Induction Training at Delphi – TVS
Introduction:
Delphi TVS is a leading manufacturer of Fuel injection equipment and it is located in Sriperambudur, near Chennai. Being a manufacturer plant, they recruit people with engineer back ground and provide them with training as part of induction for a year. Fresh employees are tagged as “Graduate Engineer Trainee” and they need to successfully complete their one year induction program before getting promoted to “Engineer”.
Now let us go through the complete structure of induction program that is practiced in this company
Recruitment Procedure:
Certain procedures followed by the company while recruiting people from Campus
1. Campus Selection: List of colleges are selected which is situated in various part of Tamil Nadu
2. Recruiting Team: HR Recruiting team, Technical Interview team (especially from R&D or Quality department) and HR Manager for HR Interview
3. Company Culture: Projecting TVS brand and Culture which is well established than brand Delphi
Recruitment process has three stages: Written Test, Interview and Verification
Below diagram explains the stages in detail Overview of Induction Program:

Classroom Training phase of induction goes on for four months. It includes technical knowledge about the product (FIP), Practical learning of operating various machines to outdoor training like Swimming, Team building activity. Let us have a look at some of the important session that is provided to build both technical skills as well as interpersonal skills.
Phase 1 can be classified in to three sections Each section includes various activities, Lectures, visits etc. It was total of 100 days of Training program. Major reason for such a long classroom training session is to make the transition process from College life to corporate life smooth.
Let us now discuss in detail about each section of the training program
Inside Classroom Training:
Inside classroom training can be classified in to four: Product Knowledge, Interpersonal Skill, SPC and Departmental Knowledge.
Below flowchart mentions some of the program that are part of the training program

Training Objective
Product Knowledge 3 days of Training about the working of FIP and Dismantling and Assembly of product
Statistical Process Control Training to learn about the tool that is widely used in the organization. Duration is 2 days which includes exercise on real data
Departmental Function General Manager of each department gives insight about their department function
Interpersonal Skill Training
Communication Skill Training is mostly to teach people how to communicate with their colleague and proper way to mail. Duration is 4 days
Goal Setting Program It happens in two phase, one at beginning and other at end. The program aims at providing clear picture of how to set clear goals that are achievable
Leisure Time Management The program aims at teaching work life balance and activity that can be practiced during Leisure time
Leadership Skill It is a 3 day program which includes several activity to bring out the leadership skill of an individual

Each section was taken by people who are specialist in that particular domain. With classroom kind of activity, transition is smooth and with each section having several exercises it was interactive and lively.
Total duration of this training is around 45 days
Practical Training:
Practical Training goes on for around 50 days. It is generally classified in to two: Lab training (30 days) and Department visit (20 days)
Now let us discuss both the training in detail Outside Classroom Training:
There are three training: Out bound training, Swimming and Yoga. Swimming and Yoga are additional session that happens simultaneously with other sessions. Yoga is scheduled to handle the stress that one may face after getting involved in the job

1. Main Objective: To show the importance of Team Work among 30 Graduate Engineer Trainee recruited from various college
2. 3 Day program happens at a resort near Pondicherry
3. Includes various program to work as team
Report Submission:
Phase 1 completes with a presentation in front of HR Head about the training and its learning. Department allocation is done after the presentation. Department is allotted based on following
1. Choice given by candidate during interview (HR Round)
2. Interest of candidate during first phase of training
3. Performance during first phase training
Phase 1 ends with HR Manager introducing candidate to their respective department and his head under whom he need to work for rest two phase of Induction.
Next Section explains the remaining two phase of Induction training: On the job training and Project work

 Take up a project on our own under the guidance of Mentor
 Final review in front of HR head, Department Head, Mentor and all related department head
 Phase 3 ends with Promotion as “Engineer” Induction Training at Ashok Leyland
Introduction:
Ashok Leyland is one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in India. They have their manufacturing facility at five locations. Ashok Leyland recruits fresh candidates from selected engineering colleges across India. Induction training duration is generally of one year. Structure of the program is generally similar to the Delphi TVS induction which consists of three phase. Let us discuss in detail about the Ashok Leyland recruitment and Induction procedure in detail.
Recruitment Procedure:
Ashok Leyland recruitment procedure is simple and direct. It consists of three stages. Some points about the recruitment procedure
1. Written test is a short duration test that tests accuracy and speed in which an individual can solve questions
2. Interview panel generally consists of executives from R&D and Service department
3. Candidates are asked for department of their interest
Induction Training: Similar to Delphi TVS, Duration of Induction in Ashok Leyland is 1 year which is splitted in to four phase (second phase is sub divided in to two). The below diagram shows the duration of each phase
Now let us see each phase in detail

Basic training consists of classroom training, lab training, plant visits and driving. Ashok Leyland has a separate center “Management development center” in its hosur manufacturing facility for training the new canditates.
Some of the classroom training are shown below

Other classroom training includes session on their ISO certification, TQM, Quality principles etc.
Lab Training: Candidates are trained to assemble and dismantle various parts of the vehicle on their own. Duration of this training is 2 weeks. This gives them a clear picture about the product.
Plant Visit:
1. Centre – Candidates are asked to visit a service centre that provides after sales service for the vehicle. They have to learn the functions of the service centre and also the products sold there. Duration of this program is 15 days
2. Manufacturing plant visit – Ashok Leyland has two plants H1, H2 in Hosur and one in Ennore, Chennai. Employees are asked to visit these plants to have an idea about the technology used in these plants
Driving Classes:
1. One of the initial requirement for any candidate who are joining Ashok Leyland is to possess a valid driving license
2. Adding to that heavy vehicle license is also required during their course of employment at Ashok Leyland
3. In order to facilitate this provision, Ashok Leyland Provides 7 days Driving classes in commercial vehicle and help its employee to get Heavy vehicle license
These are the four various types of training that are provided to the candidates in the first four month of induction.

Phase 2A – Manufacturing Department:
Candidates after successful phase 1 induction will be posted in Pant nagar (Uttrakhand) manufacturing facility in the Production department for next two months. Here he is trained in all kind of work – Operator, Supervisor and manager.
Phase 2B – Supply Chain Management:
After 2 Months in manufacturing department, they will be posted in SCM Department.
1. Each candidate will be assigned to one supplier
2. They have to follow up with the supplier for the regular dispatch of material as per company requirement
3. Candidates working location would be the supplier location for the three months of this phase

After three phase of Induction, Candidate will be posted in the department as requested by them. After the induction, they will be promoted to “Assistant Manager”.
