Place I Feel Most Comfortable

The place where I feel most perfectly content would have to be the gym. Going to the gym and exercising is the best decision I’ve made in my life. I started 3 years ago as a kid with horrible self-esteem and zero self-confidence. I would walk with my head down and never give myself any credit for anything I did. Three years later of hard work and dedication in the gym has made me a completely different person. It has given me so much more self-confidence and a different look on life. I was very intrigued by fitness from the start. I would come home and read articles online about how to better myself in the gym for countless hours on end. I became knowledgeable about exercise and nutrition very quickly and would constantly be approached by complete strangers in the gym with questions regarding these topics. I was astonished that I went from a kid that was extremely ignorant of anything to do with exercise or nutrition to someone that others trusted asking their fitness questions to. This is when I realized my importance to others while in the gym was much higher than it was anywhere else. While in the gym I was somebody others looked up to and not just someone who was over looked like I was used to. I feel joy and excitement when others tell me they want to look like myself or ask me what my exercise regimen is like. Helping people reach their fitness goals and establishing friendships with them along the way is what I love to do. Watching them experience changes in their body and how their confidence significantly grows is truly a feeling un- comparable to anything I’ve ever felt. I don’t see myself ever stop going to the gym since it has become my biggest passion in life. I hope I will be enrolled in the University of Delaware Exercise Science program so I can make a living out of what I love to do and change others’ lives along the way.

Definition Essay: What Does Home Really Mean?

...What Does Home Really Mean? According to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “there is no place like home,” but what does home mean? According to Oxford mini Dictionary and Thesaurus, home is “the place where you live.” However, to me, home is anywhere one feels the most comfortable, and is surrounded by the people he or she loves. Susan Clayton, Tony Chapman, and Mindy Koeing have different views of what home means to them; however, Mindy Koenig’s view is the closest to mine. Your home can say a lot about you as a person. Clayton says, “for many people their home is part of their self-definition, which is why we do things like decorate our houses and take care of our lawns” (“The Psychology of Home: Why Where You Live Means so Much”). It is not always noticeable, but we do compare what people’s houses look like to the kind of person he or she is. Clayton also mentioned, “We may use our own homes to distinguish ourselves” (“The Psychology of Home: Why Where You Live Means so Much”). This shows how much pride people put into their home and what it really means to them. Commonly most people associate their home with their happy place, therefore they want their house to be as presentable as possible....

Public Space Research Paper

...When it comes to public spaces, there are certain places that make you feel a lot more secure and comfortable than others. With this in mind, the place I feel the safest and most comfortable at it is my home, due to the fact that once I get home, I can just unwind do what I have to do and enjoy every second of it. What makes me feel so sheltered and snug is not the fact that I have a roof over my head, but it is the fact that my family is present in the same place as I am even if we are not at home. To illustrate, one day my family and I went camping and of course I was scared because I was young and it was going to be my first camping, even though it was a whole new area to me my family made it feel like a home because we did everything as...

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1. Background of Study According to Dewan Film Indonesia (1994:7) the first Cinema in Indonesia was built in December 1900, the first class ticket was 2 Gulden (silver) and the second class was 2.5 Gulden. Another rules in ticketing was by dividing the price into 3 classes. The third class, known as “goat class” was the cheapest. Started at Gambir open field (now, Monas), the building was a warehouse with a wall from gedek (plaited bamboo skin) and iron roof. Named as Talbot (taken from the owner’s name), it moved from one city to another when the movie season ended There was another Cinema known as De Callone (name of the owner) in Deca Park. Known as “misbar (gerimis bubar)”, an open Cinema, De Callone was a starter of Capitol Cinema in Pintu Air. Back then, the movie showing was silent. Sometimes, they put music together with the movie but it didn’t match. Decade 1950’s was the golden period of Cinema business. The competitors of Cinema were drama, human Wayang, Ketoprak, etc, which technically was below the standardization of cinematography technology. Compared to the organized cost of drama and the rest, Cinema cost was cheaper because it only repeated the movies again and again (Haris, 1992:19). In 1951, Metropole Cinema was built in Jakarta. It was supported with 1.700 seats capacity, had vacuum and blower ventilation, 3 floor building, dance floor, and swimming pool. Competition got higher...

