Modern Latin America

Mr. President? The responsibility of the American President is endless. Their decisions can change certainly not only their nation but also that of the entire world. The United
States being an international powerhouse, its policies will have a shockwave effects throughout the rest of the World. I am the President of the United States. The choices I make cannot be taken lightly and I will do everything in my power to ensure I make the best decision possible. I am surrounded by very intelligent and experienced people that will keep me updated on events and help me in making these choices, it is up to me in which case our great nation will take and in doing so will have to live with the selection and not turn back and regret it. Any show of weakness or a flip flop trait will show a sign of weakness and indecision. So I am faced with a challenge and the lives of 200 American lives are now in my hands.

An ambassador of a Latin American country with dictatorship control has informed me of a coup and the taking of its capital city. There are 200 Americans who’s lives are in danger if action is not taken soon. This country is a member of the
OAS so I may resort to their opinion on the matter at a later time and could possibly ask for military or diplomatic assistance as well. The ambassador suggests a military intervention to evacuate the Americans and intervene in the rebellion. I would first get information on how many rebel forces we stand against, who is leading the rebellion, and if diplomatic action can be taken first in order to quench the rebellion. It is vital to know who and how many we are fighting before we take any action. If there is an overwhelming amount of rebels (which appears to be the case seeing as they have taken over the capital) our first objective is to save the

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

...The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, founded in autumn 1848, was an original artistic response to the revolutionary outbursts of the time in continental Europe. The mysterious letters “P.R.B.” features on the paintings of the young and completely unknown artists caused a stir in the English society. This group was comprised of London’s Academy students including John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and William Holman Hunt, each of whom was eager to change not only the principles of modern art but also the role it played in society. Combining scientific precision, an innovative approach to subject matter, and brilliant, clear colors, Pre-Raphaelitism was Britain's first avant-garde art movement. The members of the Brotherhood were well aware of their place in the culture with non-existent traditions of religious art, which had been obliterated in the 16th century during the Reformation. The Pre-Raphaelites were faced with an uneasy task – to revive religious art without employing the canonical imagery of altar paintings. Unlike the Renaissance masters, “P.R.B.” based their compositions not on imagination but on observations from everyday life. While the Pre-Raphaelites approached the Bible as a source of human drama and searches for literary and poetic meaning, they also addressed provocative narratives of modern life that employed religious iconography. Their compositions, focused on social issues and daily activities, often grew into parables, demonstrating how the didactic...

Pre-Socratic Philosophers

...Pre-Socratic Philosophers I believe many of the pre-Socratic philosophers had some interesting ideas about how life has come to be. The philosopher that I found the most compelling was the Atomist. The Atomist believed that all things were composed of atoms which are tiny, microscopic, and unbreakable and are composed of the same matter but different sizes, shapes and weight (Moore & Bruder, 2008). The Atomist thought that the atoms movements were pre-determined and physical was the reason why. They believed that the fate of an atom was already planned and would not change based on its experiences. Compelling Ideas What I found to be the most compelling was that in an age before science started progressing and with no telescopes, the Atomist believed in something that was yet to be discovered. They had the right area of thought in mind and later through science atoms were discovered. The thing that interests me the most is that the Atomist almost hit it spot on. However, I do not believe that an atoms motion has been pre-determined, rather I believe that they move freely based on change and influence. An example would be if atoms make up an animal then when that animal evolves and changes throughout the years then its movements are not pre-determined. The atoms that make up the animal would be constantly changing meaning that their “fate” would also change. The movement would have to be free forming. The Atomist had some great ideas and some were proven right by science...

