...In “One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich”, a novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the ill-fated protagonist Shukov, a prisoner of a Stalinist Labor camp, is forced to withstand the nearly insufferable living conditions. By using overpowering external forces – stripping prisoners of their identities by allocating them numbers instead of names, the removal of individuality, through the character of Fetyukov who has lost his dignity, symbolism – spoon and blade, the Solzhenitsyn depicts how the protagonist, Shukov, has succeeded in maintaining his dignity. Shukov’s struggle to maintain his dignity throughout the imprisonment despite the overpowering external forces is remarkable. Solzhenitsyn portrays this dignity in two different ways, one is being treated with respect, and the other one is his own self-worth. The labor camp degrades the prisoners’ piously by substituting their names into letter and number combinations such as “Schcha-854” and grouping them into one mass such as “Gang 104”. This clearly shows that in the camp prisoners have had their identities are taken away. By eliminating their individuality of name, their individual characteristics are ultimately eradicated. The prisoners are reduced to insignificance by mere digits to represent who they are. This taking of their dignity is further exacerbated as Shukov and the prisoners are treated with such disrespect that they seem as insignificant as objects, as they are given a total lack of privacy. Although other prisoners...

Amazon says their EC2 has 99.95% availability for each Amazon EC2 Region. ...Day One – Orientation Day one of training a new employee is a very important piece of orienting and training. In the firs day the employee is exposed to the new people and materials. Orientation is not just something that happens on the first day, but it is something that is included throughout the training process. In the beginning of the hiring process we can begin the orientation by explaining the job description to the potential employee as well as any company history, and any pay information. This is also known as an offer meeting. At this point it is a great time to ask the new employee if they have any questions or concerns. It is important to let them ask all questions they need to. This will make them feel more comfortable and open towards new concepts and ideas. Once they are hired we can begin on explaining all of the rules, polices, and procedures. It is very important to be clear and concise on the rules. Being clear about all the information can help to keep the new employees attitude be positive in the future of the company. All policies are also explained. The orientation can also get deeper into detail on any benefits such as setting up a 401 k, and how to request time off, or sick days. ...History and Development of Prisons The historical account of jails in our country can be traced back to the Epic age. In Ramayana, when Bharata saw Rama at Chitrakut, the latter, while making detailed inquiry about the state of polity and welfare of people of Ayodhya, did not forget to elicit the situation in jail there. References of jail are also there in the Mahabharata. In those mythological period there were eighteen important state officials and one of them was the bead of the institution of jail (karagriha) designated as kamyadhyrrkrkcr". In Manusmriti it is stated that "(the King) should have all the prisons built on the royal highway, where the suffering and mutilated evil doers can be seen". Development of the prison system Until the late 18th century, prisons were used mainly for the confinement of debtors who could not meet their obligations, of accused persons waiting to be tried, and of convicts who were waiting for their sentences--either death or banishment--to be put into effect. But imprisonment gradually came to be accepted not only as a device for holding these persons but also as a means of punishing convicted criminals. During the 16th century a number of houses of correction were established in England and on the continent for the reform of minor offenders. The main emphasis was on strict discipline and hard labour. The unsanitary conditions and lack of provisions for the welfare of the inmates in these houses of correction soon produced widespread...

...Freewrite # 1: One Aspect of a Typical Day I remember the first day home with first my newborn. However, apart from the overwhelming excitement part of having my baby home, the rest did not happen as I expected or at least planned ahead. I always try to be organized and well-prepared; things should be exact. But now the baby comes first. I can’t imagine leaving him just for a minute to do other errands. My mom always told me “Your life will change when your baby arrives”. I did not really believe her at the time, but now I guess she was right. In my eyes, my baby is the most wonderful and precious thing in the world I have ever received. Not even the first birthday present, which was a bike I had long wished for, I got from my parents on my 6-years-old birthday can be compared. The very first moment I saw him in the delivery room when the mid-wife handed him to me, I could feel how much love coming from him holding him in my arms, and also how much love coming from my heart in return. However, dealing with his routine on a daily basis needs a lot of patience. I have to admit that, there are times where my patience is tested. There are times when I feel completely frazzled and annoyed. There are times I take my son for granted with the “work” and “worry”, and how much my tired body screams at me for a break. But I know I will never wish for anything else. I might know well that all a baby does is eat, poop, cry, and sleep. This sounds simple at first, but, turns out a challenging...

