...2. Applied research has a practical problem-solving emphasis. Applied research applies research to discovering solutions for immediate problems or opportunities. Pure research or basic research is also problem-solving based, but in a different sense. It aims to solve perplexing questions or obtain new knowledge of an experimental or theoretical nature that has little direct or immediate impact on action, performance, or policy decisions. Applied research will find out how compensation (salary or commission) would affect the company revenue. Pure research might study the influence on the sales that pay by commission versus salary. 3. Explanatory research answers the questions of "why" and "how" something happened. It establishes a cause and effect relationship between two variables. Hence, the research explains. For example, the research shows a relationship between the increased presence of police patrols in certain cities versus the reduction of crimes. Predictive research is involved with the forecasting (predicting) of a likelihood of something happening. This research usually begins with, or leading to, finding what will happen, given that some baseline is already known. This research usually involves some form of human behavior decision or condition. For example if we know that teens in intercity schools, aged 13-16, are prone to high dropout rates, predictive research might assess (predict) a relationship between age or gender and not graduating from high school...

...A research done in conformity was conducted by Sherif. He did a lab experiment where he asked participants to watch a non-moving light in a dark room. The light appeared to move when in fact it was a visual illusion. Participants were asked to estimate the movement of the light alone and then in groups of three. He found that when participants were asked to estimate the movement of the light alone there was a variation in answers. However, when they were in groups of three participants changed their answers to give an average of their individual estimates. A criticism of Sherif’s study is that its low in ecological validity, for example the task that participants were asked to do is not a task you would do in everyday life. Therefore we may not be able to generalise these results to real life situations in which people conform to a majority. Another criticism of Sherif’s study is that it raises ethical issues, for example participants were deceived as they were not told the truth about the light not moving. Therefore this can lead to the participants feeling stressed as they try to find out the answer. This would raise another ethical issue as Sherif has not protected his participants from harm therefore this shows that Sherif is valuing his experiment more than his participants. Another criticism to Sherif’s study is that the answer to the task is ambiguous; for example, we don’t know whether the participants conformed to others due to them generally being affected by...

...Cleyder Blanco April 2, 2014 Research method Analysis Survey Here is my question from my survey How you feeling about prostitution? Do you think prostitution should be legalized? Why the people choose to be a prostitute? Most of the answers was similar at all the research that I been funded it is not really change my emphasis because the entire people think the same thing, so almost of the answers was similar, but without that, I got some common reasons. For the first question was really controversy because most of them think that prostitution is like a job where the prostitute can use the body to produce too much money selling they body. But at the same time it is morality wrong. Others think that prostitution is an easy way to find illegal money to support them family. Prostitution never goes away it will be around in one form or another forever. That make me feel like prostitution never goes to have an exactly answers because it have to many complainant to say about it, however, I will spend the rest of my life doing survey and I never going to have the same answer, therefore they may have some common words but not the same sentence about prostitution. To the prostitute prostitution is really hard to talk because all then had been maltreated, and put in this kind of life for to many reasons. The two principal are money and they parents. For the second question most of the people agree with prostitution should be legal because prostitution should never go...

I wanted to know exactly what asthma was and why it caused me to have so much trouble performing the simple task of breathing. I wanted to know how severe asthma can be and if it can even be fatal. Since I am no doctor or physician, I decided to take to the Internet in order to find out more about this disease that has been such a nuisance to me for so long. I started my research by forming research questions about asthma. After that, I went to many online sources to find answers questions. ...the show is all about asking the contestants questions from wide range of topics including sciences and history, it will test the ability of Watson to come up with a precise answer. In order to do this, it is fed all the information it needs to participate in the game. The most important part is the process it takes in giving out the answer and the arguments it accompanies it with. (Loftus, 2009). The Jeopardy game provides a good platform since it involves asking question random questions and expects right answers from the participants. Q.2. Is Watson a good example of computer system intelligence similar to humans? Watson demonstrates a very good example of intelligence similar to that of humans. It is able to accept questions, analyse them, determine what they require and give the correct answer. However, the requirements needed by the computer to come up with the answer is very different from humans. The computer will need to be fed all the information in order to perform effectively. Q.3.Would Watson be useful in consumer services and what should have to achieve this? The ability of Watson to answer any question asked, having fed with the right information, can be very helpful in businesses. Especially in matters relating to customer services. Customers are able to get answers from the various question they may have...

