...Introduction Health begins in the context of our everyday lives, including in the places we live, eat, work and play. Health is not just about the absence of disease, but also the physical, mental and social wellbeing (Scully, 2004). Many factors are involved to influence the health of communities, such as social, cultural, economic and physical environments. My goal is to advocate for healthy school environments. Children of all ethnicities and socio-economic groups spend most of their waking hours together in schools, and therefore, schools are ideal environments for the promotion and establishment of healthy living in children. I believe that advocating for a healthy school community involves promoting: 1) healthy eating and 2) daily physical activity. 1. Healthy eating A healthy diet during childhood supports optimal health, growth and cognitive development, as well as aid in the prevention of chronic illness later in life (Van Cauwenberghe et al., 2010). Because children spend many hours per day in school, a significant amount of their total daily calories are consumed at school (Wechsler, Devereaux, Davis & Collins, 2000). Students can obtain low-nutrient products such as chips, ice creams, carbonated beverages and sweetened fruit juices in school cafeterias, vending machines and school stores (Wechsler et al., 2000). For example, vending machines were highly accessible in my high school. We had five of them in the cafeteria and one more in the front lobby. My friends...

...countries where obesity and overweight kills more people than underweight does (WHO, 2011). Obese children are more likely to have health problems throughout their childhood, these health issues are associated with long-term health consequences to which the economic costs are enormous (Swinburn, 2008). Obesity in childhood is frequently tracked into adulthood, this is clearly a major contributor for the adulthood epidemic. Interventions and preventions have become key strategies in reducing the impact of childhood obesity. Through national and international health promotions, promoting healthy eating and physical activity in environments that reduce childhood obesity. The rapid increase of childhood obesity not only is it a burden on psychological, physical but also socially (Deckelbaum & Williams, 2005). Health care professionals such as nurses’ play a very important role in the prevention or management of obesity. Nurses’ can research current evidence in health promotions to find the best program for different populations by providing support and management of their illness (Bluford, Sherry & Scanlon, 2007). Throughout this is essay all these points will be discussed in more detail. Obesity and overweight have been defined as an excess or abnormal fat accumulation that may impair health within children and adults (Rabbitt & Coyne, 2012). Worldwide increasing obesity prevalence in children is on the rise (Deckelbaum & Williams, 2005). Traditionally obesity has been an adult disorder...

...Health Promotion Prevention Adrianne Gorman Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V-0104 August 10, 2014 The health promotion includes strengthening the skills of individuals to encourage healthy behaviors, and it also includes constructing the healthy social and physical environments to support these actions (Green 1979). It includes any mixture of health instruction and associated organizational, economic, and political interventions designed to facilitate behavioral and environmental changes promoting to health (WHO, 2011). Health promotion involves all different countries from around the world to join together in collaboration to ensure that all the people from each and every community have the resources and information available to educate and further advance their participation in healthy lifestyle. This should be an opportunity available to all individuals even if they are financially dependent, old, uneducated, educated, affluent, or young to name just a few. The green health promotion gives the idea of improving the ecological health and sustainability of the community, school, or business. Green health promotion has been a term since 1986 when the Ottawa Carter for Health Promotion was involved in the ecological public health movement. Green promotion is heard throughout the country. ...chose to explore the benefits of “Parent and Tot” play gyms in my community. Acting as a social network for parents and children, play gyms offer a positive social environment to play, learn, and converse with peers. Play gyms are a fun space for children to play and be physically active. Lastly with the ever increasing housing costs, children have limited space to play as larger places become more expensive. Therefore, play gyms have an overall positive affect on toddlers and adults alike promoting physical, emotional, and social well-being while keeping costs to a minimum. Healthy child development is an essential determinant of health because of the longterm effects on the rest of a child's life. Having a healthy upbringing can influence choices later on in life to prevent obesity, increase activity, and create a foundation for social skills. Parent-Tot programs deal with many of the determinants of health that are outside the scope of the health care system. A child's social support networks are just as important as maintaining their physical exercise. These play gyms are great for learning social skills, for instance children learn how to take turns, and exercise patients. Play gyms also allow other adults to interact with each other. Social support networks for the entire family are important to allow parents to be the best they can be for their children. Perry et. Al ( 2014) states “Support from families and friends and from informal and formal groups can provide practical...

... Obesity is generally linked to overconsumption of food and more specifically, fast food. Michael Pollan, in his book “the omnivore’s dilemma”, states: “when food is abundant and cheap, people will eat more and get fat”. He blames the obesity epidemic in the United States on the excess eating of food as a result of it being accessible and inexpensive. His statement is accurate; people tend to buy more of an item when it is cheap and the same goes for food and drink. And, because most cheap foods especially processed foods contain high level of fat, sugar, sodium and calories, their overconsumption lead to health issues and obesity. However, while the consumption of cheap food plays a big role in the incidence of obesity, especially in children. However, there are a numerous other influences that should be considered when analyzing the prevalence of obesity in America; two of...

...Standard 1: Promoting Child Development and Learning 1a. Know and understand children’s characteristics and needs 1b. Know and understand the multiple influences on development and learning 1c. Use developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments Promoting child development and learning to me is a very important characteristic. This particular detail in Early Childhood encompasses all of the important values of a child from their influences to what they will do when you influence their work or play time. A child’s needs in and out of the classroom are an important value in life. When inside of a classroom you always want to be on top of things especially when you are looking for ways to promote learning in your classroom. As a teacher you especially want to be on the lookout for developmental influences and hindrances in your classroom. While within this standard you also want to be able to acknowledge your students strive to learn and develop and never try to prevent them from discovering something on their own. I believe that in order to create a safe, healthy and learning environment one must be able to get down on a child’s level of play to be able to understand how things can influence that child. At this point in time I am not working with children on a personal level such as in a day care or School system but I do work very closely with all of the young children at my church and interact closely with any...

...Running head: HEALTH PROMOTION IN NURSING PRACTICE Health Promotion In Nursing Practice Elizabeth Carhuapoma Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS 429 April Herrera July 08, 2012 Health Promotion In Nursing Practice As health care evolves and changes, the roles of nurses in health promotion and prevention have expanded greatly. The goal is to prevent disease from occurring rather than taking a reactive position of treating the client once disease has already occurred. Health defined by Edelman and Mandle is a state of physical, mental, spiritual, and social functioning that allows a person to reach their individual potential for optimal health (Edelman & Mandle, n.d.). In order to reach these goals, levels of prevention have been defined and nurses take an active role in the implementation of positive changes in clients’ lifestyle. On each level of the health promotion continuum, the nurse has to keep in mind the clients’ cultural and educational background to develop mutually agreed- upon goals. “Primary care providers, including nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses, now attempt to involve individuals and their families in the delivery of care, teaching individuals about individual responsibilities and lifestyle choices has become an important part of their job”(Edelman & Mandle, p. 9). These positive changes improve the quality of the clients’ and families lives. The three- levels of health care promotion...

There are many agencies that are responsible for addressing and managing the affect of obesity in children. The Department of transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency are working together to help promote walking and biking to school as a way to increase the level of exercise for children. Also the United State’s Department of Agriculture or USDA is also working towards providing new Dietary Guidelines and Food Pyramid as well as helping with legislation to improve school food. The Role of Health Agencies Physical activity is one of many indicators of health defined in the most current version of Healthy People. One of the main results of lack of activities is obesity mainly in children. Obesity in children is a health issue that most health care providers that serve the pediatric community have to deal with and are looking for possible solutions.
