People Never Change

In many cases, people go to school for years to master a profession for the economic benefits, whether or not they actually enjoy it. To be a productive worker in society, one must enjoy their profession, or whatever they may do. Fromm states that ever since the industrial revolution, people have worked simply for the money. In “Work in an Industrial Society,” Erich Fromm shows that people do not care about working, that they only work for the money, and that it leads to people becoming more lazy and apathetic. People do not have the same enjoyment of work as they did in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the eighteenth century. Back then, people worked to feel like they have accomplished something. In today’s world, people get up in the morning to go to work with one goal: to get out of there as early and as quickly as possible. Before, people worked to not just make a living but to obtain satisfaction with their job. No matter how basic the job was they felt that they made a difference. In “Work, Labor, Play,” W.H Auden states that Miss Hannah Arendt defines people as workers and laborers. Workers are interested in what they do as well as what society pays for their work while laborers are people who have a job for just the paycheck and to support the people that depend on them. Around the times of the Industrial Revolution, the type of worker shifted from workers to laborers. People became a part of a machine that produced whatever needed to be made in order to complete the product. People only worked for the paycheck and nothing more. It was a way of survival rather then a career that one could have passion for. When a group of people hate their job, they become unmotivated workers whose goal for the day is to survive the dreadful hours rather than to spread their passion for their work. People become apathetic when they do something that they have no interest in. Today, having a job is viewed as a burden, because you would have to spend time working on something you do not like and would also have to spend time with people that annoy you. From Fromm’s “Work in an Industrial Society”, he shows how society sees working differently than before. The reason for most workers’ ‘working’ mentality is usually to work for money to buy items that they need and to have money for their family to survive. According to C.W Mills, people are able to learn from their work and able to develop skills. But their work is their lives not just a job. During the Industrial Revolution this concept of work was lost. From then on it has been mainly about making a living no matter the job. P. Drucker points out that, “work appears as something unnatural, a disagreeable, meaningless, and stultifying condition of getting the pay check, devoid of dignity as well as of importance.”(Fromm 201). Fromm reveals that people become lazier with their attitude toward their work. Nowsdays, people are not emotionally connected with their jobs. This usually leads to them hating what they do, who they work with, and everything else about their career. In the past people used to work with a passion that would push them to become better workers. Unfortunately, people do not have the same attitude as people once did back then. In this post-Industrial Revolution world we live in today, many people work long and hard hours in any job whether they like it or not. With long hours of unforgiving work, people despise almost anything they do because it takes away from their own personal time. In “Men at Work” by Anna Quindlen, she says that before, there was the ‘five o’clock dad’ who had time at home to watch TV, have quality time with their family and actually have time to sit down and eat dinner with their family. With hours and professions nowadays, these ‘five o’clock dads’ are slowly dying out because of endless hours at the office. This new style of working causes peoples’ attitudes of work to change from one of zeal and passion to one of apathy and disgust. If they did not have families or personal standards they had to meet, they would probably not be wasting their time and energy on these jobs. The attitude is always the same with any job; people work without fervor, ardor, or devotion anymore. The Industrial Revolution gave people a sense of purpose to their jobs because unemployment was widespread and they were actually doing something new, hip, and something that would help them further themselves and even their families, no matter the pay it came with. The attitude of post-Industrial Revolution workers is the same as they are now; many work a dead-end nine to five that they don’t like and continue going to work because of the benefits and accumulated pay and raises. Before the industrial; revolution, people worked hard, no matter what money they made. They all worked and felt accomplished at the end of the day. Today, the average worker does not have the same attitude. When I worked at McDonalds I saw many people work their eight hour shift without caring whether or not the customers were happy. At the end the day they forgot about everything and went home before they could be assigned overtime. They only had any feeling about their job when they had to work; there was no attachment to their work outside of the establishment. Their attitude and methods of working are the same as they were back then. They worked for the paycheck and nothing more. From the Industrial Revolution til’ the twenty-first century, workers’ attitudes toward their jobs have not changed. They do not see work the same way people did in the past. Fromm is corrected about peoples’ attitudes in their jobs, in that they have not changed since the Industrial Revolution. People do not see that work is something that can benefit them, rather, they just see it as something to keep them and their family running. In “Work, Labor, Play” and “Men at Work” both Auden and Quindlen show that workers would rather have a job that they would consider ‘interesting’ that would take away from their personal time than a job that was not ideal that provided a little more family time at the end of the day. In society today it is sad to say that people work to live instead of live to work.

