...Duluth and Iron Range Railroad executives William McGonagle and Henry Bryan (3M Corporation, 2015). The five men set out looking for the next new product. They wanted to mine a certain type of mineral deposit (Corundum) to use as an adhesive for grinding-wheels. Corundum was in demand as the premier abrasive for grinding wheels, sandpaper and other items to polish, shape, sharpen and decorate items produced by America’s increasingly industrialized economy. This new source of corundum was greeted jubilantly; the only other North American source was in Ontario. The problem – one that surfaced after the company had incurred a large start-up debt – was that the corundum was not there on Lake Superior’s Minnesota north shore. What was there was anorthosite, which is useless as an abrasive (Bishop, 2005). So within a couple of years of its founding, 3M had tons of mineral for sale, no customers and was all but bankrupt. When mining turned out to be of little use and a failed attempt with mineral deposits the company decided to relocate and focus on the manufacturing of a new product, sandpaper. After a few years of struggling the company was able to master sandpaper manufacturing and created a successful supply chain. Several things began happening for the company as it began to grow, first in 1910 one of its investors Lucius Ordway moved the company from Duluth Minnesota to...

...products which it sold in 200 countries, some observers were beginning to ask whether this $14 billion giant with over 88,000 employees could continue its extraordinary innovation-powered growth and expansion. It was a question that the new CEO knew he would have to confront honestly. A lot more than the continued admiration of his Fortune 500 peers depended on it. The Beginning: Foundations of 3M’s Values In 1902, on the basis of a report that deposits of corundum, an abrasive mineral, had been found nearby, five businessmen from Two Harbors, Minnesota invested $1,000 each to form Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M). When it was learned that the mineral deposit was not commercially viable, management decided to manufacture its own sandpaper. But initial manufacturing efforts were not much more successful than its earlier mining performance, and losses continued. Things began to...

...Introduction The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company, or more commonly known and abbreviated as 3M, was found in 1902 in Two Harbors, US. The company started out by mining corundum which was to be used to make sandpaper and grinding wheels but soon seized operations when artificial replacements made the mineral worthless. 3M then turned to producing grinding wheels and sandpaper themselves, and only then were things were then looking up. Having difficulty with quality and marketing its products, the management supported its workers to innovate and develop new products which became its core business. ...Rusty Car From a very young age, I have been fascinated with fixing those things that are broken. Such things as window glass, appliances, and cars, especially cars. Cars have always been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember. I have removed and installed automobile glass, painted cars, refurbished cars, and sold cars. You name it and I have fixed it. I can remember the very first day I ever laid eyes on a car as if it were yesterday. My brother came driving down the long, windy driveway of my family home in Binghamton, New York in what appeared to be a Cadillac Deville. I say what “appeared to be a Cadillac Deville” because the car was so rusty it was hard to tell exactly what it was. But as the car came closer and I saw the blue paint, the shiny hub caps, and rusty door jams a waive of excitement runs all over my body. The beautiful car stops right in front of me and my brother gets out of the car and shouts, “Hey Selim, you want to go for a ride?” I ran and jumped in the car before he even finished his sentence. As we are driving around our neighborhood, I find an old school textbook on the subject of auto body repair. It appears to be from the 1970’s from the way the students were dressed in the pictures inside it and the brown color the pages had turned. Skimming through the pages of the book, I find a chapter on removing rust from the exterior of a vehicle. I remember that I saw the rusted door jams on my brother’s new car and so I ask...

...Question 1: How has 3M’s innovation process evolved since the foundation of the company? Why, if at all, does 3M, known as a ‘hothouse’ of innovation, need to regain its historic closeness to the customer? - The big winners are those who match new, marketable ideas with customers before anyone else can. It takes flexibility and creativity and willingness to risk. - In 1902, 3M was founded as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing by five northern Minnesota entrepreneurs. - Their idea was to extract a mineral from shores of Lake Superior. The partners believed the mineral was corundum, an ideal substitute for garnet, the mineral abrasive found in grinding wheels used by furniture makers. - Each partner put in $1000 and started their venture in Two Harbours hoping to find the mineral and possibly gold. - The initial idea of incorporated first, investigated later. The company sold shares and made plans to start mining before they were even certain they had customers. - When Hermon Cable travelled to Chicago and Deitroit to get the mineral tested with potential customers to find a “fairy satisfactory” results. However, he encouraged the other four partners to go on with the project. - Two years after the founding of the company, 3M sold the first batch of minerals. The product was not corundum but anorthosite, a soft mineral that is inferior to garnet. - Everything was tumbling down from here: the suppliers wanted their money back, the company could not sell shares to...

...Empathy Exercise Gina Krazer PSY/220 December 13, 2011 Mary Jeanell Buck Snap judgments have a negative effect of hindering one’s ability to foster empathy. Often, such judgments can prove to be incorrect about a person, if the time is taken out to get to know him/her. According to Bolt (2004, p. 51), “People are not always what they seem at first glance. This is not to say that negative judgments are always erroneous or that people never contribute to their own failure, merely that life situations are unique and shape people’s actions more than we know.” Almost every individual is guilty of making these snap judgments, including myself. However, I can only think of one person that I presently have negative feelings toward. I am not in the position to say that I know this person well either. She is a coworker of mine and one certain situation influenced my judgments about her. If I found that I was wrong, I would change my opinion and work to change the basic relationship that she and I hold. The circumstances that created this snap judgment occurred during the time I was training her to be a server. On the second day of her training, I had about three tables in a row not leave any tips. Since this does not normally happen, I had suspected that she may have taken the tips, because she was cleaning all of my tables. I had my general manager check the cameras and, as I suspected, she had taken the tips. I confronted her about it and she immediately apologized...

