Perception of Media

“Many choices reflect your hopes and not your fears”. Some will argue that we make choices based on the moment and in fear. I believe that if we want to be heard, you have to make choices that will leave a mark on you, but in the long run, you will reach your destination. Some of the greatest influences in the world had to go to extreme measure to get want they wanted. In author Sultana Yusufali “My body is my own business” readers should learn that when we perceive ourselves as independent and proud individuals, we make choices that impact other in a positive way.

While perception is essential to making and overcoming choices, so is confronting the truth of our own fears. In Sultana’s “My body is my own business” she sees a hijab is nothing but a tiny piece of clothing that covers the face of a woman; it is also a way for Muslim women to respect and honor their tradition. It is, in her eyes, an accepted part of her culture. However, many people from the Western civilization may see it differently. Some believe that the hijab is forced among Muslim women and that they have no choice but to wear it. Others believe that the hijab is a way of Muslim men to hide Muslim women’s beauty. She strongly expresses her feeling on how the world sees her as an “Oppressed female” because of the choices she makes. Nowadays in the world, the hijab and multiple things are causing controversy in the media. The world makes the hijab seem like girls are forced to cover up their bodies. But as sultana said, “I am a Muslim woman who, like millions of other Muslim women across the globe, chooses to wear the hijab”. To her, it symbolizes strength, empowerment and confidence and a way to control how others perceive her. Sultana Yusufali “My body is my own business” she explains an example of how the world perceives the hijab. “Couple of girls in Montreal were kicked out of school for dressing like I do. It seems strange that a little piece of cloth would make for such controversy. Perhaps the fear is that I am harboring an Uzi underneath it. You never can tell with those Muslim fundamentalists. ” Sultana expresses her anger toward the media and using sarcasm on how they like are getting kicked out just because they a piece of cloth that the person choose to wear. Today in the media, it deciphers whether this trend, body type, style is “in or out” and if you have the “wrong” style, type or trend, well then you’re going to have to change it. Making people as young as 12, around the world change the way they look using harmful ways.

As seen in ‘My body is my own business’ media is proven to be the ultimate ruler of our choices and how we perceive ourselves. Throughout “My body is my own business” Sultana can relate to this because the media greatly impacts her choices in the clothes she buys and wears. Not only does the media perceive the way we dress, also it affects the choices we make in our everyday lives. The majority of our national uses internet for everything, especially social media. Social media is our biggest enemy, from Facebook to twitter, to snap chat, to Instagram. I personally use social media lots. I check on it every day to see what the newest clothing style is or what updates celebrities have. Basically, I see a really young girl wearing really revealing clothing, just because that was the new trend. Even I get influenced by the social media. The example I see this cool clothing trend, and I will want to purchase it so I ask, ask and ask my mom if I could get the clothing, and I'm sure that many other kids do that to their parents. Making our parent buy it for us even if the trend is bad. Throughout “My body is my own business” Sultana talk about standing up to media and people around her and makes the choices she wants and being proud of it. Just as Sultana is standing up for her choices, I think that I try and do that also. I try to build confidence in myself and make decisions for my own good. Also, try and be a leader and not a follower and do what I want to do without worrying about my surroundings judging me.

In the media, our world and our lives, if we intend to make choices, we must understand the hardships that come our way to impact other in positive ways while seeing ourselves as independent and proud individuals because without both we will fail to make the right choices we could otherwise attain either because we fail without a realistic idea or because we will not have been brave enough in the choices we make. Even if the hardship is out of your comfort zone, it will give you a good turn out in the end. Obstacles like social media, peer pressure, etc. all slow us down but in the long run, it will be worth it.

Perception on Black Men in the Media

...As young black men in the United States, we are, and should be considered an endangered species. We have three strikes against us, young, black and male and that only encompasses just being born. The numbers are quite alarming when you consider that in 2012, black males ages 15 to 19 were nearly four times more likely to commit suicide, six times more likely to be victims of homicide, and eight times more likely to be involved in a firearm-related death than were females of the same age. When it comes to incarceration, African Americans constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population and are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of their white counterparts. In a black man’s lifetime, one in six black men has been incarcerated at one point in time. If current trends continue, one in three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime. And when it comes to our youth, African-Americans represent 26% of juvenile arrests, 44% of youth who are detained, 46% of the youth who are judicially waived to criminal court, and 58% of the youth admitted to state prisons The numbers are alarmingly disproportionate, and I don’t feel like it is getting better. Although there are many contributing factors that make up these numbers, it is believed that inner city crime prompted by social and economic isolation weighs heavily on the results. When you consider the crime and drug arrest rates, African Americans represent...

