...Analysis Of National and Regional Quality Awards by Robert J. Vokurka, Gary L. Stading and Jason Brazeal Q UALITY, AS MOST ORGANIZATIONS KNEW IT, RAPIDLY CHANGED DURING THE 1980s. Due to successful Japanese efforts, U.S. industries began to discover the competitive advantages that quality could bring and how the lack of a quality system could bring an end to business. With customers demanding quality and competitors responding to such demands, businesses turned to total quality management (TQM) as the key to enhance overall performance. As customer expectations increased and performance improvement initiatives were implemented, quality evolved from a product specific focus to an organizationwide effort, from a separate manufacturing function to a strategic business initiative. The quality function was expanding, and with that came new practices concerning continuous improvement. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, several countries established programs to recognize the inventive, yet effective, quality practices taking place—once again, after Japan, which began honoring quality practices in the 1950s. The criteria of most of these award programs encouraged strategic initiatives in the approach and deployment of quality practices. But as with most successful quality initiatives, the award programs underwent continuous improvements in design and administration. In their pursuit of TQM, organizations around the world began turning to quality award programs for more than just the...

...Baldrige National Quality Award for Health Care Organizations Elaine Reeves HCA 375 – Ashford University Paula Arceneaux December 5, 2011 Quality Improvement in Healthcare Health care is something commonly visited with my family and me. Having three children in the last seven years, my family and I have had our share of hospital and medical office visits. The quality in care does not go unnoticed as I see many areas that need improvement, as well as other areas that are exemplary. One measure that many organizations utilize is continuous quality improvement (CQI). It is a structured organizational process by which personnel plans and executes a constant flow of improvements in order to provide exceptional quality healthcare (McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 2006). CQI is an approach to quality management, where traditional quality assurance is implemented and emphasizes on the systems of the organization. Aside from gaining satisfaction and confidence from patients, quality improvements of a healthcare organization (if applied successfully) can earn prestigious awards. When quality in healthcare meets government regulations and standards, and when satisfactory is met with the public and/or patients, many organizations are recognized for their achievements in quality. Some organizations are rewarded, along with their recognition, with awards reflecting their success. One such award is the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Stated in the article Four U. S...

...Impacting Organizational Learning: The Training and Experiences of Quality Award Examiners and Assessors Prof. V.K. Susil Kumar Faculty and Manager – Placements Institute for Technology and Management, 11/D 14, Fourth Main Road, SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), Pudupakkam Post, Chennai – 603103 Landline: 044-32974148 Mobile: 9380502425 Abstract The Training and Experiences of Quality Award Examiners and Assessors aim to show that developments in the quality award assessment process in organizations can make a contribution, within a wider framework of organizational learning. The underpinning theoretical argument is that quality award models and associated organizational assessment processes can be used to achieve much wider benefits, than that of quality per se. The quality award assessment process has been applied in organizations from the mid-1980s to the present. The process uses models such as the Business Excellence Model and the Baldrige model. These models use an interpretation of quality, which is based on the holistic approach of total quality management. In parallel with the development of the assessment process, there has been considerable development in the field of organizational learning with an emphasis on developing learning based skills in employees. It shows how the learning experiences and skills developed and enhanced through the assessment process can be applied within an organization’s approach to learning in other...

...Johnathan Songer 12.9.12 Professor Sacco Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Awards Motorola Under the seven key areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and results, Motorola qualified for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Awards. In 1988 the company was recognized for outstanding success in these areas. After nearly one thousand hours of review and site visits, the company displayed a strong sense of management and operational skills as well as a particular feel for training and development. Atop the list of managerial methods at Motorola is their use of Six Sigma in order to measure the amount of defects in a batch of product and hopefully reduce that number. Operating under the Six Sigma Quality requires the company to produce variation while maintaining consistency. A more noticeable quality of Motorola in the eyes of the public would be the company’s ability to reduce cycle time and by doing so, the time from which an order is received to when it is delivered can be shortened to the direction of maximum efficiency. Before Motorola conceives these types of ideas, top-level management meetings are held to discuss and review quality programs such as these. Not only are all levels of the company involved, the Participative Management Program (PMP) bonuses account for 3% of Motorola’s payroll. In order to obtain employees capable of upholding such responsibility, Motorola...

...receive VIP treatment--all in good fun. A`Time Frame * The best time for hosting a red carpet theme party is on the day of a special occasion or the date of a scheduled special event, such as an award show (Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, etc.). For a movie premiere, the party entourage could go to the movies to watch the show and then have the party immediately following the show. The same agenda works for a concert or stage show. Make sure to have someone setting up the party during the show or have everything in place before heading off for the show, so that things will be easy to pull together when everyone arrives back at the party. Oftentimes if it is a movie premiere, one could wait until the movie comes out on video until hosting the party. This way everyone cand watch the movie during the party. Features * When guests arrive and begin to stroll the red carpet to the entrance, simulate the paparazzi by having a photographer or several photographers shooting flash photos. This is a great way for guests to feel special while creating a memento of the party for a future scrapbook or to share with friends. Inside of the party, be sure to treat guests like royalty by offering gift baskets or swag bags full of goodies, similar to what is given to celebrities at award shows (albeit on a less expensive price scale).