Societal Norms vs. Change

...Name: Course: Date: Instructor: Societal Norms vs. Change People tend to stick to what they know, what has been normal and passed down to them from generations and apply these things to their own lives. Communities are simply afraid of change and afraid of the way it may affect their ways of living for the worst. Change will always affect different people and communities differently, whether it is positively or negatively. Following old traditions within small communities has both costs and benefits. The question is whether or not change could overcome both the benefits and costs of following old traditions within the community. According to Nancy Scheper-Hughes, an anthropologist and the author of The Anthropological Looking Glass, communities, such as small villages from Ireland like Ballybran, need to accept change to be able to learn the more modern ways of looking at situations. Scheper-Hughes critiques the Irish villager’s ways of living and, whether or not she actually noticed, compares this village to American way of living. Villages such as Ballybran may have a different way of living, but this does not necessarily mean it should be looked at as uncivilized or the wrong way, though change may have been a wise choice for the villagers, which Scheper-Hughes was trying to imply. Furthermore, Maxine Hong Kingston, the author of No Name Woman, emphasizes on the risks and effects of change when born into such a strict community such as a woman born into Chinese customs...

Walls Are Not Necessary in Modern Society

...separation between things that should be together. There are many types of “walls” in society today which include, but are not limited to, prejudice and separation. “Walls” like that do more harm than good to our society. Some people may think otherwise, saying that many metaphorical walls need to separate us in order to keep peace between certain things. Whether it be countries or certain groups of people. The other half of people that think differently, think that there would be no need for these “walls” if we could get rid of them slowly and find a way for everyone to work together. These barriers tend to have overall negative effects on people if they don’t have any “wiggle” room. These enclosures limit the freedom of an individual. They are no longer able to move about freely when you have certain barricades in the way. Next, dividers limit the person’s mindset. “Walls” can cause people to feel less than important by restricting their freedom of thought. And last, obstructions can end up causing problems or altercations. This is caused when a barrier is broken and the individual has to overcome the impending hurdles being thrown at them. “Walls” are not necessary in society because they limit freedom to “roam,” freedom to think, and they force people to have conflicts. “Good fences make good neighbors.” This is what the neighbor said in a poem by Robert Frost called Mending Wall. What the neighbor means is that “good fences” create good relations between both sides of the...

Change

...Some say change can be scary, others say embrace it. I used to be afraid of change, of what might force me to escape my comfort zone. Everyone goes through change throughout their lifetime whether it’s wanted or not. For me, change had its biggest impact on my life during my senior year of high school. I was just your average teenage girl, I had the three best friends anyone could ask for, the normal teenage drama, but was not the most confident girl. One event in particular would change my life forever, and it would require me to step out of my comfort zone and take risks. My name is Hanna, and this is my story. I was never one to take chances. It was always my girls and me doing our thing. I could pretty much tell them anything without them judging me. We were a pretty tight circle and never in a million years did I think that would change. It wasn’t something that happened overnight. We gradually drifted apart until we barely spoke anymore. It all began one day when Brooke and I were talking to our friend, Ally, on spare. She was talking about how she liked to visit her friends who were away at school and party with them. She mentioned how she was going down again the upcoming weekend and invited us to go. Brooke, being very outgoing, instantly agreed to go, but I was hesitant. I barely knew the people, and it was most definitely not in my comfort zone. After much convincing from Brooke, I finally caved in and was actually a little excited to go. I never would have thought...

Helping Others

...way to help the people around you and make a difference in their life. I decided to choose this topic because every now and then I see that sometimes we are either giving too much or not enough. In general, this topic is very important to me; one of my life goals is to give whatever I can to anyone in need. I always make myself available to friends, family, and/or even strangers. There is a satisfying feeling when you know you are making a difference in someone’s life. Helping others can change your whole outlook on life for ever. Helping the people you love is such an honor. There is no one better to help you out than someone you care about deeply (2011, April 3). I believe that we are supposed to do whatever we need to for our family. For example, my sister, shelby, was recently in a car accident and I did everything I could for her. The accident was not her fault, but she was the one left with a totaled car and two hand injuries. I had to help her get dressed, take showers, cutting up her food, etc. She was so devastated that she could not do anything herself, so I gladly gave her all of my time and more. As a family, we should always stick together and help each other until for some reason we cannot anymore. There is such abundance love when helping out the people you care about. It is a blessing in disguise helping out people who are strangers to you. Sometimes we are a little skeptical to offer our assistance to people we hardly know, but you never know what can come...

