1. Prepare opening comments that give the class an overview of project management.
To understand what project management is we must first define what a project is. A project is a structured coordinated series of event, which result in a final deliverable. The deliverable in questions can be service oriented or produce a product to be delivered. A defined project will typically have a predetermined start and end date for the tasks within the project and the project itself. Additionally a project will normally be established to complete one goal that multiple tasks associated with it. A project does not have size limitations when it comes to resources, building a playground or building a skyscraper are both considered projects. The limitation of the project is associated with the limitation of the project triangle, cost, scope and time.
The actions of managing the previously referenced cost, scope and money are where our overview of project management is provided. Project Management is the framework and process that is followed to meet the overall objectives through the tasks associated with the deliverables. Through the process of Project Management the resources needed to complete the objective is managed through the concept of the project triangle of cost, scope and time. The success of the project is contingent on the how well the project manager manages and balances the project triangle.
All project contain the same framework to be completed by the project manager and the project team, which is planning, scheduling, monitoring and reporting. By properly managing and executing using this framework the project manager will have a clearly defined objective and a distinct management process. Project Management is made up of a team of executing subject matter experts within the field being managed. A typical project team will include the Project Manager,
