In the glare of the lights I stood shivering, gripping the worn wooden podium with shaking hands. I had been onstage countless times before, and the lights had always made me sweat. On that night in late September, however, the lights chilled me. Two months and a day after his death, I stood on the stage where he had played countless times, to tell over three hundred people, his parents included, why I loved him. That evening was a celebration of the life of my boyfriend, Parker. He had died in a swimming accident that summer, trying to save the life of a friend. A deep breath in, a deep breath out, and I began to speak, seeing his mother’s tearstained face in the patches of my vision unclouded by the lights. I concentrated my thoughts and words on the qualities he had in abundance: his energy, his generosity, his good humor, his talent, and his passion for life. I felt a desperate need to express myself to all the people gathered to remember him, to remind them of him. But I left out so much. The words I spoke were light, reminding everyone of his humor, making them laugh quietly through their tears. I didn’t speak of the two days in which I had waited, with bated breath and breaking heart, to know whether he lived or died. A chance meeting with a member of his church had informed me of only the slightest details of the accident. Being half a world away, with his family in the process of moving, I was left scrambling to contact anyone who could tell me what happened. I needed to hear something, anything, to dispel the nameless fears running through my mind. How was I to describe those hours of waiting to that audience? Of sitting in a darkened room with his best friend, alternately sobbing and seeking to comfort? Those words, had I found them, would not have been suitable for my speech, and so they were not spoken. The criteria given to me for my speech by the principal of the school, of what to say, how to say it, and who would be listening, pushed me beyond my personal grief, to a place where I had to remember his joy and not my pain. Although those moments were integral to my memory of his death, it would have diminished what I had gone through to speak of it to all those people. I had spoken to his father after the accident, and he managed to tell me that Parker was in a coma, before collapsing into tears. I knew that he would die. A friend called me the next day, telling me the news of his death. It was then that I realized the difference between knowing something would happen and the actual reality of it, of the moment at which it happens. The preparation never covers the pain. When I heard that tearstained voice over the phone, telling me, my mind flew away and the only word I could find was no. No. I didn’t want to stand there at his memorial and bare my soul to the audience. They wouldn’t have understood the incoherence of my thoughts, the inadequacy of my words, or the moments I had to steel myself for in the hours, days and months after his death. How I had to try to find the words to tell his friends. Four calls, at inconvenient times to distant places, to people he and I both loved, to give them news they had never thought to hear. With my back to the cold, white tile of my bathroom wall, I dialed and re-dialled the phone of my best friend into the early hours of the morning, until she got off her plane in California and picked up the phone. She was the final person I had to tell, the last of his best friends, scattered across the globe, isolated in their grief. This was the hardest. Cushion the blow? What medium is sufficient to hide the heart from such pain? Words were all I had, and they were not nearly enough. There were calls I received, people who wanted to comfort me, people I wanted to speak to. But the words didn’t come. Everyone was separated from me through a barrier of words. They could find them, and I couldn’t. Then there was the flight to Utah, a place I had never thought to see. It was a long way from Paris, from Maryland, from any place I had ever called home. But this wide, mountainous land was where he was born, and no matter the peregrinations of his family, this was where he was to be laid to rest. Of the memories of that weekend, dimmed somewhat by jetlag and grief, the words of his mother at the funeral push the other images to the back of my mind. Getting lost driving from Salt Lake City to Provo during the small hours of the morning in a soothing thunderstorm, the white of his clothing against the tan of his skin in the casket, everything fades in the face of his mother’s speech. In all the books I have read, the movies I have seen, plays I have been in and conversations I’ve had, never have I heard such words. Her pain, so immense and unreachable, so private, was transmitted to us through her words. She spoke to him, to his coffin, in a small church in Provo, and every word she said was ripped out of her soul. In that half hour, I rediscovered my love of words. She had found the words, to express her grief and her love. She spoke religiously, of the faith that sustained her, and although I do not share their faith, every word resounded in my heart. She spoke with dignity, as only a mother can, of the infinite love, which, despite its awesome and extremely personal nature, she wished everyone around her to experience. Most of the people sitting in the auditorium at the celebration in September were able to speak, to console, to write. The people who spoke onstage with me were the people who have a grief that is formless, nameless and enduring. We were the ones who spoke, who stood before the community and tried to tell him of our love. In the strength of his mother, father and closest friends, I was reminded of my own strength. Together, with our words, we praised him, laughed and cried for him. As I walked out of the auditorium, with my shoulders squared and my tears drying, I was finally aware of my own power with words, and the healing, strength and love they can hold. The months and weeks before my speech had stripped me of my faith in words, a faith that has followed me my whole life, but in the half hour I had heard Parker’s mother speak, and in the time I spent preparing and giving my own speech, I finally reclaimed that faith. In seeing me through one of the hardest times in my short life, words have become even more dear to me.

