Rust Play Review Essay

In late February, I had the extreme pleasure of attending a play put on by my own university and performed by some of my own classmates. The play itself is not very well-known as it was performed twice before it came to Duquesne University, but that did not stop me from enjoying it all the same. F.J. Hartland’s play, Rust, has stuck out in mind because of the well-written humor, casting choices, and stage design. To begin with, the play is a combination of drama and comedy, which is made quite apparent through the setting of throughout the performance: 1980’s Pittsburgh during the deindustrialization of the area’s prominent steel industry. It was at this time that many of the workers of Pittsburgh were without a job and could not provide for their families. The play revolves around such a family of Slovak descent and the effects the so-called “Rust Belt” had on their lives. …show more content…
As previously stated, the audience was at ground level with the players, making the space all the more intimate. That being said, there was a particular scene in which the father, Marek, has just realized that his gay son had just been physically assaulted by some men that frequent the bar Marek patronizes. Upon learning this, he rushes over to the bar, which is just a different area of the stage. It was a rather small section of the stage, but honestly, it made for a believable bar counter with shelves, tables, etc. It was in this scene that Marek was filled with rage (one of the few moments in the play that was truly dramatic) as he was questioning the bartender about potential suspects. Then, the actor actually looked out into the audience, eyes filled with sheer wrath, and yelled out if any of us were the ones that hurt his son. I honestly believed that the actor was about to interact with the audience members, which gave me a little apprehension, but then the bartender reeled him back into their own

True Detective

...Sawall 1 Evonna Sawall Professor Kaefer English 1A 12 April 2014 Evaluation Essay: True Detective             True Detective is an extraordinary TV series, written by Nic Pizzolatto, about two Louisiana State Police detectives investigating a series of ritualistic murders. Pizzolatto has created a series beyond brilliant. The amazing structure, impeccable writing, marvelous acting, and frame story have made True Detective an immediate classic. At the end of each episode you will be on the edge of your seat craving another hour. True Detective is based on two investigators, one of them is a typical overconfident investigator, Woody Harrleson, and the other is an intellectual, nihilistic man, Matthew McConaughey. This series alternates between 1995, when detectives Martin Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey) start working a case together, and 2012, when the two detectives work a new case that has strong similarities to the case in 1995. State internal affairs detectives are interviewing both men separately and believe that Rust may have committed the old crime, new crime or both. Rust and Marty investigate a ritualistic murder in rural Louisiana. As they attempt to uncover leads in this disturbing case, their own lives intersect in fascinating, yet explosive ways. Though the investigation itself is interesting, the interpersonal behavior of the obsessive and frequently conflicting lead characters makes this drama seem so much fresher than all other criminal television...

Does the Consumer Define the Brand or the Brand Define the Consumer?

...One of the most important things to understand about a brand is that its value is highly individualized. A customer might grow tired of a brand, or more enamored [sic], independent of how other customers are responding to it. (Rust R.T et all, 2004).In this essay, there will be an analysis of how the consumer affects a brand and how the brands try their best in order to get consumers to buy their products and how that defines the consumers themselves. However, firstly what is a brand? It appears that ‘each expert comes up with his or her own definition of brand or nuances of definition’ (Mishra P, 2012). One view is that ‘a brand name is nothing more or less than sum of all the mental connections people have around it’ (Jacoby J et all, 1997) but the general definition is a unique design, sign, symbol, word or a combination of these, employed in creating an image that identifies a product that differentiates it from its competitors (Business Dictionary). Consumers define brands but brands also define consumers. When people see certain brands, they associate it with specific statuses or lifestyles. A study showed that when shown a video of a person and asked for their first impressions. Their judgements of qualities such as friendliness and assertiveness differed depending on whether the video depicted the person with expensive material possessions or not. People use materials/ brands to express who they are and construct a sense of who they would like to be (Dittmar H, 2004)...

Television Review

...Sean Morris ENGL 110 / 25696 TV Review Essay Audience Statement This review would probably be found in an entertainment tabloid like People magazine. It would be more for people solely focused on the entertainment aspect of the movie, like the plot and the actors’ performances, rather than any implied meanings or ‘academic’ aspects of the series. It would also be targeted to individuals like myself who typically don’t watch TV and just binge-watch a series when it becomes available, but want a ‘straight to the point’ review that highlights the good and bad things of a series. Matthew’s McConnaissance Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson may not be your first choice for a gritty, noir-inspired detective series, but after watching the series it would be hard to pick anyone better for their roles. In True Detective, Harrelson is Marty Hart, a family man and run-of-the-mill cop that acts like your usual pension driven civil servant, while McConaughey plays the pensive, but condescending new partner, Rust Cole. Their goal is typical for the genre: find a murderer terrorizing this sleepy town in Louisiana. The biggest draw of the series is easily the two main actors’ performances. Now an Academy Award winner, McConaughey shows exactly how far he’s come in the last ten years from his usual Hollywood romantic comedy. Instead of the typical pretty boy, he plays an intelligent and thoughtful, but broken detective whose gaunt frame and disheveled look represent the...

Therefore, in order to meet the competitiveness of the environment, recognizing core competencies needed by the organizations in its employees is essential as it promotes customer value on the external aspect and allows creation of new business through innovation on the internal aspect (Nankervis et al 2011). As such, it’s no surprise that the same job of past and present now has very different scope of duties. Cooper, Robertson & Tinline (2003) affirm...

Townley and Foucault

...® Acodemy of Management Heview 1993, Vol. 18, No. 3. 518-545. FOUCAULT. POWER/KNOWLEDGE. AND ITS RELEVANCE FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT BARBARA TOWNLEY The University of Alberta Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault. I argue that human resource management (HRM) may be best understood as a discourse and set of practices that attempt to reduce the indeterminacy involved in the employment contract. Here I reread HRM practices from a Foucauldian power-knowledge perspective and suggest that this provides an avenue to reorient contemporary, historical, and comparative analyses of the area. A glimpse at human resource management (HRM) texts would seem to give light to a comment by Beer, Spector, Lawrence, Mills, and Walton (1984) that HRM is a series of seemingly disjointed activities. This notion echoes an earlier view of Baldamus (1961: 347) that what is encompassed by HRM's subject matter is "anything from supervision, incentives and profit sharing to machine-paced production, methods of training and employee selection." Often this heterogeneity is excused in terms of HRM's reflecting the ad hoc and reactive nature of its origins (Jacoby, 1985; Niven, 1967; Ozanne, 1967). What the heterogeneity of HRM highlights, however, is the importance of an organizing principle, or analytical focus, as opposed to common sense description, which gives HRM practices a theoretical coherence. HRM's heterogeneity stresses the importance of an order "that turns a set of bits, which have limited...