Effective Leadership

...an adaptive challenge can be found external to the current ways of operating. While it is possible to solve the technical issues by using the current expertise it may not be possible to solve the adaptive challenges in the same way. In the case of Figgie International the adaptive challenge was never identified. There have been resistances from the divisional heads for the changes mooted by the consultants. The resistances were either out of their anxiety to meet the budgeted bottom lines or out of genuine concerns about the change in the production process which ultimately would affect the quality of the output. While there can be no argument on the superiority of technical and adaptive approaches to organizational changes – since both are needed – the strategic principles of leadership are to be applied for making progress on complex, adaptive problems. According to Heifetz leadership means influencing the community to face its problems rather than influencing the community to follow the vision of the leader. Further it is pointed out that the authority can be used as a resource for leadership by: • Providing a holding environment for containing the stresses of adaptive changes •...

Being true because of the people of the past who have experience it, and tell it as they remember it, at times over exaggerating there part in history or even the situation. One can never know what exactly happened in history. In 1984, written by George Orwell, there world was being controlled and change whenever they felt it was needed, or they altered their truth to make it sound better than it really was. Reaction Paper: the Interlude

...for fatally injuring Cyril and leaving him cripple. Willis hoped that the people of San Fernando had forgotten and forgiven his past self; however they had not. When he returned he was confronted by Little John who was enraged at him for what he had done to Cyril. Willis had no choice to try and defend himself from Little John. This made him the killer he was once; reliving his past. The author’s message is clearly showing that no one can escape from his or her past. This happens in reality each and every day. I can relate to Anthony’s message extensively. I was not always a Christian. In my younger days I use to be a very rebellious person, who would fight a lot and even curse out my parents. I went to a youth camp and the pastor’s message touched me. I no longer wanted to be the impure person I was. I wanted a change and a new mind set, but sadly, change does not come that easy. My past was still there, waiting to be dug up somehow. People who I had hurt still remembered me. They did not believe that a person can change so easily. One day I was walking from school and I was confronted by a young girl’s mother, who had supposedly committed suicide because of me. Her mother was frantic and attacked me. The police even had to pry her off of me. This is proof that a person can never get away or hide from their past. I had forgotten about so many things I did in my past but the people I hurt will never forget it. The author’s message is a very strong message...

Threats on Virtue Ethics

...Threats on Virtue Ethics Situationist theories is now known to pose a threat on to virtue ethics like Aristotle’s. Aristotle’s theory is very simple and straight forward, once people have the ‘right’ or ‘proper’ virtues, with practice it will never change. In this paper I am going to argue against Aristotelian ethics because people do not always keep their virtues in certain situations. Aristotle claims that once a virtue is learned, ‘come to light’, practice and lived by, the person practicing it will never change it. Aristotelian ethics is the practice of virtues, a median between the two vices that is “right”, also known as virtue ethics. Once someone finds the correct balance or the golden median between the extremes, vices, it becomes a virtue once practiced. This is something someone can practice and it becomes habit. Once done enough, it becomes who you are, the very thing you stand for and “will never change”. An Aristotelian argument would go something like this: (P1) A golden mean is practiced. (P2) Golden mean becomes a virtue. (P3) Virtue is something that is never broken. (C1)Virtue is practiced and never broken no matter the situation. This is where I do not agree, “Will never change”. I will provide an example of what I perceive as virtue ethics. This can be related to boot camp. Kids go to boot camp because they are misbehaving, or not acting the way their parents think they should. They don’t value the right things, they have no virtues. Once at boot...

Stories of a Social Recluse

...In the essay “Pass”, Boyer Rickel tells the story of his childhood where he was somewhat of a social recluse. He was the opposite of an exhibitionist, he spent his boyhood watching people, intrigued by the way they interacted with one another. He speaks of how social situations change the way people act and the need to fit in changes people and makes them act like someone they are not. He was never really accepted nor rejected because he never put himself out there enough for any group to take him in. Social culture and the pressures of society do change people and make them act like someone they are not, however, the solution to this issue is to find a group of people you are comfortable with, who you can be yourself around, and stick with them, not hide in the shadows excluding yourself from society as Rickel did. Rickel starts off his essay talking about when he used to go to his favorite barbershop to Rays with his father for a flat top haircut. It seems as though he and his father had a good relationship, during the walk to the barbershop, the two conversed just like normal, however, when they finally swung open the door and set foot inside the shop, things changed. His father became very self-conscious, tiptoeing around conversations making sure not to say the wrong thing, and using his son as a topic of conversation: “my father, stepping through Ray’s door, became someone else; how he suddenly treated me as an other, to be discussed as if not present” (194). Rickel describes...
