Self Reflection on Business English This semester I took classes from my dear teacher Linda Wu, and enjoyed good times watching the exciting and entertaining reality show The Apprentice. As we all known, The Apprentice is an American reality show hosted by real estate magnate, businessman and television personality Donald Trump. The show often starts with 16 to 18 business people competing in an elimination competition. The final prize is a one-year, $250,000 starting contract to run one of Trump's companies. As a symbol of the show, each episode typically ends with Trump eliminating one of the contestants with the words, "You're fired". Different from the Celebrity Apprentice, The Apprentice 10 shows how the ordinary business men or women, who have been influenced by economic crisis, competed with each other in every challenging project. The biggest change is to the rewards—unlike the often lavish rewards that had been granted in prior seasons to the winning teams, in this season, the winning Project Managers are rewarded with one-on-one meetings with some of America's best-known business leaders and CEOs. However since the season received the lowest audience figures of any Apprentice season, Mr. Trump confirmed that this format would be permanently discontinued after this season, and that all future seasons of the show would be in the Celebrity Apprentice format. In my opinion, this season’s conflicts between all the participants were much fiercer than the past seasons. Previous seasons when the competitors competing with each other they could still sometimes catch the feeling of a “team”, however at season 10 the show was filled with friction, lies, and accusing, even the most absorbing creative ideas were buried by dirty tricks and cruel reality. As a result we feel less interested in enjoying the show. On the other hand, it showed that the cruel economic crisis has badly affected how people struggling for their lives by these dirty tricks which would make the audience uncomfortable. As usual, the participants in season 10 were still divided into 2 groups, working separately as men’s team and women’s team. Men called themselves “Octane”, which is colloquially used as a short form of “octane rating”, the ability of reducing the engine knock, to show their anti-pressure ability. Women called themselves “Fortitude”, which refers to persons being brave calm and uncomplaining when they have experience something unpleasant or painful. In episode 3, the two teams were asked to organize and manage a doggy day care, create an attractive and satisfying way to serve the customers. James was the leader and finally Fortitude win the game because of their excellently more creative, more effective and smoother demonstration hosted by group leader Tyana, who has worked as a sales representative. On the other hand, since the owner hated the job that the men's team did and felt that James showed him a lack of respect by repeatedly ignoring his requests, James were finally fired as a frustrated leader. In addition, the conflicts in each team were aggravated in this project. In the team Octane, James prevented David from asking questions in the meeting with the owner because of his rebellion and recklessness, which infuriated David and made him more aggressive. In the team Fortitude, although they were the winner, Liza throw Poppy under the bus in the boardroom, which made her a target of the team and got attacked; Tyana’s refusing Mahsa to work the reception also angered Mahsa which put herself into the dilemma in the coming episode 4. In this episode the two teams were asked to develop a guerrilla marketing stunt—a viral video for Popcorn Indiana. This time the leaders of the two teams were Clint and Mahsa, and Octane win the project for their popcorn-fighting video was more entertaining and absorbing, which fit the require of the guerrilla marketing and a viral video. On the contrary, Fortitude, the women’s team, had have a better idea – eating popcorn in the gym, but the executives feel that it seemed more like a commercial and didn’t focus on the right demographic. The conflicts between the teammates also turn white-hot. At Octane, David had to withdraw from the task at the start of the day because of his broken teeth, although in my opinion it helped the men win the project to some degree. At Fortitude, the frictions among Tyana, Mahsa and Liza brought them to the boardroom and finally Tyana was fired for her complaining about the team’s concept and effectively being disloyal, while having no ideas for the video herself and no contributions to the team. Season 10 maybe was the most aggressive season I’ve ever seen. People survived the financial crisis build themselves a kind of weirdoes with intense and distrustful, which made them distinctive and impressive but negative. Here comes the in-depth analysis about this episode.
1. The key to winning this task What the anticipants need to do was to create a guerilla-marketing stunt to catch ablaze on the internet so that the company can propagandize their new product through Internet and virally spread it at low prize. In other words, this task was aim at causing a scene which could attract people’s eyes, and hope people can spread the funny videos on their own strong willing. That’s a kind of guerrilla marketing, getting maximum results from minimal resources. According to the concept definer, Guerrilla marketing was invented as an unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination rather than a big marketing budget. In my opinion, the two teams have both done a good job but it didn’t good enough to be a heating topic, since all their videos were too pretentious, lacked creativity, no public participants to enjoy the fun, and most importantly, was meaningless. So let’s take the McDonald’s “Cool off with $1 Drinks” video as an example, which I think is a fantastic way of guerrilla marketing. In the video, a huge “M”, consisted of coins frozen in a brick of ice, was set on the road, absorbing people to melting the ice then take the coins to buy a cup of drinks in the hot summer. This was a incredible new way to sell the company’s concept – delivering happiness in a low prize with attracting all the passers-by and the people on the internet by a few coins and a brick of ice in the heating summer. That’s the real way of guerilla marketing while the two teams’ videos were just a show. But, the men’s idea still could be interesting.
2. Lesson learned from the task Actually what impressed me most was the women’s leader Mahsa, a tough women working as an assistant district attorney. I don’t really like this person at all because of her aggressiveness, which made her teammates felt pressured and unwilling to work together in an effective way, leading to a bad understanding about viral videos and failure of the task. But she didn’t get fired for her overbearing, Tyana did for her disloyalty. In fact Tyana found their misunderstanding at first and has already complaint about it, however her failing to come up any solution to fix the problem but repeatedly complaining push her to the boardroom, without any contribution and just taking a backseat while others were crazily shooting videos. Don’t come to the leader with problems unless have a solution. That’s what I mainly learnt from the task. On the other hand, I always wondered that why neurotic David, aggressive Mahsa and termagant Liza haven’t been kicked out because of their poor teamwork. But with episodes passing by, I noticed that The Apprentice is not only a competition but also a show, which is bound to involve friction and fun to entertain the audience then win profits. And this may be the real business world.

