Prostitution and Domestic Violence

...Tomas Del Campo Deviant Behavior Pestello 1/26/16 Sex Trafficking and Domestic Violence Parallels Sex trafficking and domestic violence are the result of the relationships between offenders and victims, on control, intimidation and violence within sex trafficking relationships, and on victims’ coping mechanisms. Warnath concludes that there is a large knowledge gap regarding the links between domestic violence and human trafficking, particularly concerning the interaction between the victim and the offender in human trafficking cases (Warnath 2007). The parallels between domestic violence and sex trafficking are that both can occur within a relationship, that neither are single events but rather an accumulation of acts in which forms of violence enter the relationship, and that neither are easy to stop. Some authors argue that prostitution per say is violence and is the same as domestic violence, and that all prostitution causes harm to women (Farley 2004; Stark and Hodgson 2004). We show the relational nature of sex trafficking through an analysis of police investigations into sex trafficking related to window prostitution in the Amsterdam red-light district during the period 2006. In the Netherlands, prostitution is a legal and regulated profession. In 2007, for instance, a literature study was published on the intersection between domestic violence and human trafficking (Warnath 2007). Sex trafficking is a form of trafficking in persons, which is defined in the UN Palermo...

By using Nevada where brothels are legal as a model for the rest of the country enforcing strict regulations can better protect those victimized by the industry. Legalization of Prostitution Prostitution is often referred to as the world’s oldest profession. According to a survey conducted by ABC News Prime time 15% of all American men have paid for sex and 30% of single men over the age of 30 have paid for sex ("POLL: American Sex Survey - ABC News", 2004). The sex industry is one that affects many American citizens. The National Task Force on Prostitution suggests that over one million people in the US have worked as prostitutes in the United States, or about 1% of American women" (Prostitution in The United States - The Statistics, 2007). Currently prostitution is illegal by Federal law Title 18 Part I Ch.117 Sec. 2422 under “Coercion and Enticement” and can carry up to a 20 year prison sentence ("Title 18 United States Code Crimes and Criminal Procedure", n.d.). Intervening in a Violent Situation Regardless of Gender Identity of Victim

...been done on violence within this community suggests that the violence against them is significant, increasing, and constitutes a serious public health problem in the U.S. (Witten & Eyler, 1997). We chose to analyze answers to questions on three separate vignettes, confidence in intervention choices (Chabot, Tracy, Manning & Poisson, 2009), gender transcendent scores (Baber, K., & Tucker, C. 2006), and transphobia (prejudice, discrimination, and gender-related violence due to negative attitudes toward transgender identity) scores. We sampled 112 students face to face from a small private liberal arts school. Our research showed no significant difference in intervention choices regardless of whether the victim was transgender. There was however a significant positive correlation with the gender transcendent score, verbal intervention, and indirect intervention (e.g. call police/911), but there was no significant correlation between the gender transcendent score and physical intervention. Because rates of violent attacks and hate crimes towards the transgender community are very high (Wilchins, Lombardi, Priesing, & Malouf, 1997) it is important to continue research on this understudied population to better understand how we can encourage change. Student Likelihood to Intervene in a Violent Situation is Unchanged Regardless of Whether the Victim is a Transman, Transwoman or a Heterosexual Female Classically, "gender-based violence" or "gender violence" meant any...
