A Review of Literature and Reflections in Real Life Experiences
Conflict Management and Resolutions

Author's Note: This paper was prepared for Conflict Research Preview course

Part One: Definition of literal terms

Law of Social Relations (Deutsch, 2006): "The characteristic processes and effects elicited by a given type of social relationship also tend to elicit that type of social relationship."(Deutsch, 2006, p. 29) Positive and trusting gestures will result cooperative responses while single sided and dominating gestures revoke competitive responses. Goal interdependency is key for understanding cooperation/competition relationships perceived by the involved parties as "win-loose/win-win" situations.

Skills and Knowledge (Deutsch, 2006): skills and knowledge are key requirements in order to predict, avoid, manage and resolve conflicts. Deutsch (Deutsch, 2006, p. 18) refers to three levels of skills. First, skills have to do with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Second, it is emphasized that skills are required to sustain a cooperative conflict resolution process. Third, skills are essential for developing effective group problem-solving and decision-making processes.

Biases (Thompson, Nadler, Lount, Jr, 2006): are explained as "systematic errors and parterre fallacy" (Thompson, Nadler, Lount, Jr, p. 4). Errors in judgements towards other people and sometimes even towards ourselves is systematic and originated in misconceptions, prejudice and gut feelings. Seeking a biased opinion to deal with situations ignores real factual data gathering and may lead to errors which could result in a conflict.

Differences Between Sociological Perspectives

...functionalist perspective, the conflict perspective and the interactionist perspective. The functionalist perspective focuses on society as a whole, and that each member of society contributes equally. Theorists involved with the functionalist perspective are Emile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons, and Robert Merton. Durkheim was a major theorist involved in the observation of “anomie”, a state where norms are unclear, confused or not present. In the conflict perspective, society is viewed as a struggle. The theorists involved are Karl Marx, W.E.B Dubois and Ida Wells-Barnett. Karl Marx concluded that the power struggle between social classes was inevitable, in the Marxist View. Lastly, the interactionist perspective focuses on everyday social interactions and explains society as a whole.