Audience Perception of Broadcast Media Influence in the Fight Against Youth Restiveness in Nigeria

...INTRODUCTION Restiveness among youths globally and those in Nigeria has become a behaviour pattern which has degenerated into a topical global issue. Youth restiveness portrays man’s negative side of social development. This negative development is rather unfortunate and has become one of the many security challenges facing man in the contemporary society. In many occasions, lives and properties worth millions of naira have been lost or vandalized and some razed down by restive youths. As observed by Chukwuemeka and Agbara (2010), human society and in fact the entire universe is simply and squarely a complex entity. In view of this, individuals and groups have their complexities, needs, aspirations, hopes, goals, opinions, views and values which could be social, economic, religious, psychological or political. Consequently, there is bound to be restiveness among different groups of people especially youths who are at their prime age. The term youth has been variously defined. Ndu (2000) and Yusuf (2001) saw youths as neither adolescents nor children characterized by excessive energy that needs to be exerted, which if not guarded, is channeled into negative tendencies. The United Nations General Assembly and World Bank cited in Adewuyi (2008) defined the youth as people between ages 15 to 24 years. In Nigeria, the people within the age limit of 30 years are considered as youths hence they are allowed to participate in the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC). For this paper...

We Have a Strange Situation in Australia. at a Time When People Seem to Be More Worried by Crime, the Research Evidence Suggests Crime Rates Are Not Increasing. How Can We Explain This Apparent Contradiction?

...influence parliaments and ministries in crime policy management. If the media are found to be reporting an upward trend in crime figures, enough to unease the public, policy makers are put under pressure to increase punishment and change rules relating to procedures of criminal prosecution. Judicial decisions are intended to reflect public opinion; therefore a judge would then feel obliged to hand down harsher sentences (Pfeiffer, Windzio & Kleinmann, 2005). This, in turn, confirms it is imperative to address the substantial difference between the public’s perception of crime rates, and accurate crime statistics. As previous Australian and international research has indicated, a large majority of the public perceives crime rates to be increasing; they also have inaccurate views on the severity of sentencing. “The Australian Public overestimates the proportion of crime that involves violence and underestimates the proportion of charged persons who go on to be convicted and imprisoned” (Roberts & Indermaur, 2009). To help explain this contradiction in Australia, crime statistics have been analyzed and factors that could influence these inaccurate perceptions have been discovered. Two significant factors that influence the perception that crime rates are increasing, is the gender of a person, and the mass media. Widespread studies have ben conducted in countries all over the world to uncover the real perception people have regarding the rates of crime, compared to factual crime...

...Introduction In mass media today, there are numerous gaps between reality and the information that is presented. Seemingly every current issue, whether it’s political, social or otherwise, is reported through so many different outlets and with so many different facts that it’s hard to grasp what the reality is. The role of media in democracy is to represent every perspective and to provide well-researched and accurate information to create an educated and involved society. Media’s representations impact our society’s perception and shared reality. The way media represents a certain topic creates a public perception. Because of media framing, they can show us certain sides of an issue or shine a light on one perspective while effectively dimming the light on another. Because of this, we create perceptions based off of information that may not be whole. With these perceptions, we begin to construct a social reality. Once this reality is created, it is difficult to change it even if we find contradicting information. Because of these reasons, the way media represents information is crucial. The issue that will be discussed in this paper is that of gay marriage, stereotypes of homosexuals, and the scientific side of homosexuality. The way media has represented this topic over the past 30 years has varied immensely. We’ve come a long way over the past couple decades and homosexuality is now widely discussed in all forms of media including news, television, advertisements, movies...