...Functional Analysis A functional analysis is a process of learning about people before intervening in their lives. It is a systematic process for describing difficult behavior, identifying environmental factors and setting events that predict the behavior, and guiding the development of effective and efficient behavior support plans. Three important beliefs underlying a functional analysis are that 1) all behavior that persists serves some purpose, 2) every person is unique, and 3) the best way to help someone change their behavior is to first understand the reasons behind the behavior. This worksheet includes the components of a functional analysis which should be used to develop a positive behavior support plan, if one is needed for a participant. Depending on the person, some items may not need to be addressed. |Clear Description of the Behavior -- What does the challenging behavior look like? What does it sound like? Does it occur in conjunction with other behaviors or | |in isolation? How long does it last? ...and probably always will be. My friends like me for that quality. That’s with friends though. One of my teachers this year constantly harps on my quietness. He says hi to me in the mornings, and it seems to me that he always says something like, “Why do you always sound so timid when I say hi to you? You’re not like that during class. So, why so shy now?” I’ve never legitimately answered him. But, I honestly don’t know why, because I’m only like that in school. Sure, I’m a little soft spoken, and sure I’m not the most talkative in that class, but I’m not unconfident. I’m just naturally soft spoken. I don’t normally raise my hand and blurt out answers, or go up to a teacher and have a random conversation. I don’t like talking in front of people, because I’m afraid of what they think. I’m afraid of being judged. It’s like I’m a whole other person. Frightened, and timid. On the other hand, at home I am a COMPLETELY different person. If my mom was to hear any of my teachers say, “She’s just an angel.”, or “She’s just so sweet.” .My mom probably wouldn’t believe any of them. At home I’m loud and I tend to speak my mind. Plus, my brother and I NEVER get along. I can get along with everyone else in the world but him. Something about him just sets me off. From the time I was born till about the age of five I was, in fact, a perfect little angel. After my brother had been around for a year things started...

...environment. Having many different people working together provides for many perspectives. You learn to work with people who have different views and values than yourself. In a collaborative environment you have the opportunity to discuss in detail how and why others view things the way they do. In a group people are able to speak about questions they have so they may better understand an issue or topic. Understanding where others stand on a subject gives you the opportunity to learn something new or even expand your own point of view. • How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration? In a collaborative environment factors like diversity, attitude, learning, and work style can affect the outcome of a project. People learn in many different ways and in a group you have to work together. If someone has a negative attitude it could cause problems for the group. With so many different backgrounds and race language could be a main factor for some people. For some people English is not their first language so it may be difficult for them to communicate their thoughts. If someone has trouble explaining their ideas can make a collaborative environment hard for them to work to the best of their abilities. • How does personal responsibility influence the work and success of a group? ...to their work and motivator satisfaction and also the satisfaction of lower-order needs at work for some people. This model may apply in many ways for example in a working place, if a person that is every cautious about his hygiene and cleanliness is employed in a place where they have little or no hygiene tolerance this person would not be a able to function properly because of his environment and would most likely not perform as supposed in his work because they would be more focused on trying to clean and make the environment soothe them most of the time instead of carrying out their activities. Another example that this model may apply to competition in offices when workers are not satisfied with their current level at the job or their current salary they tend to have grudges against each other and this would definitely cause disarray in the office place amongst the workers, this situation occurs very often at many work places. My model would state that life changes according to the way you want it to this means that the way you act or behave towards different situations would determine how your life could change easily in certain circumstances people act differently so this can change the way people would see you because of a certain behavior or attitude. An example in which my model can be as follows, usually people think the quiet people are the weak ones and the harmless ones but it’s usually the other way around because when they get really...

...describe the feelings I feel for the people behind the shirts at the clothesline project. Especially women who are beat and abused both physically and sexually, as well as raped and manipulated. I had never heard of the clothesline project before but the more than “traumatizing” experience will leave an imprint upon my brain forever. There are two things I wish to mention at the beginning of my paper. As I was walking to the grande ballroom I was asked by a student ambassador to write something upon a wall that inspires me. I wrote “the look on a person’s face when you do something that makes their day.” And as I was walking around looking at the various t-shirts and stories the thought kept coming back: “what inspires these people to act the way they do.” I couldn’t understand why there were so many Fathers beating mothers and children, Grandfathers and uncles molesting loved ones, and so people who have been murdered. Shirt after shirt “I hate you” and “why did you do this to me” “I was only x amount years old” I was appalled. More so for the fact that these experiences are happening to us right in our neighborhoods. At the beginning I thought this was a traveling exhibit, but it is not. This is happening right in our own community, around us every day. The sad part is the fact that in a lot of cases, the victims didn’t say anything for years at a time, or due to circumstances people didn’t even believe them even police officers and people who are supposed to investigate. I...
