...The term “scope of practice” is defined as the actions, procedures, etc. that are permitted by law for specific professions. It is restricted to what the law permits based on specific experience and educational qualifications. In order to determine a task is within your scope of practice you need to follow three specific steps like define the issue, review laws, rules, standards etc and make the decision. When we get a task to do we must clarify the specific activity and we need to obtain additional information about the tasks like the policies and procedures in the facility. Then we have to do a self-assessment to make sure that we are capable enough to do that. Because once we accept the task, we were the one accountable for that. Sometimes common practices in the facility may not be legal in terms of the tasks by the nurses. Working outside the scope of practice could potentially a reason for the disciplinary action against our nursing license by board of nursing. Based on these elements we should decide whether we are willing to accept the consequences of our own action, if not do not perform the activity. When I started working in the surgical ICU after my orientation, they assigned me a patient who was 1st day post op after bariatric surgery. I knew that nurses needs to have bariatric surgery certification to take care of the patients. I did not have that certification that time. In addition, if anything happen adversely, the surgeon will definitely ask about the nurse...

...been asked to investigate a new procedure that physicians would like nurses to adopt in the hospital. Discuss the process you would apply to determine whether the procedure falls within the RN scope of practice and how you would go about introducing the new procedure with physicians and fellow nurses. When it comes to investigating a new procedure, a systematic approach should be applied. It is imperative to determine whether a given procedure is within the nursing scope of practice before deciding to adopt or implement it. Some standard steps that must always be followed are based on the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Standards of Practice, rights of patients, and safe nursing practice. According to Anderson (2013), determining if a new procedure is within the scope of nursing practice can be accomplished in three steps. First, define the issue, which means clarifying what exactly is being asked and what the new procedure entails. This step also includes gathering any additional information such as conducting a competency assessment to perform the task, as well as any previous experience, current knowledge and skill. Evidence-based practice and nursing research must also support the adoption of any new procedure. Secondly, since evidence is not the only component, the Nurse Practice Act and the policies of the workplace must also be considered. Nurses may be limited by the facility policies/standards to perform certain tasks even though the tasks are allowed by the BON (Anderson...

...The professional nurse's scope of practice is defined and outlined by the State Board of Nursing that governs practice” (Nettina, 2013, p.16). ...HLT-307 12/05/2015 Michelle Davis Role of the Provider and Scope of Practice Many only know of doctors and nurses who provide care, but in reality there are many health care professionals behind them that work together to provide them with the proper care they need. There are so many health care professionals that work together and form a work flow to maintain the proper and correct care given to each and every patient that they rely on each other. If one of the professionals were to fall out of sync with the rest of the team then it causes the patient care to fall. In particularly many do not know of cardiovascular technicians and respiratory technicians they are as equally important as nurses and doctors. In this paper I will explain the roles and scope of practice of both cardiovascular and respiratory technicians have in health care, the skills and education needed, and about patient-centeredness. Respiratory and cardiovascular technicians go hand and hand with each other because our body relies on our heart to pump and breathing is the most important thing we all need, therefore a respiratory and cardiovascular technician work closely together to provide for the patients. The role of a respiratory technician is “Respiratory therapists care for patients with both acute and chronic breathing problems across the entire age spectrum.” (Becker & Nguyen, 2014). The job of an RT is to manage and care for those who have respiratory issues. For a cardiovascular...

...The Scope of Practice of a Physician Assistant The term scope of practice has been defined as “The definition of the rules, the regulations, and the boundaries within which a fully qualified practitioner with substantial and appropriate training, knowledge, and experience may practice in a field of medicine or surgery, or other specifically defined field. Such practice is also governed by requirements for continuing education and professional accountability” (Defining Scope of Practice, n.d.). Physicians, nurses and all other medical professionals are required to know what their particular scope of practice includes and to adhere to those guidelines at all times. Many different types of healthcare professionals are found in an Emergency Room facility, and they will all have a scope of practice that they must adhere to. One such healthcare professional would be a PA or a Physician Assistant. A PA must work under the supervision of a Physician who is ultimately responsible for the PA’s performance and professional conduct with the patient. Any medical procedures that the supervising Physician performs in his scope of practice may be delegated to the PA, as long as the PA has had the necessary training and competency to successfully perform the procedure (Rogers, 2007). In an Emergency room setting a PA may be responsible for such patient care activities as evaluating incoming patients through the process of obtaining a complete and accurate health history, conducting physical...

