Report: Non-Traditional Kindergarten Classroom Observation

The classroom I observed was a non-traditional kindergarten classroom filled with lots of colors, ranging from bulletin boards to colorful posters of the alphabet and words that begin with those letters. The room’s layout was set up like the drawing above. The teacher had lots of materials (i.e. books, scissors, glue, etc.) that were readily available to students and were housed in bin labeled appropriately. The teacher also had lots of storage that was placed at a higher level out of the student’s reach so this minimized the distractions of students and prevented them from getting into things which were off limits. During center time and morning book work, the students knew they were allowed to use the materials, so they got up and got what they needed and returned it when finished. This was demonstrated when the teacher asked something of the students and they did it the first time it was asked. During this observation, the students did not mind speaking out if they had something that needed to be said or simply had a story they wanted to share with their classmates and teachers. In addition to the teacher having a relationship with the students, the teacher helped the students establish student-student relationships by placing them in groups according to their ability level. The students worked with their group members on daily basis so they had seemed to develop a close knit bond. The teacher never specifically informed the students that she had high expectations for them mastering the skills they were working on, but I’m sure they could tell by the excitement in her voice and the praises they received once they completed an assignment because I as an observer sure could. The measure was designed to be appropriate for classrooms serving children from the age of 4–7 years. It assesses the nature and quality of instruction as well as the social climate and management of the classroom. Two separate scales assess the degree to which constructivist, child-centered and the degree to which didactic, teachercentered instructional practices are implemented. Findings indicate that the measure produced reliable scores and meaningful, predictable associations were found between scores on the observation measure, on the one hand, and teachers’ self-reported practices, teaching goals, relationships with children, and perceptions of children’s ability to be self-directed learners, on the other. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. Thesis Directed by: Professor Sylvia Rosenfield Department of Counseling and Personnel Services University of Maryland, College Park The present study serves as an examination and documentation of referral and placement outcomes of English Language Learner (ELL) cases in Instructional Consultation (IC) Teams schools. Archival data from 838 cases (12% of which were ELL cases) within five mid-Atlantic public school districts implementing IC Teams were analyzed for outcomes using logistic regression. Results included statistically significant differences in ELL versus non-ELL student initial team referral (IC or other prereferral intervention team) and ultimate IEP Team referrals. Initial referral concerns also differed significantly between ELL and non-ELL students. IC Teams were found to be more effective than existing prereferral intervention teams in decreasing the special education referrals of ELL and non-ELL students. The results of the present study serve as a foundation for future research in the areas of at-risk ELL students and their referrals to prereferral intervention teams and special education. A review of solution strategies suggests that the following musical techniques proved to be helpful for increasing student recall because the songs helped with phonemic training, mnemonics, setting desired skills to familiar tunes, and linking connection to cultural themes.
