When talking about sex the first thing anybody notices would be the external sex organs of each of the sexes. For a man the external sex organs would be the penis and the scrotum. Whereas the woman’s external sex organs are the vulva which is made up of the mons veneris, the labia majora and minora, the clitoris, and the vaginal opening. Now no matter which sex you are a part of the external sex organs look different on each person. When we talk about a man’s sex organ the first thing a person might think of is the penis which is the organ that is used during intercourse. The penis is made up of three cylinders of spongy material that runs the length of the penis and swells with blood which causes the erection. The scrotum is a pouch of loose skin below the base of the penis that has two compartments that holds the testicles. The testicles are a part of the internal sex organs and are in charge of making sperm and testosterone. When it comes to talking about a woman’s sex organs it is not as easy as talking about a man’s. The mons veneris consists of fatty tissue that covers the joint of the pubic bones. The labia majora are large folds of skin that run downward form the sides of the vulva. The labia minora surround the urethral and vaginal openings. The clitoris is an upward sloping shaft of spongy tissue the fills with blood. The vagina or “entranceway” is the organ used in intercourse by women it is very sensitive to stimulation. The internal sex organs of a woman include the innermost part of the vagina, the cervix, uterus, and the two ovaries that are connected to the uterus by fallopian tubes. Yes, you read that right the vagina is part of both the external and internal sex organs. The vagina extends back upward from the vaginal opening and is normally 3 to 5 inches long while at rest. Now a woman’s cervix is at the lower end of the uterus it produces secretions much like the vagina which contributes to the chemical balance of the vagina. The uterus is the organ in which an ovum or egg implants itself and develops until birth. The ovaries are on either side of the uterus and they produce the ova or egg and also produce the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. The fallopian tubes are what an egg travels through in order to reach the uterus from the ovaries. So when it is time to try and make a baby the sperm that have been sitting and waiting inside the man’s testicles in a kind of threadlike structure known as the spermatogenesis which leads them to a maze of ducts called the epididymis where they sit and chill for a couple more weeks. When it is time for the man to ejaculate the semen which is made up of fluid from the prostate gland and the Cowper’s gland and of course our little friends the sperm is expelled from the man’s penis and into the woman’s vagina. Now at the same time the sperm are over in the man chilling out in the epididymis the woman’s body is working on making the ova or egg so she can do her part to try and make a baby. During the ovulation phase the egg is released near the fallopian tube this happens when estrogen production is at a high. It is while the egg is in the fallopian tube that good old sperm comes in to say hello. Now the race is on all of the sperm what the chance to make that baby with egg. The winning sperm is the one that makes it inside of the egg leaving his old friends behind to start a new adventure with egg. Together they now make their way down the fallopian tube to the uterus. Once they enter the uterus egg will implant on the wall together egg and sperm will develop over the next nine months into a baby. Each sperm can have either an “x” or a “y” chromosome which is what will determine just what sex the baby will be since egg has only the “x” chromosome.
