Language Development Chapter 5 of Santrock outlines the two different types of language development; biology and behavior. First, in looking at the behavioral theory, it says that the brain was predisposed to obtain and learn a language. Basically, we were born with the ability to speak, but our brains have to fully develop before we start speaking and comprehending. There are particular regions of the brain that allow for language development. In doing some more research outside of the text, I found that there are two main areas of the brain called the broca and the wernicke’s area. The broca’s portion of the brain is responsible for speech production, and the wernicke’s area develops the speech comprehension. Both areas are vital to development, but take some time to develop where they can be used. The behavioral approach says that language is a complex skill that is continually reinforced. In doing outside research, I found that a mother and father’s speech can have a direct effect on their child. For example, parents will use a higher pitched voice to grab their child’s attention. There is also a lot of restating and rephrasing going on to help in the child’s language development. Between the two perspectives, I think they both have some solid arguments, but I think I would lean more towards the behavioral approach. In what I’ve seen and read, kids will mimic the behaviors that they witness from others. I can see us being born with some form of way to be able to communicate, but I think a lot of our language development has to do with our environment around us and what we see and interact with.
