...Research Question How does the height of dropping a basketball affect the time it bounces? Aim I have played a lot of basketball in my life, however, never before thought about the physics behind the sport. When I was given the opportunity to plan and prepare my own investigation, I tried to seize the chance as much as possible by combining it with my hobby. I was curious if this experiment would give me new knowledge and improve my skills, or just confirm the information I have already gained during basketball practice. Background information That most balls bounces are something we learn from an early age, but why is that a universal phenomenon, why doesn’t the ball just stay on the ground when dropped? Physics, and especially the field...

...Insufficient Sleep: The Silent Enemy of Fitness 1 Insufficient Sleep: The Silent Enemy of Fitness Brad Park Western Governors University Insufficient Sleep: The Silent Enemy of Fitness 2 It can be seen on television, read in the paper, and heard on the radio that it's time for America to get into shape. Obesity is up and engaging in healthy exercise is down. The obvious thing to blame is poor food choices and if that's coupled with working long hours then it's no wonder. Nevertheless, despite those issues people are finally deciding to make fitness a priority in their lives by watching what they eat and exercising more. However, they may find that the weight's not coming off, physical performance is going down, or they can't seem to put on any muscle. The culprit behind these issues may be surprising: sleep. A lack of sleep, which is becoming the norm in our society, is being proven to negatively effect several key areas of one's physical fitness. First, studies show a connection between sleep deprivation and weight control including less fat loss, changes in metabolism, and increased hunger. Next, research conducted on sleep restricted athletes resulted in less stamina, slower reaction times, and changes in mood. Finally, tests on sleep deprived subjects showed lowered testosterone, growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels which all play major roles in building muscle. Getting enough sleep every night is more important to your fitness...

...looking into the depths of one and giving an honest assessment of what is seen. Understanding what one can do and knowing limitations can lead to maximization of abilities in other aspects of life. This paper will analyze and explain my personality. Topics will include a definition of personality, concepts that explain my personality and features, and personality tests. Several measurements, such as money or religion, divide humans and place them into different categories. The uniqueness of personality is that it separates people by whom they are and their actions. Personality is the ever evolving totality of characteristics, behaviors, and traits that distinctively define a particular person. Some personality traits are hereditary and others evolve as a person develops depending on their exposure to different aspects of life. The subconscious, biology, level of interaction, and environment of an individual all help shape a personality. Many of the key personality features that define me come from my biology and my interaction with my environments. Athletics are a feature that comes from my parents. My mother played basketball and my father ran track, wrestled, played basketball, and football throughout high school and college. Playing or discussing basketball is a dream job along with a general like for almost every sport. Many of my attitude traits come from service in the United States Army. After four years of service it is quickly understood that excuses...

...Book Review After getting this assignment I was in a little panic because I had no idea what I wanted to do. Doing a reaction paper to a movie that deals with diversity/race is not something I do everyday, but I decided to buckle down and get it done. There are tons of movies that deal with diversity, but a lot of those movies aren’t movies I’m interested in, this made my decision a lot harder. While looking through my movie collection I came across a few movies that fit the assignment description, Guess Whose Coming to Dinner, Glory Road, Guess Who, Remember the Titans, The Great Debaters, etc. After finding all these movies I decided I wanted to do something that deals with something I can closely relate to, after some great thought I went with the Disney movie, Glory Road. Glory Road is a movie that is based on a true story that happened at the University of Texas El Paso in 1966. It addresses the events that the players and coaches faced during this time period due to racism. Once a girl’s high school basketball coach, Don Haskins was recruited by UTEP to be the head coach of the men’s basketball program. At the time of taking the job, Coach Haskins had no idea what he got himself in to. He walked himself into a program with a non-existent recruiting budget. With no money to recruit Coach Haskins was not able to attract the more popular and well-known white player to UTEP. Not willing to give up on his winning tendencies he decides to change it up by recruiting African...

Known as the neighbourhood recluse, silver-haired Forrester is a man whose mystery and eccentricity border on the mythical. When he discovers that Jamal - a talented African-American scholar-athlete who is recruited by an elite Manhattan school for his brilliance on and off the basketball court - has sneaked into his apartment and left his backpack full of writings behind, they both get something unexpected in return. Forced to look past skin colour and suppositions, Jamal encounters not only his first fan, but a mentor who will challenge and change him forever, and Forrester has his first reason in years to emerge from his self-imposed solitude. ...Professor’s Name Course Number Date Utaboopia Utopia is seen as a fantasy place or an indefinitely isolated region. Thus, a taboo is considered as being communal or spiritual traditions that prohibit a particular practice (“Modern Death: Taboo or not Taboo Par 1”). Utaboopia can be defined as the restrictions that are placed in an imaginary universe concerning certain things. This paper is going to respond to alternate questions about the imaginary facts. Consequently, the paper will answer questions concerning personal experience in the Utaboopia world. According to the manuscript “This book is Taboo by Randall Eggert,” It is clear that it talks about the prologue of linguistics. Randall also explains that individual acts can not be performed in some parts of the world because they will be termed as a taboo. Taboo can be explained through alternate examples whereby basing on “James Sullivan” article titled “7 dirty words” it is seen that when his son was expelled from a basketball team for conducting a foul. The son’s reaction as he advanced the bench was to shout the phrase “damn it.” But this did not go well with one woman as well as several other people who were watching the match since the insisted on an apology. From this, it is right to say that the crowd might have professed the son’s linguistic character as being a taboo although they did not investigate the reasons as to why he had to employ that idiom (Sullivan Pg 3). In considering...

