It is important to first look at some of the problem areas facing the United States Healthcare system in regard to Registered Nurses. It is significant to note that the nursing shortage is due in part to the aging workforce. Presently 75% of the nurses are older than 40 years of age. Many nurses around the age of 54 are electing to decrease their hours. There is increasing evidence that nurses are seeking early retirement at 62. The largest group of nurses will soon start to retire which is expected to create a 20% shortage due to the aging workforce. (Duvall, 2010) In addition to the worries about the aging workforce, there are concerns about stress, job satisfaction, and physical demands on the nursing population.
