Overachiever Research Paper

Being an overachiever can sometimes be a good and bad situation. I always loved mathematics. Learning equations and plugging numbers into complex equations to get a correct answer, what an easy subject right? That all changed when I reached AP Calculus AB. This math class prepared me for a college exam and also to receive a taste of college math. Do I need this class? Of course not. My major has nothing whatsoever to do with any form of math, but being that overachiever I am, I insisted on taking this class. What did I do that for?
I had always made A's and B's in my former mathematic classes. Calculus, however, not so much. I believe I was used to being babied in math until I actually received the concept of the lesson being taught. But, this teacher is not up for the task. She is focuses on making sure we pass the exam and not the class, in my opinion. Also, lack of remembering how math operates is always a problem for me when returning to school from summer break. Being so active during the summer time, planning for my future can be a …show more content…
Do not try to just memorize an equation, learn it, and that is what I have been doing. It is very important to me, to make sure I accomplish what is necessary to pass this class. I doubled up on math my sophomore year to be able to take this class. I did not make it all this way to meet the needs of taking this AP class to give up. I had to make sure I put a major effort in what I decided to do. You see, if you decide to give up that shows weakness, and it shows that you are not willing to face the challenges that are placed in front of you. Finding the strength to go on and portray what has been placed in front of you is more than enough to get you through. My greatest improvement came from within. Without pushing myself to accomplish what some said I should give up on, I would have done just that. I also have peers, teachers, and God to thank for

...is a research paper on an individual that had a great impact on Black History.” As soon as I heard the announcement, my heart beat increased and my palms began to sweat. Literally, I dropped my face on my desk and whispered, “God help us all; I’m about to fail this class.” I had a gut feeling that the assignment was going to be difficult and time consuming. Immediately I imagined the many hours that I would have to assert on the assignment, and the thought depressed me. Little did I know that doing the assignment would bring me one of the greatest surprises of my academic life and taught me that the writing process can’t be rushed. Mrs. Fisher paced back and forth in front of the class room as she explained how someone inspired her to become a teacher. At some point I stopped listing and was on the verge of dozing off. Suddenlty my attention snapped back to her as her words “I get to assign you the person to do this essay on” pushed themselves into my consciousness. Up this point I had thought that we can pick our own person and had settle on Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Fisher proceed to assing different historical figures to different students while the fear of not getting MLK creeped over me. Finally, Mrs. Fisher said,”Santiago Torres, MLK.” For the first time in that class, I felt hopeful. 3 days later we had the rough draft due about our person. Well I didn’t do as you can imagine. Walked into class with this guilt feeling that we all get after we don’t do a paper on time...

Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made or Born?

...Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made Or Born? Heather Brown Social Psychology Dr. Alyson Kohl National University Abstract Many studies have taken place to decide whether people are naturally born to lead or whether those traits are developed and taught over time. Different traits combine to make good leaders, such as ambition, intelligence, and self-confidence. In this paper I will discuss whether these traits are naturally within someone or can they be taught over time. Leadership: Are Good Leaders Made Or Born? How is a good leader defined? Are they charismatic, smart, an over achiever? A Leader, is defined as a person who is “appointed, elected, or informally chosen to direct and co-ordinate the work of others in a group”. A leader and leader-ship are two very different things. To lead you need to be able to influence groups of people socially [ (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2014) ]. Without influence, it would be hard to have people want to follow you. Leaders influence people to work together to accomplish a variety of goals. Leaders can be found in all aspects of life, at work and at play. Psychologists have conducted studies to identify what traits are common to “natural-born leaders”. Some of the common traits that great leaders have been defined in the Great Person Theory of history ( [ (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2014) ]. Ambition, intelligence, and self-confidence are just a few of traits that great leaders throughout time have had in common. The...

...edition [pic] ELITE management consultancies shun the spotlight. They hardly advertise: everyone who might hire them already knows their names. The Manhattan office that houses McKinsey & Company does not trumpet the fact in its lobby. At Bain & Company’s recent partner meeting at a Maryland hotel, signs and name-tags carried a discreet logo, but no mention of Bain. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which announced growing revenues in a quiet press release in April, counts as the braggart of the bunch. [pic] Consultants have a lot to smile about (see table). The leading three strategy consultancies have seen years of double-digit growth despite global economic gloom. In 2011, the last year for which Kennedy Information, a consulting-research group, has comparable revenue numbers, Bain grew by 17.3%, BCG by 14.5% and McKinsey by 12.4%. All three are opening new offices. Big trends that befuddle clients mean big money for clever consultants. Barack Obama’s gazillion-page health reform has boosted health-care consulting; firms would rather pay up than read the blasted thing. The Dodd-Frank financial reform has done the same for financial-sector work. Energy and technology are hot, too. Companies are reluctant to talk about their use of consultants, and consultancies are relentlessly tight-lipped. Bain is said to use code-names for clients even in internal discussions. Such secrecy makes this a hard industry to analyse. It also lets stereotypes flourish. McKinseyites are said...

Am I Fat

...Voss 1 Long slender legs, tiny waists, chiseled face with high cheekbones, and the unrealistic urge to be “perfect” are struggles that some people struggle with in the world today. Everyday people are reminded, sometimes plagued, with the “ideal” look of a woman, or man. Adolescents whom are idolizing models in magazines, movies, and televisions that give them the false realization that every person, should look like they look, or should fit in clothing like they do. Seeing these unrealistic, usually photo shopped, beauties give an average person, or even overweight person, a notion that in some way they are less than beautiful or glamorous than they are. While most people can shrug off these kinds of stereotypes or feelings of looking like these models, others are haunted by the thought and are constantly obsessed with looking like and compromising their own view for society’s view of being “perfect”. This way of thinking not only affects how they feel about their looks, but also affects their outlook on the every aspect of their lives; whether it is academics, sports, or comparing to others in their family. High energy and fast paced lifestyles have made family interaction a minimal experience and leading kids towards the road of self destruction. Rumney (2009) states that, Anorexia Nervosa, is psychological disorder in which an individual deliberately and willfully starves themselves, engaging in “relentless pursuit of thinness” that can be fatal (p. 16). Stack Ranking: Brilliant Management or Inherent Absurdity

...Stack Ranking: Brilliant Management or Inherent Absurdity Ray Johnson MGMT E-4000 Organizational Behavior 1 August 2012 Abstract Employee stack ranking is a performance measurement system that requires every manager to rank its employees from excellent to poor. Stack ranking was popularized by Jack Welch at General Electric in the 1980’s. Since that time it has become a popular management technique. The use of stack ranking has many demonstrated successes, but many managers and business analysts are beginning to questions its value to an organization. In this paper I will examine from a critical perspective both the good and bad aspects of stack ranking in an attempt to determine its long term viability as an organization behavior. Stack Ranking: Brilliant Management or Inherent Absurdity Introduction Stack ranking, sometimes referred to as forced distribution, is a popular performance measurement (appraisal) tool. The concept behind stack ranking is to rank all employees within a given statistical set, all first line supervisors for example, from best to worst. In its most common iterations managers rank, or stack, workers into one of the three groups. The highest performing 20% (sometimes 10%) are ranked as top performers. This top tier group of employees is considered to be the future leaders of the company. They are rewarded with bonuses, raises, promotions stock options and other perks. The middle 70% of the group are considered to be “solid”...