...MGT 406 Case Study Papa John International 2007 Identification of competencies The 4 different competences of Papa John’s International include its focus on providing high quality products, operating system, marketing and franchise system. Providing High Quality Products Firstly, Papa Johns’ focus on providing pizzas of superior quality to its customers has laid down the foundation for its success in the long run. Unlike its competitors who focused on cost reduction, Papa Johns focused on differentiating its pizzas. In fact, they were also able to prove in court that they used fresh and better ingredients in comparison to its competitors. This allowed Papa Johns to be rated number one in terms of customer satisfaction among all pizza chains in USA. Applying the VRIO framework, it can be said that this focus provided value to the company owing to its many benefits. Although a restaurant chain selling pizzas was not rare, selling pizzas of such high quality was not common. At the same time, this is not easily imitable by companies because focusing on higher quality will need a major shift from their current procedures and marketing strategies. Furthermore, Papa Johns has been extremely organized in exploiting this competence to its benefit. Hence, as this competence fulfills all the criteria of the VRIO framework, it is both a core and a distinctive competence. Operating System Papa Johns’ efficient operating system is also considered to be one of the competences as...

Analysis of Papa John’s

...Analysis of Papa John’s I. Brief Introduction/Exec Summary The competitors in the pizza industry seem to have balance and be in cooperation with each other. While there are only a few main competitors, they do not seem to be in a price war. They also have a few weaknesses, such as fewer locations than competitors and low switching costs for customers. The purpose of this report is to assess Papa John’s in terms of its overall performance, mission, strategy, and capabilities. Strategy is analyzed from four components, which are goals, products market focus, value proposition, and core activities. History of Papa Johns

...February 24, 2014 30 Years of Papa’s Pizza It all started 30 years ago, when John “Papa” Schnatter crafted the idea to knock out a broom closet inside of his father’s tavern located in Jeffersonville, Indiana (Papa Johns International 1). After receiving a business degree from Ball State University and turning his father’s failing tavern around with an idea of pizza, Mr. Schnatter would wind up selling his beloved ’71 Camero for a $1600.00 investment towards pizza equipment. (Papa Johns International 1) It was that entrepreneurial move which would eventually solidify an excellent business model to launch what is now known as “Papa John’s” and currently the third largest pizza franchise. Taking a look at how Mr. Schnatter rose his company to that achievement; you will see that popular partnerships, international expansion, and a first-class outlook on “quality over quantity” pays out in the long run! Papa John’s was conceived on October 2, 1984, when Mr. Schnatter knocked out a broom closet inside of his father’s tavern. (Papa Johns International 1) The business was nearly bankrupt, but Mr. Schnatter took initiative and planned to sell $5 dollar pizzas and 50 beers up front in his father’s business. It was that entrepreneurial move to start his own business that would keep that drive going. Only after a short and successful year, Mr. Schnatter would open his first Papa John’s store. Papa John’s started franchising their business in 1986, and on June 8th, 1993 the business...

The company now has nearly 4,200 locations, with operations in all fifty states and thirty-five countries (About Papa John's). To separate themselves in a crowded pizza market Papa John’s has always stressed a higher-end product by touting their ingredients that results in a superior pizza. The company’s strengths include the aforementioned quality ingredients, as well as an internal commitment to their employees by offering industry leading training programs aimed at providing the same consistent service to their customers. They also have an innovative marketing plan that reaches across the United States, specifically targeted for each location where the store has a location. They have also begun partnership with the National Football League and Pepsi to increase their presence during the 2013 football season through in-game promotions and social media activations (Papa John's Tops NFL Alliance With NFL Network 'Thursday Night Football' Campaign , 2013). The biggest strategy advantage Papa John’s has over their competition is the small amount of capital needed to invest in store location. Papa Johns Case Analysis

...Danielle Heyde MGMT 441 Papa John’s Case Papa John’s Inc. Papa John’s has grown exponentially since it was started in 1985, however with management changing hands, and the economy changing there are some issues that lie within the organization. If Papa John’s wants to open 200-300 stores per year they have to do something different. The pizza industry is very mature and becoming saturated so in order to gain a competitive advantage they have to differentiate themselves from others in the industry. Earnings and sales are much slower in industries that are mature than those industries that are emerging. The barriers to entry are very low for the pizza industry, anyone can open up a pizza place which will create a new competitor. Individuals have a lot of choices when it comes to eating out so in order to grow exponentially something needs to set them apart from others since their “better ingredients, better pizza” strategy is no longer holding up. So what can Papa John’s do to set themselves different from everyone else? They can begin by refining their existing product line and expand to different lines. By improving the quality of their existing products and ultimately creating the best pizza possible it is going to take trial and error, ask the consumers what they like/do not like about the pizza. They could begin to expand their lines of service by developing a new chain of restaurants or begin to sell their unique garlic dipping sauce in grocery stores, which would...

...Larry A. Shervington Jr. PHI 314 PAPA Term Paper 12/10/2015 Richard Mason developed the “PAPA” model as a way of characterizing ethics and moral compass as they relate to the information technology industry. As we further progress deeper into the era of information technology these ethics become a more prevalent part of our daily lives. From education and banking to medical and motor vehicles, information technology has now become as much of a constant in human life as ever. It’s because of this rapid growth and integral involvement in every aspect of how we as humans choose to live that we must take into consideration the intentions of how we ethically or unethically choose to use the technology that continues to develop before our eyes. Privacy Privacy as it pertains to information technology is very relevant and important in today’s society. With inventions like “The Cloud”, Email, and online banking it is very easy for people to have their privacy violated. I have had an old Facebook account get hacked into and various emails were sent out to people on my friend’s list. Whoever hacked into my account obviously had access to my private messages, they could see my entire friends list, and even make posts and send messages as if they were me. This was a clear violation of my privacy. As social media sites and other web based functions are used by young adults and children, their online protection has come into question. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act is...
