Re-Urbanism is a new way of thinking. Demolishing a building should be last resort. If we want to shape communities, we have to find what places have meaning in these communities. Chicago is a great cities to start this new way of thinking. Using The Atlas of Re-Urbanism as tool to gather information on addressing some issues to reusing buildings in Chicago. This will present us with barriers to reuse, some recommendations, and how we should go about implementing Re-Urbanism in Chicago. Chicago can do this by fallowing the ten principles for Re-Urbanism (refer to the ten principle from first paper).

This tools is provided to community leaders by the National Trust for historic Preservation. We know that older and smaller is better for communities. Across the nation older blocks with older smaller buildings contribute more to local economies and Chicago has an abundance of these types of buildings. The city has 91.2% of Chicago buildings being built before 1967. While the city only has 5.6% of the 489,588 buildings being on the national registry of historic places it currently has 81 projects using historic tax credit compared to a 50 city average of 27.5. The major of these buildings are located in the northwest side of the city along interstate 90. First, we need to adopt building reuse policies within the Chicago Zoning Code. Second, Change the parking requirements for reuse projects. Third, adopt a more flexible building code for older buildings in Chicago. Fourth, support community development, non-profits, and small-scale developers. Lastly, improve financial incentives for building reuse. These are the necessary actions that will need to take place to support Re-Urbanism in Chicago. (Powe)
Now, implementation of these recommendation should be done in a three step strategie. First, create target area which will be used for plot programs for new zoning, code, and financing approach. If successful expand to other areas throughout the city. Sound, create a task force that deal with further assessments and gather more information to create and explore implantation of new financial tools. Third, is to ensure desired outcome by creating a regular review board with key stakeholders, to find solutions to problems. By following these three steps to implementing will help the progress successfulness.
