...making decisions for them—decisions they might not be too happy about. Now imagine this: their parents don’t have any control over their decision, but instead the government is telling them what they can and cannot do. This is becoming more and more of a problem recently with the regulation of children’s school lunches. The government is intervening too much, and they overstepping the boundaries in the lives of this country’s citizens. What people choose to do with their money should be their responsibility. The government needs to take a giant step back when it comes to something everyone enjoys and is a big part of everyday life: food....

...School Lunches Remember those school lunches that they used to provide for us throughout elementary all the way up to high school, and if they did not they were about $2.50 a meal. Some kids hated them, others liked them and others just didn’t care as long as they had something to eat in between classes. The importance of school lunches is very high. Many kids always complain about the food, but for some it’s a blessing to them because that’s often their only meal due to their parent’s income. The lunches usually contained a milk, a juice of your choice and a small meal. Breakfast meals varied from cinnamon rolls, to French toast, to burritos, to pizza bagels. Lunch consisted of burritos again, salads, chicken, burgers, macaroni and cheese, chili cheese and beans with crackers or tostadas. And again, any of those meals along with a carton of milk and a juice were only $2.50, of...

...their health, especially during school lunch. Schools lunches normally consist of quick and easy options like pizza, chips, soda, etc., all foods that when eaten regularly can lead to serious health problems. Children are prone to these eating habits everywhere and have learned from school. It’s for reasons like this that obesity in children has doubled in the last 25 years. What was once known, as Adult-Onset Diabetes is now common within our youth and caused from childhood obesity. An article from USATOADAY titled “Unhealthy Risks for Kids Tip Scale” explains this, also going into detail about the debate between enforcing healthy lunches for students and keeping junk food in schools. Though fattening foods may be easily prepared, is the timing really worth the lives of our kids? Could a healthier diet at school make for a healthier lifestyle? These questions need answers. Let us begin. In order to get something accomplished, you must involve the government. An article from the Washington Post titled “Junk Food Widely Available at U.S Elementary Schools Despite Anti- Obesity Push” explains this and how federal regulation is necessary in order to enforce healthier school lunches. With childhood obesity increasing, more people are witnessing the epidemic and wanting an end to it. A study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation highlights this and describes their proposal that would set standards for nutrition and food/beverages sold in schools. ...not surprising. The part that I really enjoyed about the movie is when he talked about nutrition in schools. Something needs to be done. The first school he went to was in Naperville, IL at Madison Junior High School. The one thing he really emphasized on was that the kids there weren’t making the right food choices. Most of them got chips, fries, or pizza. Some of them just are fries. The cafeteria staff backed it up by saying that they probably brought a lunch from home, or they are sharing that food with other kids, when really they weren’t. In my opinion if they are trying to make the kids make the right choices then they need to have a better selection of healthier food for them. They don’t even cook food in schools anymore; it is all pre-packaged and frozen. They take it out of a box, warm it up, and serve it. In the movie they Morgan said that on average there are over 1,000 calories in one meal. That’s outrageous. Nobody should be eating that many calories in one meal. Morgan visited Appleton Central Alternative School in Appleton, WI and found that they have improved their student’s behavior not by discipline but by diet. “Wisconsin’s Appleton Central Alternative School hired a local organic bakery that helped transform Appleton’s cafeteria fare from offerings heavy on meat and junk food to predominantly whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables” (School Lunches, P. 5)....

...Pack-iTS * Ease of management and student satisfaction for school administration * Value for money, able to the variety of choices, and food preparation safety for individual parents * variety and taste for students * Quality based on nutritional value for packaged lunch * Offered bi-monthly for hot lunch days 2. How should Pack-iTS be positioned against the competition? Pack-iTS should position themselves against the competition by targeting the three key consumers, school parents and children. They should target the parents by illustrating the benefits of Pack-iTS pre made lunches. One of the main concerns that parents had was not being able to spend more time with their kids while trying to juggle a work and home life. So Pack-iTS should lead with how using their service will save parents time instead of buying and preparing school lunches for their children. Giving them more time to spend with their kids and not having to stress about what their kids are going to eat. Pack-iTS should also stress the importance of nutrition to the parents and that pack-its is committed to making healthy meals for their kids. Pack-its only real competition is the brand name lunches offered by Kraft and Schneider’s, but these choices are less healthy options for children. They other competition would be the hot lunches that were offered by local businesses. In this case Pack-iTS should demonstrated that these lunches are only offered bimonthly and wouldn’t accommodate working...

...Background In April 2008, six Brescia University College students: Kathryn Kielstra, Breanne MacHardy, Lynn Mockler, Tara Price, Sunali Swaminathan and Ruth-Elen Tisdale were nearing the completion of their Management and Organizational Studies Program. They were considering launching Pack-iTS, an entrepreneurial venture. Pack-iTS would be a healthy lunch preparation and delivery service, serving elementary schools within the Thames Valley District School Board in London, Ontario. The six-person partnership had$25,000 to invest, but needed to know if additional financing would be required. The Pack-iTS lunch program would provide flexibility for parents and children. Parents would select from a variety of menu options, as well as the regularity. The lunches would be prepared and assembled at a Pack-iTS facility. The lunches would then be marked with the teacher’s name and put into a container for delivery. A consideration for the partners was to position the program as a fundraising initiative, where a portion of the gross sales would be donated to the school. The main objective of Pack-iTS is to promote healthy eating habits and reduce parental stress associated with planning. According to results from a Canadian Community Health Survey, obesity rates among children and adults had increased substantially during the past 25 years. In 1979, three percent of children aged two to 17 were obese. By 2004, eight percent were obese. The partners were looking to gain...
