...The New Thinking on Followership and Leadership Philosophy The New Thinking on Followership and Leadership Philosophy Is good followership more important than good leadership? Followership is defined as the ability or willingness to follow a leader. Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes. Effective followers can develop productive leader behavior just as effective leaders shape people into good followers. The new thinking on followership and leadership philosophy is very important In my opinion, good followers are just as important as the leader. According to Daft, “without followers, there are no leaders.” (Daft, 2010, pg. 196) People are followers more often than leaders, and effective leaders and followers share similar characteristics. An effective follower is both independent and active in the organization. To be an effective follower, one must not be alienated, conforming, passive, or pragmatic. Most people think of followers as ‘yes-men’ but this is far from the truth. A good leader would not be considered a good or effective leader if his or her followers always agreed with whatever the leader said. Roger Adair states, “A follower shares in an influence relationship among leaders and other followers with the intent to support leaders who reflect their mutual purpose.” There are five levels of rationale that followers...

...Personal Leadership Philosophy According to Rost, leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes. As much as I agree with this statement, I also have my differences. I would define leadership as a process dependent on interactive, “influence” relationships between people who intend substantial changes reflecting their mutual purposes. The essence of leadership lies in the process of influencing. Let's say that influence means one person's actions designed to change another person's attitudes, beliefs, values or behavior. Without influence we cannot exercise leadership. The process of influencing cannot occur without relationships between people that make that influence possible. I use the term “interactive” to show these influence relationships as being mutual, reciprocal and multi-directional. In other words, followers influence leaders, leaders influence followers, and peers influence each other. The words “leader” and “follower” are obvious by their absence in my definition. Specifically including those terms can mistakenly imply fixed roles or positions. Today, corporate has given way to team structures with more than one leader. More importantly, I firmly believe that in any one leadership relationship, followers become leaders and leaders become followers depending on the situation. So in my definition, I just refer to “people.” It is widely accepted that the purpose of leadership is to create...

...Leadership Philosophy I believe in leadership humility. When your team see you actively engaging them with questions about certain entities within the workplace, they immediately feel as if you are making a genuine effort to obtain their input on important decisions. This humility in leadership shows that you are not too proud to ask question and to ask for help when needed. In 2011 I started teaching first grade students. At the beginning of the year I was asked to be our grade level team leader. All of the first grade teachers were new but I was asked to be the team leader because I was the first hire. The team before our team was plagued with unprofessionalism and wasn’t well organized. As a first year teacher I was terrified of making many mistakes and leading our team to further professional destruction. To minimize the first year damage I sat down individually with each team member to gage their excitement about the new school year, to learn about their teaching styles and to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Through these conversations, I learned the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and how to come up with an effective plan for each person to pick up the slack in their team member’s area of weakness. Also, through these conversations I revealed to each of my team members my inexperience not only as a teacher but as a school leaders and how I would be relying on their given field of expertise to help my leadership style and vice versa. We designed...

...Leadership Philosophy NUR-300 – Developing the Baccalaureate Role Mesa State University Analysis of Leadership Style and Nursing Theory Effective leadership is key to life and success in an organization. Leadership ultimately brings success and the potential that is an organization and its people. There are a number of leadership and nursing theories that have been developed over the years, and trying to develop my own leadership philosophy is a bit overwhelming, I have thought about leaders I have encountered in my career and life in general, considering what I liked about their leadership style and what I didn’t. I find the Democratic style, the Transformational approach, while addressing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Betty Neuman’s Systems Model to create the best outcomes for my patients and organization. Democratic style where the leader involves others in the decision making process, welcome others’ ideas, especially when considering they will be the ones most affected by the change. Involving others who are in different positions in your organization gives you input from the “front line” and gives you different perspectives and what challenges are being faced within the organization. The American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC, n.d.) points out the Democratic style can be challenging if there are a wide range of concerns or opinions and there isn’t a clear way to reach an equitable final decision. Changing Minds.org discusses using Democratic...

