...London 2012 Olympic Games Case 1. The core problem or issue in the case The core issue in this case is the “tradeoff decision between revenue generation and attendance”. Further, we can say that these issues are problematic like: * Maximizing ticket revenue without charging high price for it. * Peoples’ willingness to pay for specific event * Appeal of the sport (global and local) * Stage events (opening and closing ceremonies) * Particular team or athlete * Limited guidance for pricing tickets from past events. * Every city’s taste and preferences matter * Reach of the games by location * Internet ticketing * Recent global financial crisis * Maximizing attendance by selling to the right person and ensuring their presence. * Generating genuine enthusiasm is important * No empty arenas and stadia * Knowledgeable spectators * Selling ticket for the infamous sports in preliminary rounds like table tennis, archery, handball, etc. * Price differentiation among each sport. * Promoting every sport * Delicate issue * Secondary market for tickets. 2. The dilemma of Williamson – explain the stances and support one of them Paul Williamson, head of ticketing for 2012 Olympic Games, he and his team is facing the dilemma while developing policies for pricing and distribution of tickets for the games. ...Chilean Miners Trapped and Rescued Tyrone Norris BCOM/275 February 20, 2012 Velonta Adams Chilean Miners Trapped and Rescued The Chilean miners’ accident was surely a frightening incident for the miners themselves and their families. This incident that occurred raised a great many of questions of whom the Chilean President, Sebastian Pinera was faced to answer. With all things considered, it would have been to his credit to ensure that as many facts as possible be gathered to deliver information about the accident to families and the media. The Chilean miner’s accident was examined from many different perspectives and shed light on the position of the company, Compania Minera San Esteban Primera, as to their concern for the safety of the miners based on the condition of the roof which collapsed. His statement that was communicated to the public was, “The cause of the roof collapse, about 1,100 feet (350 meters) below the surface, is being investigated.” Chile Mine Collapse: Facts about the Amazing Survival Story, by Wynne Parry and Rachael Rettner. This incident was telecast around the world almost as quickly as it happened and some things to remember are how the families and peers of the miners felt during this tragic event. They would be left guessing day to day about the well being of their loved ones and fellow co-workers. The media would have needed to be very delicate in the delivery of this astounding news to the world because it would be also heard by those...

...30/05/2013 The Organising Committee for the London 2012 Olympic Games (LOCOG) has today published its final report and accounts for the six-month period to 31 March 2013. These will be the final accounts prepared by the company, which should shortly be placed into a solvent Members Voluntary Liquidation. Over its eight-year lifecycle, LOCOG has successfully achieved revenues of GBP 2.41 billion through private sector revenue programmes and contained costs at GBP 2.38 billion. The full report can be viewed on the London 2012 website. Commenting on the announcement, LOCOG Chairman Seb Coe said: “One of our key objectives was to deliver an outstanding Games within a balanced budget and I am proud to say that we have achieved this, thanks to the strong management of our core finances. It means we can make payments to the BOA and BPA, allowing both organisations to move into their next round of Olympic and Paralympic commitments with some additional certainty, return monies to DCMS, while also leaving a legacy for the International Inspiration charity and Join In Trust for them to continue their excellent work.” This final result now means that LOCOG will make payments to the British Olympic Association (BOA) of GBP 5.3 million and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) of GBP 2.6 million to honour its contractual obligations under their respective Joint Marketing Plan Agreements. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will receive approximately GBP 20 million from LOCOG...

...CASE STUDY: London 2012 Olympics Games George Koduah UMUC MARKETING MANAGEMENT AMBA 650 9044 Dr. Tom L Trittipo November 20, 2012 CASE STUDY: London 2012 Olympics Games Draft. Introduction The successful organization and the London 2012 Olympics Games was an expected necessity for a program aimed at satisfying many aims and objectives including fostering the Olympic movement spirit, revitalizing economic condition, and developing infrastructural project and developing infrastructural projects to enhance the psycho-social well being of the/a nation. Identification of the strategic issues and problems The overall strategic issues revolve around achieving a ‘successful game organization’ by all standards, both domestically and internationally. The domestic components of success involves the participation of the local fans and population who must be seen to have patronized event as much as possible through fair pricing and proximity. The international yardstick for the measurement of the game relates to event organization, participation and patronage as well as meeting revenue targets. The major problems are how to strategically price tickets to the games to raise revenue and ensure equitable distribution, manage perception of observer-value judgment through television audience and other communication media worldwide in line with organizational objectives. There is also the need to ensure that, ticket pricing; accessibility, usage and the revenue implications help...

