Sad Music Make You Sad

...Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts 2012, Vol. 6, No. 3, 204 –213 © 2012 American Psychological Association 1931-3896/12/$12.00 DOI: 10.1037/a0026937 Can Sad Music Really Make You Sad? Indirect Measures of Affective States Induced by Music and Autobiographical Memories Jonna K. Vuoskoski and Tuomas Eerola University of Jyvaskyla ¨ ¨ The present study addressed music’s disputed ability to induce genuine sadness in listeners by investigating whether listening to sad music can induce sadness-related effects on memory and judgment. Related aims were to explore how the different mechanisms of music-induced emotions are involved in sadness induced by familiar, self-selected music and unfamiliar, experimenter-selected music, and whether the susceptibility to music-induced sadness is associated with trait empathy. One hundred twenty participants were randomly assigned into four conditions with different tasks: listening to unfamiliar sad or neutral music, or to self-selected sad music, or recalling a sad autobiographical event and writing about it. The induced affective states were measured indirectly using a word recall task and a judgment task where participants rated the emotions expressed by pictures depicting facial expressions. The results indicate that listening to sad music can indeed induce changes in emotion-related memory and judgment. However, this effect depends, to some extent, on the music’s relevance to the listener, as well as on the personality...

Topic 1. How Can Events Contribute to Destination Image Enhancement. Give Examples.

...Festivals and events are seen as a tool for raising awareness and as a catalyst in promoting a favourable destination image to potential tourists (Lertputtarak, 2012). The image of a destination can be enhanced by the success of an event (Baloglu & McCleary, 1999). In the words of “Lawson & Baud Bovy (1977), the concept of destination image is defined as the expression of all objective knowledge, prejudices, imagination and emotional thoughts of an individual or group about a particular location” (Dominique & Lopes, 2011, p. 307). Additionally, “other authors define the image as the sum of all beliefs, ideas and impressions that people associate with a destination (Crompton, 1979; Kotler, Haider & Rein, 1993)” (Dominique & Lopes, 2011, p. 307). This paper discusses the impact of events on destination image enhancement. Destination image is formed from several sources of information. Event information sources are the forces which influence the forming of perceptions and evaluations of a region’s characteristics. It will be argued, using the specific example of the ‘Exit’ event staged in 2000, that public exposure through extensive media coverage and word of mouth communications are the main elements that contribute to a positive destination image. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated how hosting events present an opportunity for marketers, as part of their strategy, to help position their destination and enhance their global image. As illustrated by the ‘Mardi Gras’ event staged...

Sad and Sadistic

...The word “father” appears commonly on first-grade spelling quizzes due to its simplicity of spelling; however, it holds startlingly many different meanings under its simple spelling. Most young-aged daughters characterize a father as the protector of their family who they can always rely on, a role model whom she gets inspiration from, and a counselor who provides wise guidance for her life. The Bible commands fathers to “Train up a child in the way he should go” and to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Also, a British Poet George Herbert once said, “One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.” Absence of father, in other words, means insufficient guidance, security, and love in a young child’s life. Grievously, 36.7% of children around the world are fatherless children. Factors like divorce, disease, accident, and work act as causes of absence of a father, which affects children in areas of self-esteem, relationship, education, and crime. One of the best-known causes for absence of a father is divorce. The divorce rate of societies these days is drastically increasing and is reaching a height that was never reached before. The three countries with the top divorce rate are Belarus, United States, and Sweden; and they record divorce rates of 52.9%, 54.8%, and 54.9% respectively. There are multifarious reasons why a couple decides on a divorce. The most significant cause of the divorce is lack of communication between spouses. Failure to communicate...

The Happiest Sad Story

...When asked about the author of a book, rather than the book itself, nobody seems to know whom you are talking about. Authors are not considered celebrities when it comes to the scale of how famous they are. However, John Green captured the minds of a diverse group of people that included teenagers, adults, and kids old enough to understand his book, The Fault in Our Stars. Many people had read his other books including, but not limited to, An Abundance of Katherines and Looking For Alaska. Once people started reading TFIOS, or The Fault in Our Stars, word got around about all of the tears shed, goose bumps felt, and smiles captured with this read. Through this fictional book, Green’s inspiration is based entirely on a real life story. Hazel is a fictional character and in many ways, completely different from Green’s friend who died of cancer in August 2010 when she was 16. Green’s friend, Esther, meaning “Star” in Persian, had the empathy of a counselor but the spunky teenage way that all young adults should have. Green took that and formed Hazel Grace Lancaster’s character, who was not a part of the book at the time of his friendship, because the story was extremely different prior to Esther passing away. Esther loved reading, and Green wrote books. Green was intrigued to know Esther and her family, so they spent time and took on the internet together. Their relationship grew stronger as they got closer and Esther got more sick. She showed Green that dying is inevitable...

Sad Story

...Most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language — so the argument runs — must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes. Now, it is clear that the decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes: it is not due simply to the bad influence of this or that individual writer. But an effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely. A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the process is reversible. Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets rid of these...

