In the last three decades, especially after the NPM movement, leadership has attracted substantial attention as an essential factor for organizational performance in the public sector (Cristin &Ticlu, 2012). The public has become increasingly captivated by the idea of leadership. People continue to ask themselves and others what makes good leaders. As individuals, they seek more information on how to become effective leaders (Bryman, 1992). Many people believe that leadership is a way to improve their personal, social, and professional lives. Corporations seek those with leadership ability because they believe they bring special assets to their organizations and, ultimately, improve the bottom line (Parry, 2003). In addition, leadership has gained the attention of researchers worldwide. A review of the scholarly studies on leadership shows that there is a wide variety of different...

...The New Psychology of Leadership: A Student Analysis, Implications and Relevance Arlene G. Piper University of Fredericton EMBA 7005 – Leadership Theory & Practice Professor: Mona Egvig January 25, 2015 Abstract Studies on leadership have been examined as early as circa 500 BC, where Sun Tzu described the five traits of a successful leader (Gagliardi, 1999). It is believed that his thoughts on leadership closely approximate the Situational Leadership theory of modern times. In 16th century AD, Niccolo Machiavelli put forth theories on how a prince should acquire and maintain his state. There have been numerous other strategists of their time, each offering and teaching various leadership principles; some of which are still relevant today. As action shifts from the battlefield to the boardroom, new leadership theories continue to emerge, existing ones are consistently being revised, reviewed and reframed, and new leadership gurus are emerging as household names. This paper will summarize the salient points identified in the article titled The New Psychology of Leadership, by Stephen D. Reicher, Michael J. Platow and S. Alexander Haslam published in the August 2007 issue of Scientific American Mind. The author will outline the relevance of this ‘new’ theory in the context of a current leadership role as well as the potential application of this leadership theory and the applicability within the expansion of a leadership role. The paper will conclude with key takeaways relevant...

Teagarden2 1 Florida International University, USA, and 2Thunderbird School of Global Management, USA ABSTRACT We use the parable of the blind men and the elephant to suggest that Barney and Zhang (2009) and Whetten (2009) analogously touch on only a part of the Chinese management research puzzle. Their analyses remind us of many attempts at anchoring the research purpose – etic versus emic approaches, exploration versus exploitation approaches, rigor versus relevance scenarios – touched on by the many commentators in this issue. We suggest researchers first answer the ‘purpose’ questions before embarking on the research design. The research design should fit the purpose of the knowledge, which is either to improve the performance of Chinese organizations (meeting the relevance criterion) or to replicate, extend or refine a theory developed in the US (meeting the rigour criterion). We believe the strength of applied management research allows us to create knowledge that can meet the criteria of both rigour and relevance. We support the use of academic international research teams and dialectic debate as tools to move the field of Chinese management research forward. ...1. Identify, and outline briefly, major trends in management theory since the beginning of this century. • Classical – this approach focuses on purpose, formal structure, hierarchy of management, technical requirements and common principle Scientific Management – A major sub-group of classical approach, emphasis is placed on increased productivity through technical structuring of the work organization and the provision of monetary incentive as motivator of highest output. Bureaucracy – Another major sub-group of classical approach, it focuses on the importance of administration based on expertise (rules of expert) and administration based on discipline (rules of official) • Structuralism – This approach places emphasis on the relationship between the formal and informal aspects of the organization of the organization, and the conflict of needs between the needs of the individual and organization, and between the workers and management. • Human Relations – This approach underlines the social factor at work and the behavior of employees within an organization. • Neo Human Relations – This approach is concerned on the personal adjustment of the individual work within the organization, and the effects of group relationships and leadership styles. • Systems – This approach is focused on the total work of the organization and the interrelationships of structure and behavior, and the range variables within the organization. • Contingency – This approach highlights the...

...Cheating, Copying, and Use of Tutor-Source Websites Copying is one of the most commonly committed acts that violate academic integrity. Copying includes looking off of someone else’s paper (or using someone’s paper or answers from another course, classroom, or previous session). It also is committed when a purchased (or free) paper is found online that is specific to the assignments provided in the course. Websites like Student of Fortune, ScribD, Ask.com, and so forth (many others) sometimes end up with DeVry assignments posted on them by students who have hired online tutor sources to write their work for them. Faculty members are aware of these sites and, just like students, can Google sources to find out if a paper has been bought from these sites. Avoid these sites like the plague—seriously. It just isn’t worth the extra hour or two it might buy you if you end up with a 0 for the paper or course or lose your degree over buying a paper (or getting it for free.) Typically, the #1 red flag to a professor that one of these sites has been used is when multiple students miss the same question in the exact same manner. Yes, the answers on those sites will typically cost money, but the answers are not guaranteed to be right. And further, the free papers on those sites almost always have wrong answers. Do not use these sites! Avoid them! If you use them, citing them is not enough to overcome the copying stigma and violation of the policy. As one instructor of the course...