...Female Athletes Arise In 2012 Gender equality in the Olympics has been a common debate for years. The main argument from many is that women are always given the “short end of the stick” with little media attention compared to the men. Men are always given more clock time, mentions, and descriptions then women (Billings, 2008). This common trend has caused women in sports to falter, but in the 2012 London Olympic games female athleticism has seen a turn around and is now in the limelight. The London games have been dubbed “Year of the Women,” thus celebrating women in sports and giving them their own chance to shine. These award-winning female athletes are breaking down gender barriers and providing a sense of hope, inspiration, and confidence to not only female athletes but also women in general. Women’s athletics in the Olympics has been on the rise for years. Females were first allowed to participate in the 1900 Paris Olympics. From this point on, the number of athletes and events that women were allowed to participate in has continued to grow. In 2004, 40% of all the athletes were female. Since then, this number has increased to 42% in Beijing and 45% in the 2012 London games (IOC, 2008 & Haven, 2012). These results clearly show that female athletics has grown and is continuing to grow and become more popular. Reports show that for the first time in history the United States, whom is known to be an athletic powerhouse of male athletes, has sent more women...

...Explore how Faulks presents the different ways in which the characters cope with the realities of war in his novel Birdsong Sebastian Faulks uses the impact of the war to shape and add depth to his characters. The ways in which they cope with war, and the reasons for them to cope in this way, give detailed insights into the characters themselves. Faulks manipulates the character of Stephen Wraysford to begin the war as an extremely cold Officer, particularly towards Jack Firebrace, sending him for a court martial instantly, after a minor offence. Faulkes makes use of short, curt sentences in Wraysfords initial dialogue like “I doubt it.”This suggests harsh qualities, reinforcing the opinion that Stephen is a cold, removed character. Faulkes shows that Wraysford’s character softens towards his men, particularly the tunnellers, feeling empathy with their strange, but no less difficult path. This is shown in the contrast between the early parts of the novel where Stephen is almost exclusively referred to as “he” or “Stephen” and the later chapters where Stephen is referred to in a group with the tunnellers or other soldiers, making use of the pronoun “they” or “we” more often. Faulks presents Stephen as losing some of the isolated exterior by the end of the war that was the defining feature of his character at the beginning, This is shown in Stephen’s attachment to Jack Firebrace, presented by Faulks in the end tunnel scene. The strength of this partnership is shown in...

...Explore the ways in which the three texts present the suffering of soldiers in the war. World War One is known as “the war to end all wars”[1]. The war cultured “extreme suffering” which inspired many writers. The war also aided the advancement of attitudes towards the emotionality of men. Individual suffering is manipulated to intensify the pain by isolating singular characters. Sacrifices of the men force the reader into an uncomfortable atmosphere. Sebastian Faulks’ Bildungsroman Birdsong highlights the suffering of individual to understate that of the masses. Regeneration, written by Pat Barker in 1991, uses factual occurrences of Sassoon and Owen’s lives in Craiglockhart to detail historic experiences of suffering. The poetry features both pro and anti-war perspectives from historical figures featured within Regeneration. Birdsong emotively persuades readers that individual anguish has detrimental effects on soldier’s lives intensifying their suffering. The texts use third person narrative to create emotive circumstances which manipulate the reader into understanding the suffering as either mass or individual. The writers’ portrayal of individual suffering was the most poignant compared to the subversion of widespread suffering. The texts expose the stigmatization of physical disability as a cause of individual suffering. Historically, the dependence of disabled life reflects the burden faced by soldiers of returning to normality. Wilfred Owen’s poem Disabled explores the...

