water, nutrients, and ions from the surrounding soil via osmosis, diffusion, and active transport. Once water and dissolved nutrients have entered the root xylem, they are transported upward to the stems and leaves as part of the process of transpiration, with a subsequent loss of water due to evaporation from the leaf surface. Too much water loss can be detrimental to plants; they can wilt and die. The transport of water upward from roots to shoots in the xylem is governed by differences in water (or osmotic) potential, with water molecules moving from an area of high potential (higher free energy , more water)to an area of low water potential (lower free energy, less water). The movement of the water through a plant is facilitated by osmosis, root pressure, and the physical and chemical properties of water. Transpiration creates a lower osmotic potential in the leaf, and TACT (transpiration, adhesion, cohesion, and tension) mechanism describes the force that move water and dissolved nutrients up the xylem. Acetogenic Spirochetes As A Major Source Of Energy

...3. Termites A. Spirochetes play a fundamental role when it comes to the nutrition of termites. They use acetate produced by microbes as a major source of energy and of Carbon. Spirochetes N2 fixation also plays an important role in the nitrogen economy of termites. The N2 fixation of these spirochetes is significant for a lot of different environments B. Acetogenic spirochete: -Spirochetes that have been previously cultured, posses the ability to conserve their energy by the oxidation of H2 -The reduction assay of acetylene assays for the cells’ nitrogenase activity Termite: -Oxidation of the Acetate produced by the hindgut microbes is one of the most important sources of energy and Carbon for termites. It supports 100% of the insects’ respiration requirements C. The capability of spirochetes to use Hydrogen as a reductant for acetogenesis helps by reconciling the mysterious domination of acetogenesis over methanogenesis as a Hydrogen sink in a lot of termites. The zone in which the most H is consumed is attributed to spirochetes, which progress amid protozoa in the anoxic central region. Also termites are known to produce more carbon dioxide than all the fossil fuels burned all around the world multiplied by 10. Termites that have a large acetogenic population are less of a concern because hindgut microbes use both hydrogen and carbon dioxide to produce the Acetate that they need as an energy source and for their respiration processes 7.
