This case study is of a male patient that was observed while interning at Action Potential Physical Therapy clinic. The patient was being seen for pain in his right shoulder and diagnosed with poor rotator cuff muscle strength. He was referred so that the physical therapist can help reduce his symptoms and get him back to his quality of life. Back in 2004 he had a rotator cuff repair and initially began receiving physical therapy. The patient however did not finish his treatment and always felt slight discomfort. It was not until recently that he began feeling more troubling and sharp pain in his shoulder. His symptoms have been chronic but mild, he did not seek out professional help until 2/7/17. He experienced discomfort when he slept on …show more content…
“These agents are thermal [heat and cold], electrical, sound, light and mechanical, they are used to reduce pain and joint swelling, reduce muscle spasm, restore functional joint mobility, increase local blood flow to injured tissues and deliver medications subcutaneously in conjunction with other procedures” (Pensavalle n.d.). The modality the physical therapist chose to use was called an ultrasound. “Ultrasound uses high-frequency acoustic (sound) waves, rather than electromagnetic energy, to elicit thermal and nonthermal effects in deep tissue to depths of 3 cm or more” (Prentice 2011, p.364). The physical therapist uses this modality to start him with so that he may be more relaxed and comfortable when performing his exercises. When his time was over for the ultrasound, she had him pedal on the arm bike for 6 minutes. Once he finished that exercise, she showed him a stability exercise. He had to roll the ball on the wall with his hand flat on the ball making a circular motion doing 3 sets with 10 reps. He performed shoulder internal and external rotation with a rubber band doing 2 sets with 10 reps. His next exercise was the shoulder side lying external rotation with a 5 pound weight doing 3 sets of 10. The last exercises he did for the afternoon was the shoulder serratus punch with a 5 pound dumbbell performing 2 sets of 10 reps. When finished with all his exercises he …show more content…
The physical therapist no longer uses kinesiotape on his shoulder but he still receives the same modalities from the beginning at the start and end of his treatment. In addition to his previously given exercises he now performs bicep curls with a 40 pound weight doing 3 sets of 10 reps, and triceps extension with a 20 pound weight doing 3 sets with 10 reps. His time on the bike increased from 6 minutes to 10 minutes, and the band used for mid rows and internal and external shoulder rotation went from a light band to a thicker one. The patient experiences no pain or muscle fatigue when doing his exercises at this

Equine Assisted Therapy

...Equine Assisted Therapy By: Ashley M. Lorenc An ancient Greek sage once said, "The outside of a horse is the best thing for the inside of man." Hippocrates echoed that sentiment when he spoke of "ride rhythm" (Bliss). I have found there is an unspoken magic that horses posses when it comes to healing human beings. This experience is something that could never be taught or reached in a “talk” therapy session. The primary objective of Equine Assisted Therapy at Helping Hands Therapeutic Riding Center is rehabilitation, but it is also there to provide mental, physical, and social stimulation. The children love coming out to ride. It is amazing seeing an unresponsive child get on a horse and 45 minutes later have a totally different personality. Some of the children are more challenging to work with than others. Their attention spans can be short so keeping them focused and entertained can be difficult. One patient we had was a girl about age 12. While on the horse she would talk in song, in a soft tone. She loved being on the horse. When the therapist would tell her left and right she would start to respond and move the reigns. Every child has their own personalities and their own needs. Each child is matched with a horse depending on those needs. This takes great patience for all the participants. Safety is essential. That is why I am there. I volunteer to walk next to the horse, to control the horse, and to monitor the rider through the lesson. The therapist...

...Associate Level Material Appendix D Acre Woods Retirement Community Case Study Acre Woods is a private retirement community with 275 senior residents. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of its residents through physical and emotional care. Sarah Armstrong, Acre Woods’ resident physical therapist, manages the retirement community’s activity program. Recently, Acre Woods added a pool to its rehabilitation center to facilitate resident exercise and aquatic therapy. The residents’ monthly rent was raised to help finance the pool. After the pool was constructed, Sarah immediately contacted the director of Acre Woods, Mark Adams, with concerns that the pool did not meet some important specifications included in the original design, such as nonslip treads on the stairs and improved wheelchair access to the pool area. Mark advised Sarah that the residents would be happy to have a pool, even if it did not incorporate all the requested special features. When Sarah asked why the new ramp and stair treads were not provided even though they were included in the budget, the director remarked that Sarah’s job was to provide physical therapy, not to worry about the budget. Over the next month, four Acre Woods residents had minor falls using the pool stairs. While the accidents were not serious, other residents began to express fears about using the pool. Sarah contacted Mark again to relate resident complaints and to stress the need for pool accessibility and safety improvements...