Special Place

...Alex Keith My Special Place Transitioning from high school to college is a lot of work and it takes a lot of focus to succeed. To be successful I think you need somewhere to relax and to study and just do whatever you want to do. This place is my special place, my dorm room. My dorm room is an amazing place where amazing things happen, day in and day out. My dorm is set up exactly like my real room at home, which is also why I’m so comfortable in it. Every time I walk into my dorm room I feel like I’m at home in Columbia, and that really calms me down and sort of makes me feel like my parents are close to me in a way. Being comfortable in my room is why I can study so well in it, because I usually cant study or do work anywhere. My room is also the best place to triage for me. There’s nothing better to me then lying in bed watching Netflix while I try to prioritize what homework I should do at that moment. I could do it all day, and I wish I really could. After I’m done triaging, I simply just lie in my bed and think. Thinking in my room is great because I don’t have to do anything. My mind floats and bounces off the pictures and posters on my walls, I think about the most interesting things when I’m alone in that room. My room has been the most important place to me at the U for the first 4 months that I’ve been here, and I hope it’s always the most important place to me while I’m at the U. My room has made my college experience great, because of all the great things...

Communications Personal Space

...our conversations that we have with one another. For this assignment I chose to work with my roommate, Yale Mendelson, to test out the different lengths of distance between each other to carry out a conversation. The three different distances that I chose was down the hall from each other (approximately 8 feet), face to face (approximately 1.5 feet), and face to face with less than a half of foot between our faces. All three of these distances brought about different reactions between the two of us and showed differences in conversation at each distance. The first distance was the furthest, we began our conversation, I had to speak very loudly, almost a yell, to begin our interaction. I could tell right away that Yale was uncomfortable with this because he is not very outgoing and we were bringing some attention to ourselves. The hall way was not empty so as we were talking back and forth to each other I noticed that we both had to use hand gestures and certain body language cues to help the other realize what they were saying. This setting was definitely difficult for us to have a normal, personal conversation. This distance left for a very broad interaction that was not able to ever become very personal. The next distance that we used to interact with each other was the face to face at about 1 to 2 feet apart. For this distance, I could tell right away that both of us were much more comfortable. Our interaction went on for much longer then the last one and we were...

The Importance Of Portrait Photography

...Reason being that I don't want to miss that perfect moment. But this doesn't mean that I always go flexible on the lights. Sometimes I do use studio lights or just create my own little studio. Either way, when it comes to lighting a subject, soft lighting tend to be more flattering and hard light tends to bring out flaws because of its harsh shadows that makes wrinkles and such pop. On that note - never, ever, photograph with a flash on top of your camera straight ahead without a second light source. Pop-up flashes are horrible and you will always benefit more from using natural light, reposition your subject, use a more light sensitive lens or just raise the ISO. Knowing light is a massive knowledge, but studying it will pay off since it's the building block of the photograph. For instance, I was going to shoot a cover for a CD single to an musician and I ended up photographing him on a bench, in a sauna, with two speedlites where one of them where strung up with a GorillaPod around a tube, pointing down. You can see the results here on my photography site or on this portrait photography link [http://www.mikaelcedergren.com/projects/ice-steel-cd-cover/]. It's kinda hard to believe...

Two Unique Mindsets of Being Alone

...“A Clean, Well- lighted Place”, Ernest Hemingway conveys the idea of loneliness and its corresponding effects. Characters from each text are alone in unique ways; Santiago is a elderly man who, although fishing alone, does not despair in his loneliness. In spite of the fact that he is in solitude, he does not mind being alone. Whereas the deaf man and the waiter attempt to find a way to avoid their loneliness by looking for a place to be so that they are not alone. While many elderly may be alone it does not necessarily mean they are lonely. In the novel The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is an old man who fishes alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream. He is a widow who has no family and does not have much. Santiago has only one human companion, but in his opinion the sea creatures are his friends. Santiago finds it easy to relate to the fish when he reflects on the fish’s choice of staying far away from everything, “His choice had been to stay in the deep dark water far out beyond all snares and traps and treacheries. My choice was to go there to find him beyond all people. Beyond all people in the world. Now we are joined together and have been since noon. And no one to help either one of us” (Hemingway 50). Santiago’s solitude extends to the fish; they are in isolation from the rest of the world, but together because of it. Santiago isolates himself on purpose, because he is comfortable with only the company of the sea creatures instead of people. He feels at ease being alone and...