...Right now we live in the digital age. Almost any business needs a website to be able to produce better profits. With this semester taking e-commerce was a smart choice and has made me set two goals for myself. The first goal is to be able to have good security when dealing with people online. If the system is hacked in any way the clients will want to know that their information is protected. That said e-commerce security is my first goal to accomplish by the end of the semester. The other goal that is set for this course is the understanding of the ethical, social, and political issues on the web today. To offend someone with an idea or product is very easy in this politically correct world. For me to understand how to have a successful business without offending anyone would be spectacular. This course would be beneficial for all people who would like to work with this century’s technology. How to build a website for a business and keep it going is essential for most professions. To know how to build a professional profile across the Internet with security is going to increase business with a better chance of profits. For example, Amazon is the first online-only store that started the whole ordering an item(s) and has them shipped to a person’s front door. Years later this company is a house hold name that is worth billions. That is what this course can teach me, to show how to start brand from scratch and build it. I am excited about being able to learn how to be able...

...How Children Fail is a non-fiction book by John Holt, published in 1964 and republished in 1982 in a revised edition. It has sold over a million copies.[1] In this book he cites personal teaching and research experiences that led him to the belief that traditional schooling does more harm than good to a child's ability and desire to truly learn. ------------------------------------------------- [edit]Synopsis In How Children Fail John Holt states his belief that children love to learn, but hate to be taught. His experiences in the classroom as ateacher and researcher brought him to the conclusion that all children are intelligent. They become unintelligent because they are accustomed by teachers and schools to strive only for teacher approval and for the “right” answers, and to forget all else. In this system, children see no value in thinking and discovery, but see it only in playing the game of school. Children believe that they must please the teacher, the adults, at all costs. They learn how to manipulate teachers to gain clues about what the teacher really wants. Through the teacher’s body language, facial expressions and other clues, they learn what might be the right answer. They mumble, straddle the answer, get the teacher to answer their own question, and take wild guesses while waiting to see what happens- all in order to increase the chances for a right answer. When children are very young, they have natural curiosity about the world, trying diligently to figure...

...Decatur Library, I called a friend from back home to have a distracting, loud conversation about sports. I figured that the idea of me talking about something unofficial instead of school matters would cause more of a response from bystanders. I got very lucky because although the library is never too busy, there was a good amount of people there this specific day. As I walked in, laughing about my experience in shooting free-throws, heads started turning in my direction. Not giving any effort to lower my voice, I observed one person give me a dirty look and whisper to her friend who she was sitting with. Right away the friend looked at me and just shook her head as if she was disgusted with me. I noticed that they were sitting in far corner so I slowly walked towards the water fountain continuing my conversation. As I got close to their table, I could tell they were getting irritated. However I wanted to see if they would simply ask me to be quite or if they were going to make comments about my phone usage under their breath. I honestly didn't think they were going to say anything to me, and sure enough they didn't. However, one of the girls mumbled under her breath, "I guess he doesn't understand this is a library." At this point, I figured I had observed enough, and ended my phone conversation. I then apologized for being a distraction, and made my way...

...I agree, with all these high cost it’s a loose, loose situation. The hospital bill is not being paid by customers because they cannot afford to pay the high cost of medical. The hospital then loses money finding it very difficult to offer quality care and to keep their doors open. Customers will lose quality care and have to pay higher cost and insurance premiums keeps getting higher each year. Medications are very expensive and your health insurance can force you to get fill your medications from different pharmacies. For example I was filling my prescription at Stop and Shop and one day the pharmacy told me that they no longer accept my insurance and I would have to go to CVS to fill all my prescription from now on. These insurance companies control everything whether you pay or not. What is a demand curve in health care? Provide an example of a demand curve in health care. How could this example affect the economics of health care? This predictable relationship between price and quantity demanded allows us to define demand formally as the quantity of a good or service that buyers are willing and able to buy at every conceivable price. The demand curve shows this relationship graphically. A graphical representation of this economic relationship produces the classic downward sloping demand curve and the upward sloping supply curve. At some point in time however, the treatment plan is completed, the patient is satisfied, and additional services are not needed. This is known...
