The principles of speech and public speaking were drawn from the experience and practices of the ancient Greece and besides a few cultural and societal modifications the principles have virtually stayed intact. The definition of public speaking is defined as speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners (Public Speaking, 2007). In the video entitled “Brilliant Public Speaking” it has touched on points that have tied into the reading for this week on many different levels. One such lesson that stands out is the lesson on persuasion and although you may not consider a public speaker to be one who is persuasive it does indeed apply. The purpose of this report is to find and understand ways to deal with public speaking anxieties as it is a common fear among the general population. This report focuses on defining glossophobia, or more commonly referred to as public speaking anxiety (PSA), and elaborating on strategies/tips for overcoming this phobia. Seinfeld had a joke about this stat, he said apparently if people are at a funeral they would rather be in the coffin than be giving the eulogy. We used the questionnaire Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) developed by McCroskey (1970; 1992) in order to determine the level of anxiety that a student experiences while holding a speech. At the beginning of the semester, the students were asked to fill out the questionnaire by approximating the level of distress that they experience while holding a public presentation. After the teaching of affective strategies at the end of the semester, the students were given the same questionnaire, with the above described instructions. The results of the study indicate that the students experienced significantly less anxiety after they had been taught how to manage their distress, by means of affective strategies.