...Philosophy of Leadership HCS/525 August 5th, 2012 Philosophy of Leadership As a leader, it is important to be able to see when there are issues but also it is important as a leader to be able to handle issues or problems in a way that is democratic. A successful leader is one who is able to lead their employees but also has the respect and trust of his or her staff. All organizations go through changes and challenges and that is when strong leadership steps in and tries to carry the organization and prepare the organization for these challenges. The role of a health care leader is every challenging because in many ways it is not like a leadership role compared to other organizations. When you are a leader in a health care organization your in charge of how your organization treats and care for a patient. This means that as a leader you hold the well-being of your patients in your hands because as a leader you represent the health care organization. A leader in health care should follow by example and be able to make decisions that are not always the most popular decision because the climate of health care can change often, especially economically but also have the respect of their employees. A health care leader should also be transparent and be open when it comes to communication and being able to express to the employees expectations from the organization. A good leader should also be able to lend their ear to employees so they can...

...Choosing an Ethical Villain for Iron Man 3 Grand Canyon University: MGT-605 05/22/2016 Choosing an Ethical Villain for Iron Man 3 The purpose of this paper is to discuss the controversial decisions taken by the production company Marvel Studios in the movie Iron Man 3 and to evaluate the effectiveness of the leadership techniques used, in terms of powerbases, influence tactics, and leadership style by CEO, Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter. This paper will also evaluate the potential outcome of the situation from a servant leadership perspective. Ethical Situation Shane Black, the director and co-writer of Iron Man 3, in an interview with Uproxx, has revealed that he was forced to change the entire original Iron Man 3 script in order to swap the gender of the film’s villain from female to male after pressure from the production company Marvel, which feared female toy merchandise would not sell as well as the male version (Ryan, 2016). From the interview, it sounds like Rebecca Hall could have been the real villain behind Aldrich Killian instead of what we saw on the big screen. Changes like this happen during rewrites all the time, but hearing that this decision was made simply because it would impact toy sales is shocking. This is the ugly side of having a franchise that pulls in millions of dollars in revenue from merchandise. Black points out the decision must have been made by Ike who has already been called out several times for his lack of diversity, in terms of gender...

...My leadership philosophy started back at home where the discipline and motivation grew, from seeing my father go to work in uniform, to listening to all the stories he told, that was when I decide I wanted to be in the military. Being a part of a family that always strives to do the right thing at all times and to show a good example has helped me to adapt well to the USA military life. It has helped me to understand the importance to be a good leader, to be a good mentor, and to always do the right thing. As a member of my family it was well engraved in me that we always hold our last name up high and to never do anything to compromise the honor of our last name. I try to live my life so that I do not bring disgrace to my family name nor make bad decisions. How can I lead Soldiers if I don’t know what to do or how to do it? That has always been my way of thinking, because I can’t ask my soldiers to do a task well if I do not know how to do it myself. We are all capable of learning, the same way babies learn to walk by crawling first, we need to be able to follow before we can lead. We need to study different types of leadership from other people, so we can create our own...

...My approach on the philosophy of leadership is to promote fearlessness and collaboration amongst the team and remaining humble. One of my favorite leaders who exemplified these leadership qualities is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was one of history’s greatest leaders due to his ability to control his ego while still pushing for the progression of the nation. Not only did he do this, but he was aware of his own weaknesses. Therefore, Lincoln appointed people to positions to fill the gaps of his weaknesses. Additionally, Lincoln proved to have great collaboration skills, more specifically, his listening capabilities and his ability to create a climate free for active engagement in debate. On the other hand, for anyone trying to enhance their...

...I believe that leadership is a process where one individual strengthens, adds, and uses their skill set to positively influence and motivate the team they lead. Every leader is different and has strengths, skills, and abilities that differ from other leaders. Therefore, every leader is unique, but all leaders strive to improve and use their leadership skills to the best of their ability. My belief on leadership has evolved and changed numerous times since stepping into a program that fully embraces different leadership styles, abilities, and ways of looking at leadership. I have found that this view on leadership is one that I am currently fond of and see a connection to as I develop into my own unique leadership style. My philosophy on...