Managing

...person must be honest, mature, and have a good attitude. I believe that leadership is one of the most important traits a manager can have. A manager must be a charismatic leader in the organization, and be able to help motivate the subordinates to work to their full potential. I believe that I follow these characteristics. I am a very honest person, and I like to do whatever I can to help my group succeed. When it comes to the work place I like to keep things mature and organized. There’s a time and a place to have fun and goof off, but the work place is not one. My attitude towards my fellow employees is very positive and upbeat. Whenever somebody needs anything I always like to be a helping hand, and I always have a great attitude. A happy attitude is contagious; an unhappy manager makes for unhappy employees. I would more likely be a mediator in a situation of disagreement. Helping somebody resolve a conflict is sometimes better than just making the decision for him or her. I like to feel comfortable in the workplace, and reward my employees by offering rewards; such as a pay raise, promotion, or any other positive reinforcement. Providing feedback to our employees is very important in my opinion. When somebody is doing a good job, they should be told and possibly rewarded. Feedback is often not used in the workplace but can help employees see what their strengths and weaknesses are. I would be a good manager because I know what it’s like to have a bad manager. The manager...

Stepping Out from Comfort Zone

...formed unconsciously8 Risk avoidance due to fear of failure9 Development plan12 Mentally prepared and force to step out12 Proactively step out in new environment12 References13 1. 2. Introduction: Motivation of this paper “Comfort zone” was the first word that came into my mind when I was thinking about the topic of my paper, because I know I am the one who always want to stay in my comfort zones, which may impede my way to become a good leader or a successful person. So, I need to step out of my comfort zones on purpose once in a while, to improve my leadership skills and interpersonal skills. To finish this paper, first, I conducted a wide range of research on internet about “comfort zones” and “leadership”, finding that a lot of people shared the same feeling with me and there are plenty of articles in this specific area. I’ve learned a lot from the literature review stage, and knew more about how the “comfort zones” formed and its impacts. Then I reflected to some real life experiences of myself, further understood the reason why I would like to stay in my comfort zones and the importance to step out to become a good leader. After the reflection, I came up a plan of how to develop myself in leadership, with the very first step to get of my comfort zones consciously. 3. Literature review of “comfort zones” in leadership development 4.1 Definition of “comfort zones” According to Alasdair K. White, the “comfort zone” is defined as...

How Architecture Affects My Future Psychiatric Facility Setting

...a medical doctor. Many options open for someone in the field of psychiatry and therefore, they have many options for work settings. In my profession I will most likely spend some time working in a hospitals’ psychiatric ward. I may also work in a prison, a psychiatric hospital, or a combination of both. I could just choose to work as a typical Medical Doctor rather than choosing to work in psychology. I could do both if I chose and if it was required. But ultimately, the goal is to have my own psychiatric clinic to practice out of. The perfect setting for practicing psychiatry is obviously not a psych ward of a hospital or a prison. It is not a place that has all white walls, blue floors, fluorescent lights, barred windows, and strait jackets. It is not a building that is confusing, poorly built, poorly lit, offensive in any way, or just plain ugly. I believe a psychiatric facility should be built in a way that makes patients feel comfortable, at home, welcome, and in control. The best way to describe the perfect setting for a facility that guarantees an optimal psychiatric recovery would be to describe it using design criteria. First the building would have, “functional conformance,” meaning it would have the proper components to make the function [psychiatric practice] possible (Davey, V.). This would include comfortable chairs, in order to make...

Beauty Ideals

...pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction and that are aesthetically pleasing to the senses. While we are told as young children that beauty lies within, in today’s world for many people, that is regretfully untrue. We live in a very superficial society where most everyone is judged by their physical appearance. We are forced to change our values and purely focus on our appearance in order to be accepted and feel wanted. In recent years, the desire to be “beautiful” has become an obsession for many, leading sometimes to devastating consequences. The pressure to be beautiful relates to women’s studies and feminism because as supporters, we want females to love their bodies and feel comfortable in their own skin and not to feel like they have to conform to certain standards set by society. In other terms, we want them to feel comfortable just being themselves. In The New York Times’ article entitled “For the A-Cup Crowd, Minimal Assets Are a Plus,” writer Catherine Saint Louis discusses the issue of breast size. In current times, it is widely accepted that “bigger is better” and that to be sexually desirable and attractive, one must have large breasts (C cup or larger). She states that it is commonly assumed that small-breasted women feel that nature’s lottery has left them coming up short; however, over the past couple of years, this ideology is slowly beginning to transform. In the article, she interviews several owners of bra boutiques and discovers that many of their customers...