...The Self Paper Kimberly Kline Psych/555 January 20, 2014 Tracy Masiello The Self Paper This paper will define the concept of self, and explain how an individual develops a self-concept. It will explain the relationship between the self and emotion and how this relationship affects an individual’s self-esteem. It will also explain the relationship between the self and behavior and how this relationship affects an individual’s self-presentation. The Concept of Self Self- concept is the knowledge and beliefs people have about themselves. According to Fiske, (2010) self-concept is broken down into conceptual self and operational self. Conceptual self can be broken down into the material self which looks at the boundaries of our physical bodies, the inner self which is more of our private self or our inner identity, the interpersonal self is the role we play in our lives and how we interact with others and the societal self which deals with the society we live in and/or our culture. The operational self relates to self-concept, self –esteem and self-presentation. Self-concept deals with the cognitive aspect of self. It is the knowledge and beliefs we have about ourselves and how we represent our self to others. Self-esteem is more of our self and our emotions. Self-esteem is measure by how people feel about themselves. If people feel valuable and meaningful their self-esteem is rated to be high. If a person feels insignificant...

...Case Study Analysis Paper 3 Grand Canyon University: LDR-600 May 7, 2014 Fiedler's Contingency Model In order to understand the performance of a leader, the leader needs to be placed in different situations, which can show their ability to lead. “Effective leadership is contingent on matching a leader’s style to the right setting” (Niorthouse, 2013, p. 123). By the use of the contingency theory, the subordinate’s reaction can affect the way the leader will teach and react. This theory gives better understanding of how the leaders interact with the employees, and if they will be effective in specific situations. “Contingency theory matches the leader and the situation, but does not demand that the leader fit every situation” (Northouse, 2013, p. 127). The styles are divided into task-motivated and relationship-motivated. Coach Knight and coach Krzyzewski (coach K) use in this case study, are proven effective in their leadership styles and approach to their team members, because they both have winning teams. According to Fiedler’s Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) scale, coach Knight will have low score and be identified as a task motivated leader who “will be effective in both very favorable and very unfavorable situations—that is, in situations that are going along very smoothly or situations that are out of control” (Northouse, 2013, p. 125). Coach K will score high on LPC scale which describes him as a leader who is relationship motivated, and who will be...

...The definition of Ripple Effect according to our text is, “A chain reaction that begins in one part of a system and spreads across an entire system.” In the movie Hoosiers, one can see an example of the Ripple Effect take place within the townspeople. With the team’s star player not returning, there are many opinions and suggestions being made as to how the Hickory Huskers should be coached. When the new coach Norman Dale seems to brush the opinions of the townspeople away, they become hostile and agitated with him. George Walker, who is the obvious leader of the concerned townspeople, decides that he will step in and become the assistant coach. When George is denied the role of assistant coach, there is immediate hostility. George rallies fellow parents and townspeople to observe practices and gets them riled up about the new coaching techniques Coach Dale uses. When Coach Dale decides to recruit the town drunk as his assistant coach, George convinces the people to go as far as taking a vote to get Coach Dale removed from his position. The anger and frustration from one person ended up radiating throughout an entire town, and although some people may have never acted on their feelings, the actions of one man caused the Ripple Effect of actions through many. The Ripple Effect doesn’t always lead to a negative outcome. At the town meeting to have the coach voted out of his position, Myra Fleener, who is a fellow teacher at Hickory High, stands before the people and tells them that...

...first of many game winning plays I saw watching sports including the most recent of them which was a game tying hail mary by Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs to send the game to overtime against the Arizona Cardinals. However, in that time I have seen many instances where players have had the chance to make a crucial game winning play at the end of the game but failed to do so. One of the biggest recurring things I’ve seen over the years are missed free throws in clutch moments of games by really good free throw shooters, which made me thinking how can some people make several clutch shots repetitively while some superstars choke under the pressure. I’ve seen players miss clutch free throws on TV all the time, but in January I went to Grissom basketball game and there best player JJ Kaplan got fouled from the 3 point line with half a second left and just needed to make two of the three free throws to tie the game. He was over an 80% free throw shooter, but at the most crucial moment he missed all 3 free throws and they lost the game, which made many questions pop up in my head. Would he still have missed all 3 free throws if it was in an empty gym? Or early in the game when the game wasn’t on the line? Did the pressure get to him? Was the crowd a factor? Ultimately after I walked out of the gymnasium on that breezy Friday night in January I knew that I wanted to focus my research on the was the question, Do athletes psychologically get affected by external pressures, especially fan pressure...

...someone of her age. Another sign that she may have a developmental issue was that there was a teacher that was specifically there to help the child. The teacher did so by walking with her, helping her pick up balls, or patiently holding her hand when she wanted to walk up a ramp. Compared to her peers, she seemed to have a smaller physique than her peers. During the classroom part of the observation, the teachers created a project in which the children would be creating clouds. There was a group of about 10 or 12 children sitting at a two tables painting and gluing cotton balls to paper. Most of the students were able to grip the crayon and color, grip the glue stick, and place the cotton balls on paper with little to no help. The teachers helped the students with minor things like showing them where to put the cotton balls on the paper but there were was one girl in particular who had very slow reactions when opening the glue stick and gripping the stick, demonstrating a struggle with her fine motor skills. When it came time to color, the girl seemed to be having a difficult time gripping the crayon so a teacher came and sat with her, holding her hand to show how to hold the crayon when coloring. During circle time, the same girl did not participate in any activity that required her to clap, stand, or dance. It seemed as though she was reluctant or unable to practice her motor skills. Something that I found particularly interesting and notable was that she was the smallest student...
