... Extra Credit (UB Center for Excellence in Writing) Today I sat down with Becky, one of the writing consultant, talking about what she normally do to help people in their writing and her goal. After the conversation, I have learned three important lessons which will benefit me in my future. First, having an obvious statement is important in writing. According to Becky, she meets both undergraduate and graduate students on a daily basis who needs help editing and improving their writing skills. For instance, Becky helps those people how to organize ideas, convey clear thoughts, brainstorming, and fix sentence structures which would look more appealing. Second, proofreading is also very essential to be a good writer. Becky faced problems with students for not proofreading their work properly. For example, she noticed some people who didn’t use proper grammar in their writing, never say new things but repeatedly using too much vocabularies, and did not do thorough work analysis. Becky adds that most people just wanted their writing to be as beautiful as possible. Unlike other students, Becky’s main goal is to make sure people don’t use many big words and make the writing as simple as possible. In other words, she emphasized the importance of “clarity” in writing. I also think maintaining the structure of both clarity and simplicity is important for students who need to improve their writing. Lastly, being confident in yourself is necessary...

...Essay writing (Assignment writing) Examples from Deakin University (Some editing – WHJ – April 2013) What makes a good essay? These are the views of one lecturer on good essays. “Follow these relatively simple rules and a student will produce a good essay” The student does the following: * Answers the question set by the lecturer. * Develops the argument logically, so that one point follows from another coherently. The essay should hold together and be consistent. * Indicates the evidence on which the argument and individual points are based and acknowledge the sources of information. Paraphrase and summarise the writers mentioned – do not just use direct quotes. * Keeps to the word limits and other directions set by the lecturer and is as concise as possible. * Avoids irrelevant or extraneous information that detracts from the main argument. * Uses words that he/she understands and is comfortable with. Some students will have a better command of language and a wider vocabulary than others. However, the important thing is to get the message across clearly * Is sure to edit the work for spelling and typographical mistakes before handing it in. Sloppy work detracts from what might otherwise be a good essay. To summarise, a good essay will: a) develop a logical argument b) be coherent, consistent and concise c) provide evidence d) acknowledge sources e) conform to directions f) use clear language. The...

Owens Department of Communications Peace College Kristine Trever School of Mass Communications Point Park University H E L P W A NT E D 2010: An examination of new media skills required by top U.S. news companies Debora W enger, L ynn C . Owens, K ristine T rever Determining the skills needed for employment and success in the journalism profession has never been more important. In a period of severe economic stress, journalism companies continue to hire staff, but at much reduced levels and amid vast layoffs, particularly within the print industry. Against this backdrop, this paper explores the impact of technological and economic change on the hiring practices of American news media organizations. A content analysis was conducted over a period of three months in 2008 and 2009 for all the employment opportunities posted by the top ten newspaper and broadcast journalism companies in the United States. Each year, more than 700 postings were coded to determine the most desirable skills and attributes for job candidates and the amount of emphasis placed on multimedia expertise. The study also relied on interviews with recruiters for these companies who share their own views on what makes a desirable job candidate and reflect on some of the study’s findings. The paper argues that these job postings reflect an entire industry in transition. And in fact, the researchers identified several important changes from year-to-year, including an increased...

...deal with conflict together? How does a team combine each member’s different creative thoughts and ideas into one? Doing research about how teams write together before starting the project will help with the process once the team is ready to begin. Even though everyone has creative differences, collaborative writing is more effective than individual writing because each person brings a variety of thoughts to the table and five heads are better than one. “In an article on the technology and processes of collaborative writing, David Farkas offers four possible definitions useful in approaching collaboration through an analysis of processes. For his purposes, collaboration is: 1. two or more people jointly composing the complete text of a document; 2. two or more people contributing components to a document; 3. one or more person modifying, by editing and/or reviewing, the document of one or more persons; and 4. one person working interactively with one or more person and drafting a document based on the ideas of the person or persons. ([Farkas1991] p. 14)” (What is collaborative writing?, 1991, ¶ 3) Collaborative writing is a group interacting together on a project with the team’s ideas and input merged in an organized manner with an agreed upon final product. For collaborative writing to be...

...LECTURE 2 – POWELL THE WRITING PROCESS KINDS OF WRITING/DISCOURSE TYPES: THE BASIC PURPOSES OF WRITING ARE TO INFORM, TO PERSUADE, AND TO ENTERTAIN. Prose is ordinary written/spoken language without poetic structure. Prose that informs is called exposition/expository writing. Expository writing explains how things work, ideas, how to solve a problem, facts about everyday life, history, controversial issues. Expository writing is constructed LOGICALLY – organized around structures like cause and effect, true and false, less and more, positive and negative, general and specific, sequences or series of steps/procedures, chronology, etc. Ideas in exposition are moved along by connectives like therefore, however, but, in fact, and, for example. An example of expository writing is the information report – facts about a subject with descriptions, definitions and classifications, e.g. scientific reports or business reports with diagrams, technical language or jargon (words/expressions specific to a particular profession). Certain descriptive and narrative writing can also fall under the category of writing that informs. Descriptions of the details of experiences, people, places, situations, processes should be arranged into a meaningful pattern, and narration should give an account of related events/incidents as in a report and in a logical sequence. Prose that persuades is often called argumentative writing. The writer takes a stand, proving an opinion/argument...