The contemporary world exposes children to all sorts of audio and visual media. These media contain various messages concerning race and gender. Out of such media messages, children are in a position to create perceptions on various races and gender. Disney movies are an example of the media that are consumed by children. The movies impact a lot on how children understand the meaning of race, class and gender. The continued consumption of such media by children would only serve to further shape their various perceptions. This paper sets out to show that there are numerous media messages that can impact on the understanding of race and gender by children. The media is powerful in terms of the messages it relays to the audiences. The social judgments of viewers can be greatly influenced by what they see on television news (Mastro, Lapinski, Kopacz & Behm-Morawitz, 2009). Fear of Crime

...contradiction? Word count: 2089 The threat of crime victimisation is ever-present in our daily lives. Despite the best laid defences, each one of us are likely to become a victim of crime at some point in our life time. Such direct experiences with crime can leave devastating effects, on the victims and their loved ones, for years to come. However, the chance of becoming a victim of crime is actually very slim. Media programming and reports are an indirect form of exposure to crime and the impact crime has on its victims. The likelihood of being exposed to crime through the media is far greater than chances of victimisation. In this technology-based age, it's almost impossible to avoid crime in the media. On countless occasions, the Australian public have shown a rising perception rate of crime and have a particular fear of burglary, motor vehicle theft and robbery. However, this widely-held view is in stark contrast to actual rates of crime over the same period of time. The public's fear and perception of rising crime within Australia is strongly influenced by the media through a selective process of over-emphasising violence and crime in news reporting and television programs, portrayed without context or consequence. Recent Australian studies suggest the general public continues to perceive crime rates to be rising and that burglary, motor vehicle theft and robbery are the most commonly feared crimes. Weatherburn and Indermaur (2004) surveyed 1109 adults living in New South...

Constructing the Public Perception of Sports

...Constructing the Public Perception of Sports Mass media has become a dominant factor on sports culture in today’s society. “Mass media serve as a dominant hegemonic force in American culture, resulting in the construction and reinforcement of narratives, particularly in professional sports” (Berg & Harthcock). The media can be held responsible for creating the majority of the public’s perception of sports to this day. The heavy dosage of sports communication, in every aspect thinkable, has altered and constructed the influence of sports on millions of people. The sports communication field has become a vast entity and proved to be a profitable market. However, the communicative process regarding sports information has lately cannibalized the true essentials of sports coverage. Sports in general have grown dramatically along with the growth of media. Growth is normally good, but the growth of sports communication in general is so massive that it has become over saturated with inadequate information. The focus of what the media communicates with audiences today is hardly ever statistical information like how many runs Kansas City pitcher, Yordano Ventura, allowed but more on his instigating attitude and why he throws 100mph fuzz balls at guys’ heads so often. After all, Major League Baseball is known as “the show” for a reason. It is easier for the media to narrate exaggerated, unexpected events. These narrations often exclude the true sports coverage essentials. However...

The Media in Canadian Politics

...The Media in Canadian Politics 1956 words Media has always been a center of interest of different political intellectuals in Canada. They always tend to use media as a powerful platform to convey their message to the all the stakeholders of Canadian politics. Common people, on the other hand, also use media to transmit their concerns and feedback to their political representatives. Be it the print media, broadcast media or social media, they have always played a significant role in Canadian politics. We have seen the active role of media in the longest election campaign of Canada in recent federal elections. Media influence Canadian politics by serving as an intermediary between the government and the common people, by acting as a public representative, and by shaping people’s perception of the political environment around them. As a common carrier of information for both government and common people, media plays a significant role in Canadian politics. The important part of this role of media is that most of the media act independently to provide unbiased information for both government and common people. This, however, is not always the case. We will discuss biased part of media later in this essay. As an intermediary between government and common people, media reports the news, helps determine the critical issues to be discussed, and enables the transparency in the political structure. Reporting the news is most basic and essential function of media. Common people and...

In this study, we intend to discuss problems associated to media influence through an investigative study of its commercial structure. The study also tries to specify gender stereotypes as used in persuasive advertising technique. Humans organize their knowledge about the world sorting and simplifying the information they receive (Gu 291). They tend to establish cognitive schemes that are certain representations of reality portraying its basic elements and features (Everett 387). The schemes developed by humans are responsible for the definition of our perception and view of the world. They have significant influence our social understanding, situation, anticipation and emotional control.