Pre-Socratics vs Sophists

...Sayre (2011) tells us that one of the questions that the Pre-Socratic philosophers asked was “What lies behind the world of appearance?” This question While Sayre (2011) tells us that the Pre-Socratics “were scientists who investigated the nature of things”. This question goes beyond the physical world and what might be in the next. Being that I was raised in a home where it was all about religion I always believed that there was a “heaven” with streets made of gold, beautiful oceans of crystal blue, and angels flying around singing. As I got older I was one of those people that didn’t just believe something because I was told to. I don’t think that a question like this can be “fixed” in place for most people and I know that it wasn’t in me. So at this point in my life even though I do believe that there is an “after-life” I don’t believe that there is the “heaven” and “hell” that I was raised to believe in. I have concluded that not everyone is going to have the same answers to questions such as these but that doesn’t make one person right and one person wrong. Maybe in the end since I believe that there is something that comes after this life that I will go somewhere that is my “heaven” or “hell” and that someone that doesn’t believe will just “stop” being. I have no “proof” to answer this question but I don’t think anyone does which is why most people that ask this question go off of something called belief or faith. As stated above I am answering this question off of how I...

...Presentation Essentials October 15,2012 The Rhetorical Triangle is made up of three elements they are the speaker, audience and situation. I have watched two videos of presentations, which I will explain how they fit into the parts of the Rhetorical Triangle. The first video is Ellen Degeneres delivering a commencement speech to Tulane University’s class of 2009. Naturally the speaker in this video was Ellen Degeneres who is a well known actress and comedian. She of course started her speech off with jokes and kept it light hearted and jovial. This didn’t really show much direction in which she was trying to go with the speech, but as it went on she got more to the point as she delivered her intended goal. I feel that she did a fantastic job reaching her intended audience; they were focused on what she had to say during her entire speech. Ellen was able to combine funny with serious and even able to tie in some experiences that college students would have during their years at the university. She made sure to cover her experiences that got her and her career to where it is now. The situation of her speech was to deliver one at a commencement ceremony. The definition of commencement is a ceremony at which academic degrees or diplomas are conferred. (Commencement,2012) Even though Ellen did not attend Tulane University, but was a resident of Louisiana so the university had her deliver the speech. Its purpose was help the graduates look at someone’s path to their success...

Urinalysis

...antenatal care providers will continue to perform dipstick urinalysis at each and every appointment, whereas other providers will only perform one at every appointment if the patient presents with Gestational diabetes with oral glucose screening, Pre-eclampsia with blood pressure and Asymptomatic bacteriuria [urine infection with no symptoms] with a culture at the first visit (IHS.gov 2005). According to an article in the Journal of Family practice by William A. Alto, Screening for gestational diabetes using urine dipsticks for glycosuria is ineffective with low sensitivities. False-positive tests outnumber true positives 11:1. A 50-g oral glucose challenge is a better test. Tests for glycosuria after this blood test are not useful. Proteinuria determined by dipstick in pregnancy is common and a poor predictor for preeclampsia with a positive predictive value between 2% and 11%. If the blood pressure is elevated, a more sensitive test should be used. After urinalysis at the first prenatal visit, routine urine dipstick screening should be stopped in low-risk women. Urinalysis can be a quick and reliable indicator for some conditions such as UTI, dehydration and malnourishment (ketonuria). However in the case of gestational diabetes and pre eclampsia,...

...objective. Risk identification includes determining which may adversely affect the project objective and what the impact of each risk might be if it occurs. (Gido/Clements, Pg. 285) I have created a risk matrix that identifies the potential risk that can place a burden on the project scope, schedule and budget. My main concern and identification is the recruitment and training of new employees. We have been provided with 6 weeks to train new employees, some individuals come with experience and several will be new to the plastic container industry. New recruits will require additional time to learn all of the functions of daily operations. If they are not trained in time, this will put a burden on the creation of the production plan. The pre-production plan can be used as a training activity to ensure that they will be able to assist in the production plan. Solution: Apply a headhunter to scan resumes for candidates with required experience and qualifications. Request additional training time for new employees; propose 9 weeks for individuals with no industry experience. If the board and budget allows, provide paid training to those individuals who are willing and able to start early. The second identification that is of major concern is the procurement of building site, acquiring permits and approvals on time. The fact that all approvals must come from outside agencies, all documents should be submitted early. Solution: I would suggest sending documentation 4 weeks prior...

