Martini textbook (ninth edition), you will study the basics of cells, tissues and some organs as integumentary system, skeletal system, muscle system and Nervous system. Tests
. There are not make-ups for Tests. If you miss a Test for which a medical or court excuse is provided [professional letterhead required] an incomplete grade maybe considered. To get an Incomplete Grade you need the documented excuse for your absence and pass more than 60% of the course; an Incomplete Grade form must be signed with the chair person and your instructor; an attachment of the professional letter will be made to your form.

Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing in any form, you will receive a failing grade for the course and be reported to the college for appropriate disciplinary action. You must arrive on time for exams. Arriving late disrupts students who are in the process of taking an exam. Anyone arriving more than ten minutes late for an exam may, at the instructor's discretion, not be allowed to take that exam. After the first person submits their exam, anyone else arriving beyond that time will not be allowed to take it.

This is a new tool from the book; in this LMS system you will do homework and quizzes. This is Mandatory and is 20% of your grades. Each assignment has a due date, after the due date you will be penalize and receive a grade of zero. Two assignments will be dropped considering emergencies and technical difficulties. The due dates will be posted for each assignment in the web page. In case you miss more than four assignments you will lose the right to stay in the class and I will drop you from the course.

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory .You will attend every class. If an emergency arises, the instructor expects to be contacted if you cannot attend to class. It is your personal responsibility to get notes or handouts from classmates or to see the instructor during office hours for additional help. You are always welcome during my office hours to receive help; I am here to facilitate your process of Learning. Your attendance record can affect your final grade; your tardiness will be considered a distraction of the class.
Absence from classes will be excused only with a signed note from a physician certifying illness on the date(s) missed or, under extenuating circumstances, by prior arrangement with the instructor. Emergencies must be documented in writing. Crises or emergencies include severe illness requiring a doctor's visit or hospitalization, death in the family, or college-excused events (which must be approved ahead of time). They do not include not feeling well, oversleeping, forgetting, not finding parking, or needing help from or for a friend, roommate, family member, or pet.
A student who is absent from the first week of class [or the "first meeting of a class that meets once a week"] loses the right to remain on the class roll, UNLESS the instructor is notified [in advance] that the absence is temporary. The student who has lost the right to remain in the class will be dropped, following College procedures and deadlines. During the course, more than 4 unexcused absences are enough to lose the right to remain in class; two tardiness will be treated as an absence.

Service Learning
I decided to include in the curriculum Service Learning under the philosophy of experiential education. In my opinion one of the most important missions of colleges is to prepare a generation of active and engaged citizens. Civic Service Learning provides an opportunity for students to use skills and knowledge in real life situations; also promotes learning trough active participation in services experiences. Service Learning, the activity with the reflection will count as 10 points over your final grade. Service Learning requires a commitment of 30 hours and a reflection paper with a scientific board. In order to work in a Hospital as Mercy, South Miami or Doctors Hospital, begin the application as soon as you can; and plan than more than 40 hours are usually required by hospitals, because they train you to work with patients. Hospital requires Orientation and screening Test. You will work there with Doctors and Nurses to apply your knowledge from the class. If you cannot work in a Hospitals, other agencies may be considered; but they need a close relation with health care, or tutor students in science and is mandatory to receive approval from your Professor before you begin the application .The due date for the Service Learning Project is April 23.. After you submit the application to your Professor, you will receive the questions for the reflection paper.
Behavior
The uses of telecommunications devices that include cellular phones, beepers, are not permitted. Leaving classrooms in order to use cellular phones will be only permitted in the case of extreme emergencies. Do not interrupt class by chatting with your classmates. This type of behavior is not polite with your classmates and your instructor. I encourage a respectful behavior in my classes. Respect students backgrounds, cultures and different opinions. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Classes with100 students requires to bring your name written in a paper with a marker. Is the best way, to help students to interact in the class.

* Please check your Miami Dade College e-mail account before classes * Read the assigned material before coming into class * Try not to memorize terminology mechanically, but learn the meaning of the terms you are using * Do not hesitate to ask questions * Attend to class regularly * Assume responsibility for your own learning * Additional study help is available in the form of tutoring and open lab hours. There are two lab rooms 3319 and 3326 that have either software (ADAM, interactive Anatomy and Physiology and others). Also you have Videos and other visual material or tutors that can really help you in retaining the course material.

...Here is my evaluation of Melissa, a 25 year old woman who was brought into my care unconscious and unresponsive after an automobile accident. When she was given an EEG there was no evidence that the mammalian part of her brain had any action potentials. With further investigation, we have seen AP in her primitive or reptilian part of her brain and that is why Melissa is still breathing with help of respirator and her heart rate is within normal range. Her Cortex obtained major damage in her frontal, parietal,occipital and temporal lobes and shut down all neuron activity in Melissa’s brain. Meaning her brain is producing no electrical impulses, or impulses that indicate it can-support life. A person in this state has no thoughts, and no chance of ever having thoughts again, and can only be kept alive with constant care by medical staff and machinery. Melissa has brain death and will no longer be able to be herself ever again she is accentually dead, as the Melissa you know died the minute her Cortex was damaged and her neurons stopped producing electrical currents. This patient is only breathing and her heart beating because the reptilian part of the base of the brain is still sending out life supporting neurons to keep these basic functions going. This is not to be mistaken for a coma,if she was lucky enough to endure this kind of brain damage, she may be able to stay alive and regain some of her traits that make up who Melissa is.
