Often advice administered by friends has been quite excellent and developed from personal experience, and it should be taken seriously. However, there are people in the world who like to discover lessons the difficult way, rather than taking the word of others. For example, a person will advise another person, not to read My Antonia, because it is a boring drab story like most books written a long time ago, despite once being great and well-received (people’s interests change over 100 years). Furthermore, the person receiving this advice may be slightly stubborn and read the book anyway, and that person will find out for themselves how awful the book truly is. My Antonia was not a good book, it was in fact a very awful and boring book. At no point in the story did it ever become interesting or exciting (a common theme in many of these stories). Furthermore, the overall story of its completion is one of the most stupid and pointless story arcs ever. Also, the characters (another common issue I have with older literature) are not interesting at all. ...language histories about California were written by Euro-Americans who came to the state during the Gold Rush which was barely based on travel literature. Basically, most of these histories were a product of the racial and racist ideologies of Manifest Destiny in the region. To the disappointment of many historians, the original inhabitants of the state of California contested the dominant narratives of past events, but most of their documents remained hidden in archives at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley. Most individuals were denied access to these documents which would later change the history of California and bring a new perspective that was not present in the white narratives. With the emergence of Bear Flag Resistance Committee, more narratives began to emerge showing that the white narratives were far much biased and provided flaw history than most people could ever think or imagine. Antonia Castaneda, a member of the second wave of the Chicana/o scholarship, pioneered the emergence of counter-narratives to question romanticized stories of the mission era and to the still dominant narratives of the manifest destiny. History shows that most of the immigrants in the region began their work in the 1840s with the increasing number of Euro-Americans bringing racist ideologies to the region which had known peace for a very long term. Was she the politically aggressive and dominating wife of Mark Antony as Cicero and Plutarch describe her? Or was she a loyal mother and wife, as Asconius and Appian suggest? These contrasting accounts in the ancient sources warrant further investigation. This thesis seeks to explore the nature of Fulvia’s role in history to the extent that the evidence permits. Fulvia is most famous for her activities during Antony’s consulship (44 BC) and his brother Lucius Antonius’ struggle against C. Octavian in the Perusine War (41-40 BC). But there is a discrepancy among the authors as to what extent she was actually involved. Cicero, Octavian and Antony, who were all key players in events, provide their own particular versions of what occurred. Later authors, such as Appian and Dio, may have been influenced by these earlier, hostile accounts of Fulvia. This is the first study in English to make use of all the available evidence, both literary and material, pertaining to Fulvia. Modern scholarship has a tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on events towards the end of Fulvia’s life, in particular the Perusine War, about which the evidence is much more abundant in later sources such as Appian and...