...Developing a good leadership in any echelon of an organization is crucial. Leaders should understand that their actions dictate the command climate of their unit. Being right and looking right to their Soldiers, instills an example for all to follow. Throughout my 13 years of military service, I have learned good and bad leadership styles. I have developed what I believe to be a good leadership philosophy during my career. I believe in setting the example for Soldiers to follow. Leaders who make statements, “do as I say, not as I do” should not be in a position of authority. We must inspire our Soldiers through motivation and teamwork. This can be accomplished by setting the example for them to follow. Much like officers and...

...Leaders strive for the best in their organization and work hard to become successful. My leadership philosophy may be different from others, however, it may be effective as others. Leadership can be learned and practiced. I consider if you practice with ethics in mind then there will be no issues with your followers or organization. Leaders that practice unethically are often viewed in a negative perspective and often ruin their careers. Great leaders are hard workers and assist in improving the organization. Some are natural leaders, however, it has been stated leaders are made. My view of leadership consists of different types of leadership styles. It has been disclosed that leaders who possess the charismatic personality have the most effect...

...will also show them the big picture of the task or mission. Majority of the time, I will ask each individual how they will complete a task to see their thought process. If it is a good idea I will let them carry on, but if I can point out another way that I think is more efficient or beneficial to the NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS 3 mission, then I will advise them. I want my future leaders to think of multiple ways to accomplish tasks so they can learn to think outside the box. My philosophy in letting soldiers think independently and not be micromanage will show my future leaders that when they are in a leadership position they too will not micromanage unless warranted. I witness soldiers who were micromanage and could not show their leadership qualities. I knew then not to do to micromanage when I was put in a leadership position. I was always a soldier and person who showed initiative in everything I was involved in. I wanted to show other leaders that I could be left to accomplish a task or job with limited supervision. Today, I look for the same type of soldier that shows initiative in becoming better leaders and soldiers. I find it easier to prep them for future success because they want what you have earned. They seek the guidance to improve and to become better leaders. I just have to show them guidance in the right direction both academically and militarily. I constantly show interest...

...In this paper, I will discuss my philosophy of what I believe an effective leader should be; and the qualities that we as leaders should possess. My leadership philosophy in my opinion, is very simple; teach, coach, mentor and lead by example. Soldiers are the Army’s largest and greatest asset. As a good leader it is our duty to shape their minds and teach to standard according to the guidelines that are set forth in regulations and publications especially in today’s ever changing military. As a Non-Commissioned Officer, it is our duty to mentor and groom our subordinates and prepare our future leaders to take our place and move up within the ranks. Soldiers need to exceed the normal standards. As our Country continually engages in conflicts...

...2015). Nestle is a Swiss multinational food and beverage company that is most well-known for their candy and confectioneries, however, they also produce baby formula, coffee, tea, dairy products, ice cream, pet foods, snacks, frozen foods and even bottled water (Andrei, 2015). What many people don’t realize is that Nestle is considered to be one of the most hated companies in the world according to Andrei (2015). The reasons for this are due to allegations of child labor, unethical promotion, manipulating uneducated mothers, pollution, price fixing and mislabeling. The most recent scandal involves nestles involvement in water exploitation globally. This article will focus on the ethical issues surrounding this latest scandal and Tim Browns leadership tactics and styles while dealing with this crisis. For the last four years California has seen record setting droughts. Despite this Nestle has continued to bottle and sell water from their plant in Sacramento California, draining up to 80 million gallons of water a year from Sacramento aquifers (Bacher, 2015). Due to this the bottling plant has become a target for a water coalition that has highlighted predatory water profiteering actions by Nestle in various cities and countries. These coalitions also point out the disastrous results on the environment and the mega profits that are being received at the cost of citizens and taxpayers. The coalition contends that Nestlé pays only 65 cents for each 470 gallons it pumps out of the ground...