...Chapter I Introduction 1.1 Background of the Study A clearance system has been a significant part in any institution. It is a tool to control the access to any resources or services available for use to create a general security for that institution. In an educational institution, a clearance signifies that a student is cleared from all his requirements and liabilities so that he can proceed to the next step on any transaction or process that he or she is undertaking. Student clearance is often used during the end of a school year or semester to verify if the student has paid all his or her fines and submitted all requirements. This prevents problems that might occur due to the unsettled school requirements. The AMA Computer College General Santos City is a small privately owned school that offers four courses in computer and information technology. It is a branch of the AMA Computer University and is located in J.P Laurel Avenue, General Santos City. Being a member of the AMA Education System, the school uses the same system as that of the main campuses. Although having a computerized system, it does not have an integrated student clearance system. The school currently uses a manual clearance system which involves a clearance form printed on paper that is then signed by authorized school personnel. Students are required to approach each personnel to check for any requirements not cleared. A big part of it comes from the Student Council and some departments of the school...

Sad Ending/Regret

...I was suddenly awakened in the middle of night. As I glanced around there was no one except me,laying on an uncomfortable bed.Slowly,I got down from my bed and tiptoed to the window.A slight of cool breeze whipped to my ears.Dead leaves rattled in the wind. There was a stony prickling silence except for the eerie sound of chilly wind howling in the air.Goosebumps sprouted on my skin all over my frail body.A sliver of moonlight glimmered through the wind, slicing my pallid face.Slowly,I swept my dry face and sighed heavily.I had same dream that haunted me for years .A streak of remorse jabbed into my soul.A purged of guilt poured deep into my heart.I had a bad memory. The memory was glistening trough my luminous intriguing dark eyes. Karakura Town was exceptionally blissful on that day.The sun shone brightly through foliage of hazel maple trees lining the road and puffy clouds briskly skimmed the sky.High in the air, avian were fluttering in the formation of chilly wind, spiraling and squawing. From far,I could see de luxe luxurious majestic ship sailed into the harbor.Kyllie ,my best friend enthusiastically waving towards Luke (my fiancée) and I .We were invited by Kyllie to celebrate her grand birthday party at her imposing picturesque manor on Hayaki Island. ...1. What are the benefits of trading in Index Futures compared to any other security? Ans-An investor can trade the ‘entire stock market’ by buying index futures instead of buying individual securities with the efficiency of a mutual fund. The advantages of trading in Index Futures are: * The contracts are highly liquid * Index Futures provide higher leverage than any other stocks * It requires low initial capital requirement * It has lower risk than buying and holding stocks * It is just as easy to trade the short side as the long side * Only have to study one index instead of 100s of stock 2. What is the difference between open interest and volume? Ans-In the options market, two measurements describe the liquidity and activity of option contracts. Volume is the amount of contracts traded in a given period, and open interest is the number of open option contracts. Volume Trading volume is the number of option contracts being exchanged between buyers and sellers, and it measures the activity of options contracts. For example, assume the trading volume in call option ABC with a strike price of $55 and an expiration date in three weeks did not trade any contracts for a specified day. Therefore, the trading volume is 0. However, the next day, an investor buys 15 call option contracts and a market maker sells 15 call option contracts. The trading volume for that particular day is 15. Open Interest Open interest is the number of option contracts...

Graduation: a Sad Truth

...It is already March. Its the month for graduation. It is an event for many fourth year college students that will serve as a culmination for their four years stay in college. Now, they can finally say to the world that they make it. For THEM, it is an event worth celebrating. However for me, it is not. Yes, it is March. I am also a fourth year college student. But what sets me apart from other fourth year college student is that I cannot graduate this March. Sad, right? I guess it is what I am feeling right now. I feel sad not for my self but for my parents. I disappointed them. I failed them. It is already hurting me hearing things about my failure. But how about my parents? Do they feel the same way? I guess not.The degree of hurt they are going through right now is far greater than what I am feeling right now.Of course, they are parents. They want what's best for their children and what would make them happy. I have waited for this day to come. I want both of my parents to see me marching the stage as I receive my diploma. From my elementary to my high school graduation, I was with my mother. My father could not make it because he still had to finish his 9-months contract. This year could be a great year. My father is here. Everything seems so right except that, I won't graduate this March. How unfortunate! When can I move on from this situation I'm into right now? When can I finally forgive myself and my MAS teacher who failed me? These questions I still...

Sad Analysis and Design

...2. Existing system analysis 2.1 About the Existing system Physical security describes measures that are designed to deny access to unauthorized personnel (including attackers or even accidental intruders) from physically accessing a building, facility, resource, or stored information; and guidance on how to design structures to resist potentially hostile acts.[1] Physical security can be as simple as a locked door or as elaborate as multiple layers of barriers, armed security guards and guardhouse placement.[2] Modern security involves a variety of systems, such as CCTV, Access Control systems, security fences, building management, fire detectors and more. These systems are operated separately, providing security personnel with a partial and isolated perspective that is very much dependant on the capabilities of the security operator. When securing a single small-scale facility, using these separate systems may be sufficient. However, securing mid-to-large scale facilities, such as airports, or multiple facilities, such as a network of train stations – requires a unified perspective. 2.2 Drawbacks of existing system The importance of physical security cannot be understated because it ranges from issues of outright theft of a system or key storage component to intervention with the boot drive during startup. Let's consider several common physical security threat scenarios. Backups and Restoration Security An organization's philosophy of network security can vary greatly. Data...