...Self-reflection ppd plan This is a personal and professional development that shows a self-reflection of me using the skills audit discussed in the PPD sessions in the class room. This also provides insights of various strengths and weakness I possess and the various things which I want to develop during the course of my HND programme both in respect to my personal and professional development. It also gives out steps of how to achieve the same. Introduction I believe in the philosophy of improving myself as much as I can and in whatever way possible. I believe as surroundings change the challenge is to adjust to the change surrounding and try to adapt and learn what the new environment has in store for you. I believe each day bring a lot of opportunities for growth. My biggest strength I believe is that I believe in power of positive thinking and my utmost faith is in the fact that whatever happens, happens for good reason, so no matter how hard times I see, I take it as means for me to learning new things out of the whole experience and this make the journey of life more easy. Self-Reflection In my course or HND Hospitality Management and various PPD sessions which included the skills audit, time management questionnaire had helped me to do a self-analysis, of my own personality. Though there are various traits that I came across while answering the questions to the Kolb’s learning cycle and vak/vark learning styles self-assessment questionnaire, there were...

...Log Section 1 - Two reflective entries Reflective entry 1: New Beginnings Deciding to attend university as a mature age student was a decision I did not take lightly. I am working towards furthering my education in order to gain the necessary qualifications that will help me in my future business endeavour. I have found that after so long out of the education system it has been a difficult transition juggling study and work. The first units that were chosen for me in study period 2, I thought were difficult to understand having never written an essay before and without the knowledge or know how, I was not able to complete these units. SSK12 has given me a good understanding of what it takes at becoming a university student and in particular the skills on writing essays. As I have mentioned previously up until study period 2, I had never written an essay and did not fully comprehend how important the set out of a university essay was. Choosing an Essay Question was an important part of my learning in week 6 because this has now given me the beginning step in writing a university essay using the correct format. I am feeling a lot more confident when approaching the subject of essays as I now understand and have the knowledge on the procedure in completing an academic essay and what is required. The Influence on Magna Carter

...Magna Carter. Influence on economics rights: Magna Carter is highly economic in intent. The significance of Magna Carter partly lies in the reestablishment and protection of economics rights with its principles that people and their properties will be treated equally on a consistent legal basis and people are free to conduct business which are ground breaking at that time and fundamental on the account of world’s economic development. At the time when Magna Carter was published, the Law gave people back their property rights which were stolen by the King, the most famous event being William Marshall’s properties were cemented and later extend of the Forest Charter. This protection stabilized the development of real estate industry and enabled people to collect properties, which reinforced the economic growth and create a more stable environment or the economy. What’s more, before the Magna Carter was published and applied into law, people’s freedom of conducting business was highly restrained, which in turn stop English economy from thriving. The liberation of people’s economics rights made it possible for the free-trade market to grow and enabled the English economy to be more market-based. As the passage mentioned that the influence of Magna Carter is not static but dynamic in the long journey of forming the capitalism in modern society. The significance of Magna Carter is not just because its profound relevance for 800 years is a great achievement on the respects of...

Reflection In Health And Social Care

...This self-reflection is about a circumstance that occurred between me and a lorry driver where there was a language barrier between us. Throughout this reflection, I will be referring to the Gibbs (1988) reflective model to underpin and reinforce my discussion and reflection on this occasion. Description: This incident occurred on a Saturday morning at a food store of a large intentional business. I was the only warehouse operative on until that afternoon. After unloading the lorry, I noticed the paperwork was missing important information. I asked the driver about this and to get the information required to fill out the paperwork. However, the driver main language was Polish and couldn’t speak any English. But, I could not speak any polish as well. This then caused the incident as both of us could not understand each other or get the information that we require. Feelings: At the time of the incident, I was mainly confused towards the lorry driver. This is because, I didn’t know that lorry driver could not understand English, so I was confused...

