...Edgecombe Avenue Parking: A Need for Additional Legal Parking Spaces XXXXXXX M O’N Edgecombe Avenue Parking: A Need for Additional Legal Parking Spaces With the population of the area growing each year and the removal of a large parking garage, our community is experiencing a parking shortage. The east side of Edgecombe Avenue between 155th & 150th Streets (a one way street) is the only area in the neighborhood that does not allow parking. The purpose of this paper is to show that Community Board 9’s Transportation Committee should approve a change so that parking is permitted on both sides of the street. The current parking restrictions have created an undue burden on the residents, increase the risk to personal safety and with the upcoming Sugar Hill Project parking will become even more problematic in the neighborhood. Parking on the east side of the street was briefly allowed for a few months back in 2009 but was subsequently revoked. The decision was made at a community board meeting that was not fully communicated to the residents. The board should reconsider since several factors have changed in the past two years and not all viewpoints were expressed at the 2009 meeting. Every other street in the surrounding area permits parking on both sides. There are no city ordinances published regarding this issue. Josh Orzeck, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Community Board Liaison stated “In order to make a change, the residents must make a...

...Risk Management & Decision Analysis of Energy Projects Assignment 1: A discussion on the application of Risk Management (RM) in an organization Student: D. Seepersad Date: 18th February 2014 Introduction Risk management is a method that organisations use to address the risks that are involved with their particular activities with the main purpose of achieving their objectives. These objectives form part of the sustainability of the organisation’s activities (Institute of Risk Management 2002). Historically risks were associated with being a negative aspect of an organisation’s activities. However, within recent times, it has been proven that risks also have elements of positive opportunities. There are many reasons in which organisations invest in the Risk Management Process. At many firms, the ability to complete projects on time and within budget with minimum incidents is at the core of their success. For this reason, project management is a vital tool for the company’s survival. A project that experience cost over-runs and extended beyond the scheduled time affects not only the specific project team but also the entire organisation. As reported by Vallee B.H in the Gallup Business Journal (2012), Pricewaterhouse Coopers studied 10,460 projects from 200 companies in 30 countries and found that only 2.5% of these projects were 100% completed. Project overrun was the main contributory factor of this failure. Most projects fail due to inadequate or lack of risk...

...Occupational Health and Safety is an interesting and ever-changing field in our world today. An especially intriguing aspect of this profession is the wide spectrum of opportunities available. With such a versatile certification as, Occupational Health and Safety Officer, the possibilities for my future are exciting. However, I believe that before a career is even considered, one must examine his motivations. I graduated from the University of Yaoundé in 1987 with a Bachelor at Law. Soon after my graduation, I secured a job with Pecten Oil as a Lease hand. With no proper orientation, I was sent to the field and on that same day I was unconsciously rushed to a hospital for an injury incurred on site. This lasted for 08 months after which period I decided that never again should any other worker be injured for lack of safety measures on any worksite. For that reason, when I travelled over to Canada, I took the Construction Safety Officers course. I am presently enrolled as a graduate student in Occupational Health and Safety at the Columbia Southern University. One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning my university degree, despite the fact that my early adulthood pointed in the opposite direction, beginning with my marriage at the age of 24. Throughout the 1990s I lived as one of the "working poor," someone who slipped through the cracks of supposedly historic prosperity. By the age of 25 I was divorced and frustrated with menial, low-paying jobs: clerk, receptionist...

...A Comparison of Theorists Many of the greatest theorists of the past decade have helped form the foundation of knowledge. In this paper, this writer will compare two of the most talented theorists of the time. Abraham Maslow and B.F. Skinner are just two of the many theorists that have formed the organization in today’s classrooms. This paper will address the differences in the theories and the similarities. It will describe how each theory can be implemented in the learning environment of an early childhood classroom. Lastly, it will describe each theory that will be compared supported by research. Comparison of two Theories Operant Behavior Conditioning of Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990) BF Skinner renowned for his theory of Operant Behavior (Maslow and Skinner: n.d.). He is known for, his leadership in the field behavior modification through conditioning. This states that behavior is affected by the consequence that follows the behavior. This is a practice teachers, utilize in the classrooms every day as part of the classroom management process: if the behavior of the child or children is unacceptable, the consequence will not be favorable. If the behavior is positive, the consequences will also be positive. Really, Skinner's theory states that good behavior is reinforced while bad behavior is reprimanded (Maslow and Skinner, n.d.). Ultimately, Skinner believed that in order to change behavior there had to be a positive stimulus to reinforce that behavior. Added...

... October 6th, 2014 RISK ASSESSMENT PLAN Risk Assessment Plan Holding the position of ‘Risk Manager” can be a daunting task. Their role is to advise their company of any potential risks that might exist within the organization, its employees, customers, and even its reputation. A risk managers job tasks depend on the industry in which they work in, and the level at which they are working at. Their major job duties are to identify and assess hazards, put safety plans in place, and determine how to avoid, reduce, or eliminate the risks altogether. That is why in the 1970’s the “Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) established three permanent federal agencies to help with accessing such issues. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to set and enforce standards, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to conduct research on workplace hazards, and the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission (OSHRC) to referee any workplace challenges” (Matthews, P.2011). These three departments were established to set guidelines by which companies both large and small, could follow to minimize the potential risks within the workplace. At my place of employment, Generator Services, we do have a Risk Assessment Plan that observes a safe and healthy work environment for employees, managers, contractors, and visitors. We are a distributor of generators ranging in size from 5 kW (kilowatt)...

...John Dewey’s theory is that children learn by doing. Dewey believed that in teaching the activity was not enough for learning he believed that the children needed to be engaged to benefit from the lesson (Brewer, 2007, p.43). In the video the children were investigating methods of how to use the toys. By physically performing different methods of playing with a toy eventually they found the proper way. Vygotsky’s beliefs were also represented in the video of the toddlers playing. The teacher’s use of Vygotsky’s method of scaffolding the children’s development in order to increase their learning. Vygotsky believed that learning should be done in a social context such as a classroom; this is reflected in the video when the children are playing in the playroom. (Brewer, 2007, p.9). In this social context the learner is supported by a teacher to enhance their skills with the assistance. During the next step, the teacher will slowly release control over the activity until the child is able to preform the skill alone (Brewer, 2007, p.30). The children in the video are still young and being taught a number of skills with the help of a teacher but slowly they will begin to preform these skills with less help and direction. Lastly, Erik Erickson’s concept of creating a sense...

...to be completed by the tutor / supervisor. Section 1 Briefly outline your research questions or aims I observed in my bi-lingual kindergarten classroom that students are not aware of the significance of literacy skills. Students do not show an understanding of a constructed writing lesson and cannot relate what is being learned to everyday life. Therefore I believe that young children’s understanding of literacy as meaningful and purposeful, and not merely an abstract skill to be learned, is a critically important part of learning to communicate, read and write. For my case study I have decided to look at the following questions and observe these through different role play and teacher lead activities in the classroom. What types of scaffolding techniques enhances emergent literacy skills in a bi lingual environment? How can a positive attitude towards writing be encouraged? Section 2 Briefly outline your proposed methods and sites of data generation and your proposed methods of sampling During this case study project participants will be expected to answer a series of questions about their feelings and understanding of literacy. Participants will also be expected to take part in role play activities and literacy exercises during the course of the study. During the study, participants will also be asked to complete and partake in specific writing exercises. At the end of the study participants will be asked a second set of questions to try and establish their learning and...
