According to the teacher the students ELL standardized testing is divided into two sections: written and listening. In order to the complete the listening section the teacher took students two at a time. He stated this method is effective because with only one other student in the room they are each able to focus better. He also stated he did his best to pair up students with similar cultural backgrounds. The two students I observed were of Asian descent. I noticed this helped in creating a comfort level for the students. If one student asked for help the other student paid attention and seemed to gain clarity as well. I’m not sure if this was a cultural connection or simply a peer connection; but it was interesting to see one student nodding

...Abolishing Standardized Tests Standardized tests should be abolished from schools. Standardized tests, like SOLs, are hurting students more so than they are helping them. These tests put a lot of stress on teachers and students. Test scores are used to show school improvement and how well the school is academically. Schools try to raise their test scores to make the school look better. In order to raise the scores teachers are being forced to teach to test. Teachers are only teaching students what they need to know to pass the test. These tests are forcing a curriculum and that is unfair for both teachers and students.