...Before when people hear the word "Love" the first thing that pops to their mind is love for family, friends, opposite gender, or sometimes for animals. But lots of people now a day’s love “things” like gadgets, clothes, books, cars, etc. Well my point is, today people almost love everything around them. Now let’s focus on “Books”, what are the advantages when you love books. First is Knowledge, when you read books everything that you read fills your head with new kinds of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to face any challenge you’ll ever encounter. Second is it Reduce Stress, When I’m reading a book, my mind shifts gears. Where I might have a stressful day, a book can easily distract me. Fiction and Sci-fi is fantastic for this. Reading an awesome book is perfect right before bed time. Though sometimes it’s hard to put the book down if it’s really good. Still, you’ll be relaxed. Lastly it widens our Imagination, when we read fiction or sci-fi books we usually use our imagination to enjoy the story. As a fan of fiction and sci-fi books it really is useful, cause when I’m reading it I feel like I’m with the protagonist having the best adventure we can possibly have. That is some of the reason why we should read, and why we should love to read. Reading helps us with our study and other stuffs. So to those who hates to read, they should start to read even it’s a comic, mangga, or magazine...

Tremendous efforts go into the planning and development of a mega event such as the Olympic Games. The vision for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games could potentially facilitate a substantial opportunity that will realize vast outcomes socially, culturally, economically and environmentally for the country beyond 2012 (“Times 100,”2012). However there are underlying concerns present that could potentially impact the local community, outweighing the benefits and the LOCOG’s efforts to achieve this vision. I will provide brief background information on the London 2012’s Olympic aspirations, and analyze the opportunities and debunk the concerns for the social, cultural, economic, and environmental aspects involved in delivering favorable results, according to the vision goals. I will follow with a discussion and analysis of the London 2012’s values and their effect on the goals of the Games. Then I will apply SMART methodology as a framework for measuring the London 2012 sustainability objectives. Finally I will evaluate opportunities for the local schools to become involved in the objective goals for London 2012. London 2012’s Vision Beyond the Olympic and Paralympic Games ...

...Chilean Mine Collapse The events surrounding the collapse of the Chilean mine on the 5th of August 2010 captivated the entire planet. For 69 days, the world shared in the pain of the 33 miners, their families, and the country of Chile. The situation seemed so dire that many doubted if the miners would survive. At one point “miners in the area were already placing wooden crosses outside (the mine’s) entrance” (Yang, 2010). We all watched as so many attempts were made to reach the miners and all were overjoyed when they were finally brought to safety from the bowels of the earth. It was triumph for the human spirit, but created several communication issues for the Minera San Esteban Primera company. Because of the differences in the audience it becomes important to understand how much information to share and what exactly to share. The families of the miners would need communication that would comfort them and reassure them that the company was doing everything that was possible to save their loved ones. For many of the families, the miners were the primary source of income, so it would be important for the company to communicate the importance of their safety and that their needs would be taken care of during the situation. Any form of communication should be to calm the concerns of the families. The company must also ensure that there was some form of communication between the families and the miners. Any communication to the families should be done face-to-face. ...

...As we all know, Olympic Games can bring great benefits to the host country. It can bring a great number of tourists to the country, which brings good chances to show the culture of the country to the world and get more economic benefits. It also can faster the speed of the development of the country. On the other hand, the Olympic Games bring many risks to the host as well. For London, the first and the greatest risk it facing is its weather. When we talk about London, we would mention its weather inevitably. The weather of London is so changeable that even the experts cannot forecast the weather accurately. According to statistic, in July and August, there is only 6.4 hours’ sunshine on average in London. That is to say, it has a great possibility to be rainy during the competitions, which will bring bad influence to both audience and athletes. Another risk is from the terrorists. Alan West, Minister of British security, said that the safety challenge London facing is the greatest since the World War II. During the Olympic, there were 15000 athletes, 14000 coaches and 20000 reporters coming to London, which largely increased the risk of terrorist attack. What’s more, in July 2005——the second day after London was chosen to be the host city of 2012 Olympic Games , there was a suicide booming happening in London, which caused the death of 52 passengers. So London should pay more attention on the security during the Games. Besides these risks, there are still many other...