Critical Thinking of Barriers

...Barriers to Critical Thinking One barrier to critical thinking is self-serving biases. Our actions do not need to be rationalized if the motives are good. But, even good motives can lead us into other thinking mentalities that can lead us to undesirable consequences and even pose a threat to our self-esteem. The characteristics of others even post a threat to our self-esteem. These ego threatening situations can cause us to form cognitive biases called self-serving biases. These biases reside in our thinking and perception, which help protect and enhance our self-esteem. Unfortunately, people lean towards seeing what they want to see and what they need to see to keep good positive feelings for themselves as people (Kirby, G. & Goodpaster, J., 2007). Another barrier to critical thinking is emotional influences. There are many aspects of emotional influences such as depression, anger and passion. Many studies of depression aid to the idea that irrational cognitions are correlated with depression. If an individual lets depression take over, the effect can alter their expectations and even cause a negative mentality to occur. Also, anger tends to alter emotional influences. Anger causes many negative relationships with others. It can show many irrational behaviors and thoughts. If anger leads to this we must lessen the impact it can cause. Having passion will aid if it is a positive impact of feeling. If the source of our passion is positive, then we...

Are Selfies Narcisstic?

...Introduction: Flash of Facts Only those living under a rock will be wondering what ‘selfie’ means. It is essentially a photograph of oneself taken by them self. It’s a simple trend that has infiltrated almost every corner of the social media world: people are holding their smart phone out at arm’s length, making a variety of faces—from the classic smile or serious face, to the more comedic duck face or sticking out one’s tongue– snapping a photo and then uploading it to social media profiles like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. In November 2013, the word "selfie" was announced as being the "word of the year" by the Oxford English Dictionary. The appeal of selfies comes from how simple they are to create and share, and the control they give self-photographers over how they present themselves.  So what is the hue and cry about this apparently harmless activity of clicking one’s own pictures? This is where an ancient Greek mythology helps us in understanding the etymology of the word ‘narcissist’ and the psychological state of a narcissist. It centres on a very handsome young man called Narcissus. So attractive was this man that all the girls fell in love with him. He was aware of his charms and this made him arrogant and proud. Despite the efforts of the ladies to win his affections he ignored their overtures. One day as Narcissus was walking through the forest he stumbled upon a clear pool of water. As he knelt to drink - for he was very thirsty- the loveliest sight that...

...Ethical and Moral Issues in Business Kenneth H. Niuman University of Phoenix Ethical and Moral Issues in Business How do you differentiate between ethics and morality.?How does ethics impact governance in business organizations. Ethics and morals may seem the same on the face of it, but if one were to analyze, there is definitely some difference. Morality refers to an adopted code of conduct within an environment and a set of agreed upon rules for what is 'right' and 'wrong'. Morals have formed the spine of modern society, religion and every individual's conscience. The conceptions changed in time and take on a new meaning. For example, killing a human being is immoral in any society but when on the battlefield soldiers are given medals for killing their enemy soldiers.. In a way, morality is in sync with ethics. While one is abstract in understanding, the other is defined and in the form of written code. Morality addresses the ethical queries on the moral outcome of a specific situation. The code of conduct formulated probes prohibitions, controversial behavior, standards of belief systems and social conformity of morally 'right' behavior. Moral codes define 'appropriate' and 'expected' activity. Community morality is usually defined via commentaries and codes of authority. Morality is better understood as an assimilation of beliefs about the essentials to lead a 'good' life. It is not to be confused with religious or fanatic or political preception. Moral codes are...

Moral Recovery Program

...NATION PATRICIA LICUANAN The events at EDSA in February 1986 not only ousted a dictator, but also demonstrated to the world and to ourselves our great strengths as a people. At EDSA we saw courage, determination and strength of purpose; we saw unity and concern for one another; we saw deep faith in God; and even in the grimmest moments, there was some laughter and humor. We were proud of ourselves at EDSA and we expected great changes after our moment of glory. Today, sometime after, we realize that most of our problems as a nation still remain. We may have ousted a dictator, but that was the easy part. The task of building a nation is so much more difficult. Now, with EDSA only an inspiring memory, we are faced with our weaknesses. Self-interest and disregard for the common good rears its ugly head. We are confronted with our lack of discipline and rigor, our colonial mentality, and our emphasis on porma (form). Despite our great display of people's power, now we are passive once more, expecting our leaders to take all responsibility for solving our many problems. The task of building our nation is an awesome one. There is need for economic recovery. There is need to re-establish democratic institutions and to achieve the goals of peace and genuine social justice. Along with these goals, there is a need as well to build ourselves as a people. There is need to change structures and to change people. Building a people means eliminating our weaknesses and developing our...