...exam: ▪ Write down their key words, listings, etc, as they are fresh in your mind. Otherwise these ideas may be blocked (or be unavailable) when the time comes to write the later questions. This will reduce "clutching" or panic (anxiety, actually fear which disrupts thoughts). Set up a time schedule to answer each question and to review/edit all questions ▪ If six questions are to be answered in sixty minutes, allow yourself only seven minutes for each ▪ If questions are "weighted", prioritize that into your time allocation for each question ▪ When the time is up for one question, stop writing, leave space, and begin the next question. The incomplete answers can be completed during the review time ▪ Six incomplete answers will usually receive more credit than three, complete ones Read through the questions once and note if you have any choice in answering questions ▪ Pay attention to how the question is phrased, or to the "directives", or words such as "compare", "contrast", "criticize", etc. See their definitions in "Essay terms" ▪ Answers will come to mind immediately for some questions Before attempting to answer a question, put it in your own words ▪ Now compare your version with the original. Do they mean the same thing? If they don't, you've misread the question. You'll be surprised how often they don't agree. Think before you write: Make a brief outline for each question Number the items in the order you will...

...Questionnaire design This Advice Sheet introduces you to the some of the basics of designing a good questionnaire. Many research projects and dissertations demand the collection of primary data from individuals. Questionnaires are often the best way of gathering such information and views. However, a badly designed questionnaire may get only unusable responses or none at all. This Advice Sheet offers guidance on avoiding the pitfalls, and ensuring a successful result. What do you want to know? 1 Maximise success …. 1 Who to ask …. 1 Clear instructions …. 2 Questions …. 2 Order & layout …. 3 Email vs Print .... 3 Piloting …. 4 Further reading …. 4 What do you want to know? Before you even write the first question, it is important that you have a very clear idea about what you want your questionnaire to achieve. Write down your research goals, and think about what information you need to elicit from respondents to meet those goals. Think also about how you are going to analyse each question to get the results you need. Remember there is a difference between things you need to know, and those it would be nice to know. Eliminate unnecessary lines of questioning at the planning stage. Maximise your chances of success The aim of questionnaire design is to a) get as many responses as you can that are b) usable and accurate. To maximise your response rate: • Give your questionnaire a short and meaningful title • Keep the questionnaire as short and succinct as possible • Offer...

...Based on the results of my experience, 60% of my answers were similar to how the majority of the people chose their answers. I chose objectively for questions that involved factual answers (No Googling!) but I was more influenced by the psychological prospects of the choices in the questions that involved gambling and lottery. I am also more of a risk taker and I think that prompted me to make certain choices which other people would have normally avoided. For example, in questions 7 & 8, I answered the questions objectively because I couldn’t imagine a tree that is taller than either 1200 feet or even 400 feet. Thus, while people would have normally provided their responses based on “anchoring”, and chose that the tallest redwood tree would be more than 400 feet (because they were given the value of 1200 feet in the previous question), I went about it objectively to choose the value of less than 400 feet. For question 9 though, I chose “Kristen is a bank teller and a liberal Democrat” as I was influenced by the representativeness heuristic because the information in the question led me to believe that Kristen’s portrayal was more like that of a conventional liberal Democrat than of a typical banker. So I considered this choice to be more reasonable even though the probability of...

...getting ahead in the world of television news. Today, there is a very slow, if any, gain in the numbers of women who succeed. There are many questions surrounding the subject of women in television news, and I will attempt to answer relevant ones in this paper. How have the women that actually make it to the top and succeed as anchorwomen, done it? What does it take to make it? Why do those few endure it/enjoy it? Why has it been and still is difficult for women? What are the expectations of women in the field, as opposed to the expectations of men? I am interested in this topic because I once aspired to become a television broadcaster. I still have inspiration in me, but not quite as much due to the negative and discouraging aspects I have heard about in classes and in the media. I am not sure that I could be happy in a career such as this, and I know there are great difficulties in "making it" in this profession. I have read about the incredible ambition of successful females in television news, and it seems like it takes a special kind of passion to want to keep up in the business. I kept my questions in mind when gathering research material. While focusing on the key questions, I was able to find information that led me to form answers to them. Christine Craft's biography told of her individual experience of being fired on the basis of her looks and her age. I realized from reading her story that she had a "nose for news", a passion for telling it to the...