... Commerce, Texas, USA Abstract Purpose – Fayol’s theories were the original foundation for management as a discipline and as a profession. Also Fayol was the first to advocate management education. Yet he has critics who revile him (or at least disparage his work) as well as followers who respect and revere him. This paper intends to enlighten today’s practitioners and academicians about the relevance and value of Fayol’s theories today. Design/methodology/approach – The paper addresses Fayol’s contributions as well as the disparagement and the reverence. It compares Fayol’s work with that of Follett, Mintzberg, Taylor, and Porter. In addition, it demonstrates the original and current interpretation and application of his theories. Finally, it indicates the alignment of Fayol’s theories with strategic leadership and management. Findings – Fayol’s theories are valuable and relevant for organizational leaders because Fayol was a practitioner who documented theories that worked best for him and his co-workers. While there are those who criticize Fayol’s theories, there are many others who respect them and find them useful as academicians and as practitioners. The theory of management functions aligns well with strategic leadership and management models and theories. Originality/value – The paper is the first to integrate Fayol’s theories with a strategic leadership model. Keywords Management theory, Management history, Leadership Paper type General review Henri Fayol – revered...

...Abstract In this paper the diverse leadership models will be focused upon, with theories along with the relevance to organizational success. Also defining the system theory and relevance of this biological construct to the business world. It continues by addressing how leadership theories evolved. Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership revolves around the implementation of new ideas, change, flexibility, adaptability, and continuous improvement. Transformational leaders possess the following characteristics: First, the leader has charisma. This characteristic is hard to define because no one really knows it until he experiences it. We can just be contented with defining it as something that inspires people to follow a leader with this characteristic. These leaders are seen as having special gifts or talents that make them able to influence people who are in distress. It is their personality, their skills and their presence that affect those who are in crisis or problem. These leaders can convince these affected members that their special gifts can alleviate their pain or solve their problem. When this happens, the members feel safer and directed and believe that the problem has been 'solved' and these leaders have an impact on their lives so they follow them. However, charisma involves dependency. Second, these leaders have vision. They can create a compelling picture of the future and make people develop commitment and a common goal in which...

...Nightingale hold. The science of nursing has evolved throughout the many decades since Florence Nightingale presented her first theory in 1859. She did not set out to write a theory but her work has influenced nursing practice for the past century and a half (George 2011).Her first focus and data collection was on the manipulation of the environment for the benefit of the patient, this focus continues through today with the prevention of hospital acquired infections such as Foley, CLABS, Pneumonia. With her research she was able to show data which corroborated that if certain environmental settings are not correct patients can have fatal outcomes as in the Crimean war and in the area of Maternal Mortality. Ms Nightingale documented her first concept of clean environment in her 1860 published notes. Through this work she laid the foundation for evidence based practice (Nightingale 1992). One of her most important contributions was to address the care from trained nurses versus untrained nurses which eventually lead to more trained nurses, and her starting a nursing school, she was able to speak on the purpose of the statistics, as she was a passionate statistician and pioneered survey instruments and she was also the first to present graphical data. Ms Nightingale used her power for professional change and development, her leadership style was...

This report is a personal manifesto that outlines my thoughts on the topic of leadership. The topic of leadership has been debated over endlessly this year. We have discussed what the difference is between transactional and transformational leadership, the qualities of the most effective leaders, the different levels of effective leadership and the different styles of leadership. Leadership is also something that, I’m pretty sure, each Genesis participant has physically experienced on top of academically studying it throughout this year. I feel that, after this year, I am much more aware of the importance of leadership and its...

The macro-environment impacts individual businesses, while individual businesses can hardly change the course of developments in the macro-environment. The stakeholder environment, on the other hand, does impact individual companies’ activities, but –contrary to the macro-environment- individual companies also impact the interests of their stakeholders. On Blackboard you will find corporate sustainability reports of ten listed companies. Companies increasingly publish sustainability reports to inform their stakeholders (and the broader public) about their sustainability performance. Please select and scrutinize a sustainability report of one of these companies. Subsequently, select at least five sustainability related issues and relate these to the company’s value chain...

...1799 1799 ‘How are the concepts of culture and leadership linked?’ Introduction: This literature review will make use of four pieces of academic work to discuss how the concept of culture can intrinsically affect leadership. The literature finds that the link between culture and leadership is an important, yet complicated relationship. I will begin by discussing and defining the central concepts of culture and leadership. I will then explain and analyse the significance of culture upon leadership. Finally I will review Hofstede’s cultural framework to assess its significance and relevance to the topic at hand. Culture: To begin, culture is a phenomenon that carries multiple definitions. A simplistic view sees it as “how things are done around here”(Ouchi and Johnson, 1978 p.293). Culture can also encompass the behaviours, attitudes, norms, morals and unconscious values instilled within a group of individuals (Schien, 1985). Hofstede himself defines culture as the “collective mental programming” (Hofstede, 1980 pp.43) of individuals bound by some form of common orientation or geographical boundary. Culture shapes everything within society, and as an extension, leadership. Leadership is another interlinked concept, commonly defined as a relationship by which followers are influenced, and inherent changes are made towards a collective purpose (Daft and Lane, 2005). Moreover leadership refers to the “core set of traits, behaviours, skills, or characteristics that...