Motivational Speaking

...peers glanced at him with the up most respect sent a trigger alerting me to the significance of him. Although he sat patiently through his detailed introduction, his eyes focused around the room, seemingly categorizing each student into a database, well organized through years of practice. Light applause trailed him as he took a firm stance in the front of the ballroom. Deceptively, he began with generalized questions about how people perceive each other, trivial knowledge that determined little, other than the common sense of his audience. After a series of varyingly mediocre topics, Mr. Taylor quieted down and pondered to himself for a second, gaining his thoughts and deciding how best to approach the next topic, “How many of you are pre-med students?” he asked inquisitively. I was one of many of the proud students who raised their hands. Nodding in acceptance, he continued with a sinister grin, “A show of hands, how many of your parents are doctors?” He searched the room for one proud hand, yet, none could be seen. With mock surprise, he indulged the curious crowd as to the direction of his questions. “I just left USM a few honors ago, delivering a speech to students with much the same career path as all of you. But somehow, when I asked if...

Pre-Diabetes

...Deborah Landowski July 12, 2012 Cheryl Matheis Objective Research Essay Pre-diabetes Are you very hungry? Are you very thirsty? Are you tired or don’t get enough sleep? Are you overweight or lack daily exercise? These are just a few symptoms you may experience if your body is trying to tell you something. You need to know what your body is saying and more importantly listen to it. Unfortunately, our body does not always tell us what we need to know; pre-diabetes is most often a silent condition with no symptoms. Pre-diabetes is when your blood sugar level is between 100 and 125 milligram per deciliter. A simple blood test can tell if you have pre-diabetes and detect if you are at risk of developing the lifelong disease of type 2 diabetes. According to health professionals at revolution health, the process begins when the pancreas can’t make enough insulin and/or when the body’s tissues can’t use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body’s cells use sugar “glucose” for energy. It also helps the body store extra sugar in muscle, fat, and liver cells (Rea, 2008). Most people with pre-diabetes do not have any symptoms but if diagnosed; can delay and in most instances can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a warning sign that you are at risk for getting type 2 diabetes, meaning that your blood sugar is higher than it should be...

...A Brief History of Philippine Literature in English I. Pre-Colonial Period - Consisted of early Filipino literature passed down orally; oral pieces have a communal authorship – it was difficult to trace the original author of the piece since oral literature did not focus on ownership or copyright, rather on the act of storytelling itself; - Many oral pieces became lost in the wave of the new literary influence brought about by the Spanish colonization; however, according to the Philippine Literature: A History & Anthology, English Edition (Lumbera, B. & Lumbera C.), the pre-colonial period of Philippine literature is considered the longest in the country’s history; - Literature in this period is based on tradition, reflecting daily life activities such as housework, farming, fishing, hunting, and taking care of the children as well; - Oral pieces told stories which explained heroes and their adventures; they attempted to explain certain natural phenomena, and, at the same time, served as entertainment purposes; - Pre-colonial literature showed certain elements that linked the Filipino culture to other Southeast Asian countries (e.g. oral pieces which were performed through a tribal dance have certain similarities to the Malay dance); - This period in Philippine literature history represented the ethos of the people before the arrival of a huge cultural influence – literature as a cultural...

The Impact Of Popular Culture In The Politics Of India

...Movies today are probably the most dominant industry that contributes in the production of popular culture today. What movies show depict what society is like and in turn as well decide what society would be like. Although movies are not particularly a medium meant to impart knowledge or awareness only, however it does do it and when it does it has the most impact compared to any other medium, to say for example books or news. We as mere human beings living our lives isolated by the rest of the world in our own little homes, towns and countries have a fairly little idea of what the world is like outside of our homes. All the knowledge that we have of the world around us is through books, movies, news, TV shows, etc. And among all these forms, movies hold a prominent position in developing the psyche of the common masses. To provide an example, the issue of Kashmir has always been a controversial issue in the politics of India. And though the common man hardly knows something about the actual socio-economic-political situation of that geographical region, that does not mean they don’t have an opinion about it! There is a common sense that is propagated in society about the whole situation. So, if you go around asking a random guy on the street, what does he think about the whole Kashmir issue, you are very likely to get an answer, “Kashmir hamara hai, hamare paas rahega”. He might as well add the (in)famous dialogue from the movie Gadar, another example of the influence of movies...

