Planet Money Episode 435: Why Buying A Car Is So Awful
This episode discusses why people think it is so awfully annoying to purchase a car. People, including myself, feel like they are getting screwed when purchasing a car. The older lady they speak to in the interview says that she thought the dealer and she have come up with deal, but then the dealer says he has to speak to his manager. When the dealer goes to speak to said manager they supposedly “argue” and shows that the dealer is “fighting” for your purchase. In this episode I found that a dealership can’t be closed by a manufacture without the agreement from a board, and since they can’t close then there is no reason for dealers to have great customer service, thus making buying a car terrible. There is also a law stating that no one can enter another market area of another manufacture selling the same make or model of that car.
I found myself wondering why car dealerships are little sketchy. I mean I now know that A LOT of money goes into the purchase of cars. Also I think it is very silly that you can’t buy a bunch of different cars from a bunch of different makers all in the same place, like a Best Buy. I now understand the laws but I don’t think it is fair at all. Also I was wondering why we have car purchasing websites. I feel like the internet is an infinite domain and you should be able to sell whatever and whenever if you want to. I think if you sell cars over the internet the sale of car would sky

Human Expansion Into Space

...hits, hostile extraterrestrial life, or other countless things that could bring an end to humans. Currently the entire population is on one planet, this means if one of these events come to pass humans could become extinct. With the threat of mass extinction imminent, the human race needs to expand past Earth and colonize other earth like planets in the Milky Way. With this expansion humanity is not just on one world and could survive after a disaster on earth. In order to expand scientists will have to solve three main problems: finding a planet suitable for colonization, the technology needed in this undertaking, and the political red tape. The first main problem in colonizing space is finding a suitable planet to colonize. According to (Villard, 2011) in “Hunting for Earthlike Planets,” there are several steps that scientists use to look for a planet with the possibility of supporting human life. The first and most important step is finding a planet within the goldilocks zone or habitable zone, this zone is the correct distance from a planet’s sun to allow liquid water on the surface. Once a planet is found in that zone, scientists then need to run a spectroscopic analysis on the atmosphere, this test uses light reflecting off the planet to see what gasses the atmosphere is composed of. This will show the scientists if the air on the planet is breathable to humans by...

Cassini-Huygens Research Paper

...Science has come a long way, especially in the field of astronomy. What early civilizations could only speculate, mankind can now know for certain thanks to modern advancements. Science has given precise measurements of unimaginable distances, images of objects billions of kilometers away, and detailed information about planets and moons humans have never visited. Astronomers use various methods to determine the composition and atmosphere of a planet. One method to determine the composition is sending probes or astronauts to the surface. Astronauts brought rocks from the moon, which were studied to determine that the moon's composition is similar to Earth's. A more recent mission to find information about extra-terrestrial bodies is the Cassini-Huygens...

Colonize Mars Persuasive Essay

...is the only planet where life can survive. That may have been a “fact” fifty years ago, but now, scientists are almost certain that we can colonize Mars. We should colonize Mars, because it is a backup plan for the Earth, it will help us achieve Universal civilization, and it is possible. We should colonize Mars, because it is a backup plan for the Earth. Humans are a growth oriented species. We grew from rocks to technology. Growth is an accomplishment, but did we ever look back and see what we did to the planet we live on? Today, we are suffering from our actions, with issues like global warming, war, and overpopulation. Sooner or later, an apocalypse will strike. When this happens, where will humans go? According to Elon Musk, the answer is Mars. He is most concerned with another world war stating “Last century, we had two massive world wars-...

Pros And Cons Of Colonizing Mars

...Introduction “Earth and Mars have a lot in common. They formed around the same time -- about 4.6 billion years ago -- and, as on Earth, a Martian day lasts about 24 hours (Ross, 2016, p.8). This is one of the many reasons why humans should colonize Mars. Humans should colonize Mars because it is the closest planet to Earth within the habitable zone, also with current technology it is the most feasible planet that is within reach of Earth. Colonizing Mars would help Earth with its problems with resources and space control for humans. Why Mars? The big question to colonizing another planet, is why Mars out of all of the other planets in our solar system? As Thompson (2012) stated, “Mars is more like Earth than any other place in the known universe”...

Drake Equation

...system, our galaxy, the whole universe? And if we are not alone, then why hasn’t an intelligent alien species revealed themselves to us (every human). Assuming that almost every possible life bearing planet has had at least a few billion years to evolve and progress technologically. Now, getting back to the question “are we alone?”, personally, I doubt that we are alone, and here’s why. The drake equation. The drake equation is an equation (obviously), that was created by a man named Frank Drake back in the 1960’s. And what this equation tries to solve is the amount of intelligent extra-terrestrial civilizations in the milky way galaxy (our home galaxy at the moment). More specifically, it “Identifies specific factors thought to play a role in the development of such civilizations. Although there is no unique solution to this equation, it is a generally accepted tool used by the scientific community to examine these factors.” --Frank Drake, 1961....

Drake Equation

...Ivan Petricevic Project: SETI Prof. Antonio Paris Does Life Exist Outside of our Universe? Are we alone? This question has been around ever since the beginning of human civilization and the idea of life outside of our planet ponders my mind often. The SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is one of the most high-tech radio telescopes that search for evidence of life outside our planet. The way SETI works is it tries to listen for any signal in our universe from another civilization outside our planet. Frank Drake who is the founder of SETI is well thought-out to be the pioneer of the scientific search for alien life. In 1961, Frank had developed an equation that estimates the number of alien civilizations which may be reached; known as the “Drake Equation”. During the beginning stages of SETI, one main problem...

Life on Kepler

...Life on Another Planet KEPLER-22b Created by: Clinton Wall Larry Boggs Sheila Campbell Kepler system is made up of many planets: approximately 69 of them. Many have the same structure as the Earth, such as, it has the capability to hold water like an ocean, and has an atmosphere some-what like the Earth. Kepler-22b is a planet roughly 600 light years away from earth and is approximately 2.4 earth’s size. It takes on the same similarities as the earth. It shows that is has clouds which offers us the distinction that is has an atmosphere with the capability of having oxygen to breath without the need of special equipment. Which could save us tremendous amounts of money to be able to use on other things. Just imagine being able to live on a planet other than earth without special equipment needed to sustain life; just being able to go outside, breathe clean air and enjoy life on the nicely landscaped and wonderful temperatures of Kepler-22b. The surface temperature of Kepler-22b is approximately 22C (72F) which would be comfortable for sustaining life on its planet. With its land mass and the capability to hold water, this would be a well-designed planet to live on. With the earth’s ozone layer slowly dissipating, the future of viable life here could be in jeopardy...

...piece, The Planets. When I was in seventh grade, my band played Jupiter, which is one of the movements in Holst’s The Planets suite. This is what really sparked my interest in Holst’s music. Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. His father was a professional musician. Gustav’s mother died in 1882, and his family moved to a different house. His aunt, Nina, came to help raise Gustav and his brother. Gustav learned to play the piano and violin from a young age, and took up trombone as well. His father thought that Gustav playing a brass instrument might help him with his asthma. In 1893, Holst applied for a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. He did not get it, but was accepted as a non scholarship student. He however received a scholarship in 1895, which helped him quite a bit financially. Holst played trombone professionally during his time at RCM to help support himself....
