...well. Rape seems to be more main stream than some might think. Society more often than not are blaming the victims, the proof is in a recent 12-minute video of young men in Steubenville, Ohio, joking about the brutal, extended gang rape of a 16-year-old girl. According to one study of 16,000 Americans, 17.6% of women report having been victims of rape or attempted rape at some time in their lives even suffering multiple rapes in their lives: the average number of rapes per woman during that time period was 2.9. Finally Rape Myths seem to overpower the perception that rape is not okay and not natural, also making it okay to blame the victim and making the rapist seem to have never had a choice in their actions. ...are on a high. Incidents of molestation, rape and murder are quite frequent – the recent being the incident of rape outside a nightclub in Gurgaon. Haryana Police has directed all nightclub owners and other commercial enterprises not to allot work shift to women after 8 o'clock in the night. This stance of police has come under a lot of flak from different quarters. “A woman who worked at a Gurgaon pub was gang-raped” “21-year-old Radhika Tanwar was shot dead by a suspected stalker in New Delhi” “23-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gang-raped in a moving car by a neighbour and his friends in Noida” These are some instances showing crime rate against women in National Capital Region. The Delhi-NCR region has thrown up numerous such instances of police apathy in rape cases. When asked to explain the rising instances of rape, the cops have invariably blamed the women, an array of extraneous factors or resorted to specious arguments instead of looking inwards and focusing on police reforms. The most disturbing aspect of this is the rank misogyny that underlies it. Crime against National Capital Region is alarming. Usually every day a single case of rape is reported in every city area of India. So it is wrong to say NCR alone. But The National Capital Region has become a hub for rapes and sexual assaults. In 2010, as many as 414 rape cases were reported in Delhi, the highest among 35 major cities in...

...Introduction As a result of our research on sexual violence, its prevalence, and its impact on our society were able to identify a service gap within our local communities. A core nonprofit agency, ContactLifeline, Inc. specifically targets people affected by sexual violence and crisis. We interviewed people in the community, local educators, students, and key staff from ContactLifeline Inc. to gather professional opinions and opinions of our fellow community members and educators to see how these service gaps may have affected them or may not have. We discovered that ContactLifeline is a nonprofit agency that provides specific services to sexual assault and rape survivors for the entire state of Delaware. ContactLifeline offers many options for survivors to receive multiple kinds of aftercare services, free of charge, but we noticed that their efforts in prevention were not being met on a full scale by our school system in an effective long term manner. We asked what is being done by our local schools to provide and promote education on this specific topic. What is being done to educate our youth on what healthy relationships and sexual behaviors are so that most importantly we see a decrease in victims and are not spending so much time and money on aftercare? This needs assessment addresses this service gap in depth and provides a possible policy change within our local school districts and potentially a state wide adaption of a sexual education program that includes a curriculum...

...years South Africa has been considered the rape capital of the world, some analysis’s tend to blame this scourge on our countries history of apartheid and violence. Over the years the precise definition of rape has varied and thus there is no single agreed definition of rape. In 2012, the FBI changed their definition from "The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will." to "The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object or by oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim." The new South African law around rape came into effect in December 2007. This law is called the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act, No. 32 of 2007 and considers that males too can be victims of rape. Rape is an act of Sexual Penetration of a victim, without their consent. Rape occurs when * Someone inserts their genital organs into the mouth, anus or genital organs of a victim * Any part of someone’s body, such as a finger, goes into the anus or genital organs of the victim * Any object, like a stick or a bottle is put into the anus or genital organs of the victim * The genital organs of an animal are put into the mouth of the victims Personally I believe that one can never be entirely safe from rape because anyone has the capacity to rape which means we all are possible victims, but why one might ask . In this assignment I will be looking at the myths that create a sense...

...in disbelief, saddened but relieved that the violence and the sexual assaults are somewhere else. These tragedies are not in "my neighborhood, not in my town”(Domestic violence hurts communities, families, 2017). Even when tragic events occur in our country, we are thankful that we were not directly affected. Being aware of domestic violence in our own towns and communities is even more important. The article explains, “Gun violence, threats, rape and sex assault as weapons to control women and men and children are in every neighborhood. Domestic violence goes on behind closed doors as crimes that include rape of a partner, physical and sexual abuse of children, and violence by one family member against another. Violence can escalate without anyone outside the family knowing it exists”(Domestic violence hurts communities, families, 2017). Even if we don’t hear or know about any issues concerning violence in our local community, it occurs everywhere. Instead of pretending as if these events don’t take place because we have no direct involvement, everyone needs to increase their awareness and be socially active(Domestic violence hurts communities, families,...

...One of the biggest problems on campus at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the number of sexual offenders that live around the area and their proximity to campus. Sexual offender is someone who has been convicted of a sex crime. Crimes that are considered sex crime include but not limit: rape, sexual assault, child pornography, child molestation, and prostitution. The recidivism of sexual offenders is on average about 14% within the five years after the first time they commit a sex crime (Tillman). Recidivism is when a person repeats the same behavior after they have had negative consequences due to that behavior. Couple of days ago I received an e-mail that was titled “Assistance in Locating Registered Sex Offender”, which was followed by the description of this person, and what to do in case you see him. Also the e-mail contained a bunch of links that informed you what to do in case you were sexually assaulted and how to prevent it from happening. Right after reading the whole e-mail I got chills going down my spine, because it never really crossed my mind that I could be unsafe on campus of my own school. After receiving this e-mail I decided to investigate this issue a little further, but I wasn’t expecting what I discovered. According to crimereports.com there are around 20 registered sex offenders living around campus one mile or less (Crime Reports). The reason this is a problem is obvious, of course; safety is the main concern. Having your own baseball...

