...Reflections on Individual Assignment 1 This document provides examples of student critiques prepared for individual assignment 1. I have selected examples of satisfactory and unsatisfactory critiques supplemented by some comments. Hopefully this will assist in preparing for the second individual assignment and the final exam. 1. Literature review (objectives and motives) Satisfactory critique Critique: Jones and Solomon (2010) do not explicitly mention the aim of their research, but rather refer to the nature of the research. This is not seen as a weak point as the authors make use of grounded theory in their study. The authors do however identify their motivation of conducting this research quite well by stating: “However, to our knowledge, there has been little research (...)” (pp. 21). Furthermore, the authors link their motives to prior research by stating that there has been a lack of interview-based work in prior research (Ball et al, 2000; Deegan et al, 2006; O’Dwyer and Owen, 2005). I do see this link as a strong point in contrast to the objective of this article. The objective of this article is not clearly formulated. The authors mention: “We address the fundamental question on (...)” (p.21). However, immediately afterwards they state: “In addition, we shed light on several important questions such as (...)” (p.21). These additions are not related to previously identified questions by the authors but to the themes that derived from the interviews in this study. Therefore...

...January 17, 2014 The propose for writing this paper is to critique the article “reflecting on practice: using journals in higher and continuing education”. The study was presented by Columbia University's Computer Technology program in Continuing Education. The author of this article is Arthur M. Langer and it was published in 2002 in Columbian University. My critique based on the five elements which are research question and problems, literature review, methodology, results and findings, discussion. After I read entire article carefully I identified how the article was organized. What author’s thought patterns, his way of thinking, evaluated Strengths and Weaknesses, how can findings be used in practice? This article explained that students should use journals in their studies for their researches. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of learning journals as vehicles for encouraging critical reflection among non-traditional students and to compare variances with studies among traditional students. An objective of the study was to understand how students in a technical computer class reacted to the requirements for learning journals. Qualitative method focused on whether learning journals show to be an effective teaching tool in science-based, adult learning. The purpose of this article critique is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses points for the components of the Langer’ article Langer (2002). Research Question, Conceptual Foundation, Methodology—data collection...

...Running head: Research Critique, Part 1 Research Critique, Part 1 Grand Canyon University: NRS-433V Introduction to Nursing Research May 20, 2012 Research Critique, Part 1 Advanced Care Planning (ACP) is a huge part of healthcare. Dying is a part of life, but that doesn’t make the subject any less scary. Just because healthcare professionals handle end of life issues on a regular basis, doesn’t mean that they are immune to the sensitivities of the topic. End-of-life decision making is the process that healthcare providers, patients, and patients’ families go through when considering what treatments will or will not be used to treat a life-threatening illness. (Thelen, 2005) Many nurses who deal with death and decision making burn out. Hospice staff, because of their work with the terminally ill, are considered a high-risk group for burnout. Often, the reason behind the decision to leave or take a sabbatical from hospice work is that the staff member reached the limits of his or her capacity to care and “couldn’t take it anymore.” (Keidel, 2002) A qualitative study done, on anticipating emotion, related to ACP, was chosen to be critiqued, due to this highly sensitive topic in the healthcare industry. The subject this study was critiqued on, were, the problem statement, purpose and research question, literature review, and conceptual/theoretical framework. The clinical problem, addressed, is that end of life discussions between healthcare professionals and clients...

...Running Head: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ARTICLE CRITIQUE Qualitative Research Article Critique Corey J. Ivany (MUN ID#: 009435660) Education 6100 Memorial University of Newfoundland Abstract This paper is an academic critique of a qualitative research article written by Karen Dorgan (2004) entitled: A Year in the Life of an Elementary School: One School’s Experiences in Meeting New Mathematics Standards. Throughout the course of the 1999-2000 school year, Dorgan observed and interviewed teachers who were members of the faculty of an economically and racially diverse elementary school in Virginia. The purpose behind the case study was to examine how the changes in the state Standards of Learning would effect pedagogical decision making, teaching and learning, and methods of instruction and evaluation. My evaluation/critique of this article is an holistic interpretation of the study as an example of a qualitative research project and is based on my understandings of this type of study from my involvement in Education 6100: Research and Design Methods from Memorial University of Newfoundland. My concern is to develop a systematic and analytical discussion based around the degree to which this case study exemplifies the characteristics of qualitative research. Qualitative Research Article Critique In her article A Year in the Life of an Elementary School: One School’s Experiences in Meeting New Mathematics Standards, Karen Dorgan (2004)...