...of modern nursing. The passage of time witnessed the evolution the nursing profession where the scope of nursing expanded with the advancement in technology and the changes in the healthcare and politics. Earlier, nurses were prohibited from using thermometers and interpreting results (Sandelowski, 2000), taking blood pressure reading and interpreting readings (Mee, 2006; Sandelowski, 2000), carry out measurements of the pulmonary artery wedge Mee, 2006), removal of peripheral arterial sheaths (Capasso, Codner, Nuzzo-Meuller, Cox, &Bouvier, 2006), or take chest x-rays after peripherally inserting central catheters (Davidson, Bloomberg, &Burnell, 2007; Royer&Earhart, 2007). All the former activities are considered to be within the scope of modern nursing. As is the norm with any other practice changes, evidence has to support the adoption. However, evidence cannot be only component for an evidence-based practice model (LoBiondo-Wood&Haber, 2010). Nurses have to take into consideration the Health Professions Act (HPA) (CRNBC, 2005), the rules and regulations of provincial board of nursing, organizational procedures and policies, and standards that are recommended by professional organizations. These recommendations are offered with respect to clinical competence, educational preparation, patient preferences, and practice setting and environment. The scope of practice is not only responsive and dynamic, but also bidirectionally influenced by the factors like research...

...The fact that nurses must take responsibility and accept accountability for practicing within their legal scope of practice, makes it a major factor for every practicing nurse to determine whether a new procedure when thrown at them falls within their scope of practice before adopting such procedures. Knowing exactly what the new procedure is, its relevance to the patients, will go a long way to determine what process to follow in making this decision. Also knowing the rational or the reason behind the adoption of the new procedure, the benefits especially towards improving quality of care of the patients, will be of importance to. Using the RN scope of practice of the state as a guiding principle will be a priority. Do I have the skill, the training and the knowledge required to carry out the task? The nurse practice acts of each state is a tool that should guide every nurse in making every practice decision especially when in doubt, in order to be legally accountable for their practice. Evidence based practice will be my next consideration. Has the new procedure been tested, researched, approved, in other words has it been approved as an evidence based practice which is generally viewed as; the integration of clinical expertise, patients values and the best research evidence into the decision making process of the patient. Policies and procedures of the governing institution will also be put into consideration. What does the institution’s policy say about the...

Dr. Hsu telephoned Kayla asking her to interpret Mrs. Warner’s ECG, sign his name, and fax the report to her referring internist. Although Kayla has extensive training performing ECGs it is not within her scope of practice to interpret ECG and sign a medical document on behalf of a physician. However, she is licensed to perform ECG. Without any formal education or license she is unable to interpret an ECG. Performing ECG is much different then interpreting one. Performing an ECG is taking an order from a physician to perform a task. Signing on behalf of a physician would be against AAMA guidelines. Given these facts, this paper aims to investigate, through practitioners' perceptions of value, which agile practices are being used to improve two performance criteria for software projects—cost and scope. Using a multivariate statistical technique known as Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), the results suggest that the use of agile practices can be represented in factors which describe different applications in software development process to improve cost and scope. Also, we conclude that some agile practices should be used together in order to get better efficiency on cost and scope in four development aspects:...

...Media Idea of Nursing----Discussion Question 3/1 2-11-14 Some of the positive things that the media portrays in nursing are the following. Some TV shows the different roles of nursing, they show nurses in the ER, OR, working with the elderly, and children. They show that the nurses interacting with the patients, they show about HIPPA laws, when you see them talking about patient confidentiality they do it in privacy. The news shows the media how hard working the nurses are in emergency situations such as hurricane Katrina, hurricane Sandy. In an article that I read people were interviewed about how they viewed RN’s. And 77% of the people interviewed stated that nurses had a positive impact in their lives, gave them a great respect for the profession, that nurses work very hard and long hours. This article also suggested that the elderly were speaking more on topics like patient safety, and lead to more respect for nurses. This article also suggested that even on the negative side of nursing such as shortage, which the public contributes to salaries, and lacks of benefits nurses were still respected. Nurses’ being on strike is a negative look, but the public still portrayed nurses as a respected profession. 81% Hispanics, 63% of whites, and 61% of blacks all have a great respect for nurses. Both Rn’s and the public were interviewed and asked if they would recommend nursing as a career. And it shows that 44% of RN’s would recommend nursing as a career. Verse...