American Gangster

...Shannel Henry Dr. Brennan HUMN 1002 4/15/2014 Baby Face In the 1930s the United States was experiencing a depression era. This era known as ,The Great Depression, had a great effect on the movie industry. Films began to focus on sex, violence, infidelity, and promiscuous ways to target new audiences, mainly the males. The other types of genres like horror, gangster, and musical were still high in Demand during this era also. Social realism came about, which is a style of art that focuses on the ugly realities of the modern life and sympathizes with the working class people, especially the poor. The movies that were being produce during this time was to interest the men, which cause the movie producers to give women the lead roles and takeover the movie screen. A movie example is the film Baby Face. Baby Face, a movie directed by Alfred E. Green shows how women took over the ‘Big Screen’. This movie is based on Lily powers, who is played by Barbara Stanwyck, and how she moves up through her social class and financial status. She uses her beauty and her intelligence to get what she wanted from the men that she came into contact with. An example of her getting her way is at the end of the movie, when she wants the bank to fund her 15,000 to have a fresh start, but instead they gave her a new position at a firm in Paris. This is basically her getting her way because she has her new start from the scandal. Social realism is portrayed because every man that she met...

Pre Med

...It was around Christmas when my dad asked me to run an errand with him because his car had broken down. We got in the car and I drove normally. I was about to cross an intersection when the light turned yellow and was about to turn red, my dad told me to hit the break but my adolescent mind did exactly the opposite. I thought I had enough time to make it across, turns out I didn’t. I don’t remember much after that, everything happened so fast it all just seems like a really wicked dream. I woke up about 7 hours later in a hospital with my mother by my side crying her eyes out. I guess I was still heavily sedated that I couldn’t really move anything more than my eyelids. I wanted to move but my body was unresponsive. I just closed my eyes and went back to sleep. I awoke a day later and my mother told me my father had suffered serious injuries and was in intensive care and he might not make it. I could not help but feel responsible for what my dad was going through. If he died I would have to live with the memory that my irresponsible actions were the cause of his dead, I would forever be haunted with the fact that I killed my own father. We all have defining moments in our life, moments that change our future and redefine our past. It’s actually kind of sad that most of those moments have to hurt us or impact us in a negative manner. I guess it’s just human nature to wait until we get hurt to learn our lesson. I felt helpless as I could not do anything to aid my father...

Pre-Gaming

...the article to try and make me feel that the higher drinking age is to blame for “pre-gaming” and the reason so many students either die or end up in the hospital while in college. The topic of the article is about college students “pre-gaming” for social events by consuming large amounts of alcohol beforehand. The author’s point of view is that with a younger drinking age a lot of “pre-gaming” behavior could be avoided. * Consider your own experience Growing up in a college town being River Falls, WI. I grew up two blocks from the UWRF campus. Around the time I turned eighteen I started getting invited to a lot of college party’s and frat parties and so on. I can relate to the binge drinking aspect. We all had to try and get ourselves good and buzzed up, before we went out for the night. Having the drinking age being 21 in my eyes sets the stage for a lot of young adults to have to “pregame” before going out. When young adults are away at college, sometimes it’s there first time away from home, there are going to want to drink and experience the “college” life. When you tell young adults that they can now vote, and that they can make all their own decisions and even go away to war and potentially die for their country, but they can have a beer. They will find a way to drink. To me that’s like adding fuel to the fire, and in return you give people no choice but to rebel, hence you get ‘pre-gaming” behavior. In my eyes if a person who is eighteen years of age and is old...
