Abstract
This paper will identify how Mormons differ from other religious groups. Enlightening of the subject matters that pertain to their beliefs, practices, and how this religion group contributes to the American culture is the bases of the first part of the paper. This paper will also describe the discrimination and prejudice that the Mormons have to deal with because of their religion choice. This paper will also describe the African decent experience with discrimination and prejudice as well. Discrimination and prejudice takes place in all cultures and religions. People who are unwilling to understand and accept the difference that people share are going to allow this behavior to continue and pass it down from generation to generation. America is the melting pot for all ethnic backgrounds, including religions. Being more open minded and having understanding will allow us to break the stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination that we all have towards one another.

Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) and Black (African) Decent
The United States, throughout history, has been a country of immigrants and a country of religion diversity. Discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping in the Mormon and Black decent groups have been displayed throughout the changing times. The Mormons, who emerged after the discovery of The Book of Mormon in 1830, were run out of several states before settling in Utah. Blacks who were brought over here in the 1500’s by European mariners as slaves is all a part if how discrimination in the United States started for these two different groups of people.
Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) The United States has more Mormons than any other continent. Mormons were formed by Joseph Smith, who was regarded to have restored the church. The center of the Mormon culture is based in Utah. Mormons dedicate a large percentage of their time and resources to serving their church. Mormons differ from other religious groups in many ways. Mormons put an extreme load of work on its followers. “The overwhelming emphasis in the Mormon scriptures is on earning salvation through obedience to commandments and refraining from sin” (McDowell, 2012). Mormons believe in a heavenly father who has a physical body. They do not believe in one God or the Trinity. They have three Gods: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. When it comes to their belief in sin it is different than the Christian faith. The Mormons believe that every man is accountable for his own sin and all mankind will be resurrected and saved. The Mormons experience with other groups that do not share its beliefs or practices has not been very favorable. “62% of Mormons say the American people as a whole are uninformed about Mormonism. 68% say the American people as a whole do not see Mormonism as part of mainstream American society” (Pew Research, 2012). Mormons are well known for their avoidance in alcoholic drinks, teas, soda, and rated R movies. Mormons are very family orientated and have conservative views on social issues. Mormons have contributed to the American culture. Mormons believe that they are called by God to serve others. They give their time and expertise to church, society, and humanity. “An average American Latter-day Saint provides almost 430 hours of volunteer labor annually. This equates to approximately 35 hours per month. In comparison, the average American volunteer provides about four hours of volunteering per month” (DiSanto, 2012). As with any group Mormons have their fair share of discrimination and prejudice. Historically, Mormons have been discriminated against because of their belief in polygamy. Mormons embrace polygamy for spiritual reasons. Many people believe that polygamy is immoral. To the faithful members of the church “polygamy is part of a commandment from God that is encapsulated within Section 132 of The Doctrine and Covenants, one of the books canonized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (Wind River Publishing, Inc., 2008). Mormons do believe in polygamy, but many do not follow. The Mormon faith is one that leaves the person to question their beliefs and methods. Understanding what they believe in is easy, understanding why is up to the person. Mormon faith is not for everyone. Their understanding that God is a physical being and having prophets is not what Christians believe in. Christians do not judge, therefore, understanding is easy, believing no. Understanding that they have a tight knot family bond is something to value, the dedication to their church is something more people should value as well. Black (African Decent) Blacks make up the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Most came from West and Central African descent and are descendants of black slaves. Much of African history is passed down through oral traditions. Folk tales where told to inspire and educate one another. Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop all originated from the polyrhythmic music of the ethnic groups of Africa. Their cultural dances are centered on folk and social dance practices. The dances place a lot of emphasis on improvisation. The literature took its roots from the oral traditions of the slaves in America. Oral traditions are the center of the culture in the black community. The African culture has contributed to the richness and fullness of American culture. “African stories and folklore, such as the Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Chicken Little tales originated in Africa, and were absorbed into America’s culture of childhood and laid a foundation for American nursery culture” (Halloway, 2010). Africans also integrated their culture with American culture by sharing their agricultural methods of rice cultivation, southern cooking, open range grazing of cattle, and herbal medicines used to cure New World diseases, like small pox. Many inventions were made by Black Americans ranging from peanut butter to the lawn mower. Discrimination towards blacks has been around since slavery. In the 19th century legal discrimination against blacks in the United States was permitted. Segregation of the black community was coming to an end when the Civil Rights Movement pushed for laws to desegregate schools and prohibit discrimination in public businesses, government, and employment. Many Black Americans stood up during this time of injustice to fight for their rights. Martin Luther King Jr., was an activist who advanced the Civil Rights Movement in a nonviolent manner. Rosa Parks, who is known as the first lady of the civil rights, she stood her ground when asked to move to the back of the bus for a white man, known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The way the black community has been treated since the time they arrived in America, has been nothing but utterly cruel and injustice. The meaning of cruel and unusual punishment for prisoners it a cake walk for the ways that the black community has been treated over the years. The reasoning’s that just because the color of one’s skin allows another group of people to treat them inhuman is unacceptable. The movement that the blacks have done to change the way they are perceived and treated is commendable and well respected. The black community has brought so much of their culture to the American culture and deserves respect and gratitude. Conclusion The Mormons and the black community have both had their fair share of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. They both are dealing with inequality in the American culture. While the Mormons are discriminated against because of the beliefs in their religion the blacks are discriminated against because of the color of their skin. Discrimination in both groups has hurtful outcomes. In both cases, the groups stand up for the beliefs and educate the rest of the country on what it is like to be a part of them. Education for all is the key to end discrimination.

Adherents to this theological concept attribute physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional problems that people suffer to the activities of the oppressing spirits following the example of Jesus Christ given in the gospel. The practices and many of the underlying beliefs of these ministries are not accepted by all Christians. This religious group differs from others in a few different ways. They are compromised from different African countries and backgrounds. They preach in all different types of languages, when usually churches stick to one specific language. The Deliverance Ministry has contributed to the American culture by giving us a taste of a different kind of world and a different kind of view on religion.