...There are many organization that have been established with the primary goals of ending rape and sexual assault crimes, educating the public of the crimes and changing and improving current policies that can establish better protection for victims and their families. Many of the crisis centers have history of their beginning and it has evolved to what many organizations do now. According to Sniffen (2009), the history of the rape crisis movement in the United States is also a history of the struggle of African American women against racism and sexism. The first women to break the silence around rape were those African American women who testified before Congress following the Memphis Riot of May 1866, where black women were gang raped by a white mob. In the 1980s, was the beginnings of anti-rape education spreading into universities and an increase in feminist academic research around the issue of rape. Sniffen continues by illustrating that heated debates centered on a...

...Aliraza Javaid1 Abstract This research explores the phenomenon of male rape and how the police recognise it, together with uncovering male rape myths in a local police force. Whilst male rape research is expanding, it was found that the police have a lack of knowledge, understanding, awareness, and specialised training of male rape. Therefore, police officers’ attitudes, ideas, views, perspectives, and beliefs on specific topics pertinent to male rape are discussed. This project also seeks to comprehend gender expectations and stereotypes of men, so as to comprehend the prevalence of male rape, the negligence of male rape, and the under-reporting/recording of male rape. Moreover, because male rape is a part of sexual violence, feminist theory is used as a foundation for this project, since feminism seeks gender equality. Ultimately, this research emphasises the need for the police to adequately manage male rape victims and take male rape seriously, without any negative attitudes, ideas, views, perspectives, and beliefs. 1 MRes Social Sciences www.internetjournalofcriminology.com 1 Internet Journal of Criminology © 2014 ISSN 2045 6743 (Online) Contents Page 1.0 Introduction............................................................................................................3 2.0 Male Rape Victims in the Criminal Justice System...............................................4 3.0 The Police and Policing Male Rape...............................................................

...recently has become the burning issue for the country because of its adverse effects on women, especially to the teenage girls. Eve teasing has remained a concern since many years. But the fact that it has taken a massive shape is of great concern. The practice of eve-teasing is a form of sexual assault that ranges in brutality from catcalls, sexually evocative remarks, brushing in public places, to outright groping and very recently teasing by mobile phone and mobile tracking. It is an obvious fact that no conscious citizen of our country is unaware about this ugly situation created by the youth who follow criminal behavior. Suicide of a probable school or college girl as an outcome of eve-teasing is an obvious news whenever we scroll down the daily newspapers. Eve-teasing has no bounds. Every other person on the streets intend to assault women ranging from rich to poor, being literate to being uneducated. It is very sad that, a healthy number of educated boys from reputed families are growing hanker after towards this practice. According to the report from ‘Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association’ (BNWLA) the probable eve-teasers on the streets of Bangladesh are teenage boys, traffic police, rickshaw pullers, bus drivers, supervisors or colleagues of the working women. Statistics suggests 32% of the eve teasers are students, 33% are middle-aged men while 35% are anti-socials. A common scenario of defining how women are sexually harassed would be the fact that these teasers...

...Rape culture, hysteria, epidemic, or whatever the currently preferred terminology be, is a feminis t myth that refuses to extinguish itself. The effect of social awareness of rape and general sensitivity in our culture has shifted our society into an anti-male, anti-free speech, and anti-American entity. In modern day, alternately “third wave” feminism, members propose a concept of “a rape culture”, suggesting that sexual assault is celebrated and a cultural norm in this society. “Third wave feminism” doesn’t have an exact definition, but can be best described as modern day feminists that believe women are being oppressed in the western world by a patriarchy. These misandristic groups blame men for rape with little evidence to support their...

...FMR 27 messages by promoting awareness of SGBV and the availability of PEP among its own national staff, patients and other local organisations. Where rape victims seek care outside conventional health structures, with midwives or traditional birth attendants (TBAs), MSF is starting to liaise more closely with them. TBAs can tell victims about the availability of PEP and refer SGBV cases to MSF health structures. In Sudan, MSF is considering employing qualified TBAs as community health workers, both to better reach out to rape victims and to encourage TBAs to liaise with MSF facilities without fear of losing income from their own patients. comprehensive approach – providing medical care within a framework including IEC, psychosocial support, legal assistance and liaison with other women’s organisations who can provide continued material and social support. In contexts without acute problems of violence, MSF employs a horizontal approach. SGBV is part of all our healthcare programmes globally – over 35 projects worldwide. The challenge for horizontal programmes is that SGBV becomes just one issue of many faced by medical staff in their hectic day’s work. The impact of stigmatisation makes it all the more difficult for SGBV to be handled in a general medical structure. One way that MSF counters this problem is by establishing ‘safe spaces’ in every health structure, where women can speak about their health questions and about SGBV with the assurance of full privacy and confidentiality...