...The article I chose was a study on print related practices in low-income Latino homes related to school readiness of preschoolers. Parent-child interactions are a huge part in the development of oral language and learning how to read. There have been many studies done in order to find effective ways of developing literacy in diverse areas around the United States (Schick, pg. 4, 2015). In recent research done with low-income Latino families they have found that they have fewer books in their homes and don’t visit libraries as often (4). However, in these past research studies they compared the results to European and American families. Therefore, for this study they just took a look at different Latino families and their child’s reading readiness....

...Qualitative Nursing Research Critique Cherie L. Ben Melanie McKnight, Annie Williams NUR 515 Nursing Research August 15, 2015 Professor Susan Steele- Moses Qualitative Nursing Research Critique Qualitative nursing research, has been building momentum in the health care arena for some time now. Qualitative nursing research is valuable to knowledge related to evidenced based practice. For instance, human responses are studied and questions related to potential or actual health problems or diseases are answered. Concepts and Phenomenon are studied and the results are interpretive. Qualitative nursing research is valuable but because outcomes and data aren’t precisely measured, as in quantitative research, critiques are more frequent. “There is a growing body of research to support the view that health care providers are biased in their approach to caring for obese patients” (Creel, 2012). I am providing a qualitative nursing research critique on the article, “Stigmatization of Overweight Patients by Nurses”. Purpose and Problem Identification The focus and purpose of this qualitative nursing research study is to investigate and explore the phenomenon of the stigmatization of overweight patients by their nurses or the nursing staff. The purpose of this qualitative nursing research study is clearly stated in the abstract and under the purpose subheading within the article. The problems that lead to the production of this article was that the increasing number...

...Introduction According to Farrel, Inturrisi, Bergman, Kenner & Howell (2003), the preterm infant is not only different from the full term newborn based on size. There are various physiological limitations faced by preterm infants that arise due to immaturity in most of its systems. The immaturity of such systems forces the preterm infant to rely upon the nursing interventions and medical technologies for survival before they reach the desired maturity. It is unfortunate that preterm infants are vulnerable during growth because of the small energy reserves. Compared to the full term infant they need much more energy for the physiologic growth and other forms of development. Energy expenditure is part of energy balance and the summation of different...

...CRISIS COMMUNICATION The BP Oil Spill Abstract: The subject of my critique is regarding the analysis of British Petroleum's public relations strategy and its portrayal in the media during the 'Deepwater Horizon' oil spill that occurred on April 20, 2010. The author is anonymous and has laid out the importance of good communication during major crises. He gives examples of the Johnson & Johnson Tylenol product tampering and the Exxon Valdez oil spill and then compares them with the BP Oil Spill. He points out well the inadequacies of the BP's public relations team and how scholars address the importance of understanding media relations, framing and the public emotional response. The author has presented many examples of scholars' thoughts but according to me falls short of discussions and the perception of the public, their emotions and the manner in which they (the public ) could be affected during such huge crises and thus the importance of public relationsof organizations from the normal public perspective. The public who invests in such organizations shouldn't feel that they are being fooled/cheated. Further during his research the author has presented the importance of pre-crisis phase and how to analyze each crisis situation. The Critique: In the point of 'Public perception, framing and media relations' the author focuses on audience-centered perspective in crisis situations. Here I personally acknowledge the point made by Jim and Pang which explains that understanding...

...Qualitative Critique Paper Neetaka Dickens University of Phoenix Analysis of Research Reports NUR/518 July 28, 2014 Veta Massey Qualitative Critique The purpose of the paper is analyze and critique the qualitative nursing research study related to a current nursing issue. A review of the strengths and weaknesses of this study and appropriateness of the studies for the clinical issue is included. While there is an impact of death on family members, there has been little research documenting the reactions and responses of our nurses. A Curtain of Protection Grief is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; or painful regret“(Merriam-Webster,2014). Every person in the world has suffered from grief at one point or another in their life, whether it was caused by the loss of a loved one or another reason it has been felt by them. Different people express grief in different ways; it can often bring people together as well as divide them. This is the same for our nurses. One of the nursing functions of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse is providing care for terminally-ill patients and assists them towards a peaceful death. However, in helping those patients to approach a peaceful death in an intensive care unit, nurses deal with many difficulties such as communicating bad news, counseling the persons’ families, and facilitating a peaceful death when time is limited. ICU nurses frequently face patients’...
