...Running Head: ADOLESCENTS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES Adolescents Risky Sexually Behaviors and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Shemeka Y. Coleman Limestone College Abstract In today’s society many adolescents are engaging in risky sexually behavior that is leading to a widespread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s). Adolescents are at a high risk of sexually transmitted disease because of the lack of sexually education and knowledge about sex in general and the effects and consequences of engaging in risky sexually behavior without the proper education or knowledge of the activities in which they choose to engage. Over a third of all high school students report being sexually active and of those students, ¼ will contract a sexually transmitted disease before they even graduate from high school. This results in over a million teenagers a year who will get some type of sexually transmitted disease. (Krowchuck, 1998). Most adolescents do not have knowledge of exactly what a sexually transmitted disease is, let alone the different types of sexually transmitted diseases. With proper education of the different types of sexually transmitted diseases, symptoms, and prevention methods, adolescents will be better equipped and prepare for the consequences of the action of engaging in sexually behavior will occur. Adolescents Risky Sexually Behaviors and Sexually Transmitted Diseases On high school campuses around...

...as being able to tell which ones are not homosexual. I will be attempting to find out if people that are straight can also tell if someone is homosexual based on appearance alone as viewed in a full length color picture. I will be using 40 participants (20 males and 20 females) that either identify sexually as gay or straight. The participants will all be shown a series of 20 pictures for 30 seconds each, of males and females, and will be asked to identify whether they think the person shown in the picture is either straight or gay. The males and females in the pictures will have been previously identified as being either gay or straight. All results, statements and answers will be kept confidential. Does Gaydar Exist? The issue of a person’s sexual identity has always been a controversial issue for some. When it comes to the Gay and Lesbian community there is a saying or “Theory” that someone who identifies themselves sexually as homosexual has a sixth sense that is referred to as “Gaydar”. This means that for some reason it is believed that other homosexuals can spot each other out based on appearance alone. This idea that gays may have some sort of sixth sense or ability to tell if someone else is gay or not without that person verbalizing it themselves are been criticized and viewed as just stereotyping; However, if you socialize with anyone from the Gay and Lesbian community than you have probably seen Gaydar in action. Many argue that one cannot simply...

...Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI, followed by Gonorrhea. These two sexually transmitted infections are characterized by cervicitis. Cervicitis is inflammation or infection of the cervix. It can be either symptomless or cause bleeding on contact and purulent discharge of the vagina [ (Ricci, 2013) ]. Chlamydia: Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium known as Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacterium is hard to detect because many women are asymptomatic and do not seek testing. If left untreated it can cause serious and permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system; such as it can make it very difficult or impossible for a woman to become pregnant and can also cause fatal ectopic pregnancies and pre-term labor [ (Chlamydia-CDC Fact Sheet (Detailed), 2014) ]. It can also spread to a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes, causing pelvic inflammatory disease, and pelvic pain. If a baby is born to an infected mother, it may contract eye and respiratory infections during childbirth [ (Toro, 2008) ]. Chlamydia is most common among young, sexually active persons aged 14-24. This is nearly three times the prevalence of persons aged 25-39. Chlamydia is 6.2 times more prevalent amongst non-Hispanic black than non-Hispanic whites [ (Chlamydia-CDC Fact Sheet (Detailed), 2014) ]. Anyone who is sexually active can contract Chlamydia. Chlamydia is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. A person can contract Chlamydia through a male partner, even if ejaculation does not occur...

...Sexually transmitted infections (STI), also referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and venereal diseases (VD), are infections that are commonly spread by sex, especially vaginal intercourse, anal sex and oral sex. Most STIs initially do not cause symptoms.[1] This results in a greater risk of passing the disease on to others.[2][3] Symptoms and signs of disease may include vaginal discharge, penile discharge, ulcers on or around the genitals, and pelvic pain. STIs acquired before or during birth may result in poor outcomes for the baby. Some STIs may cause problems with the ability to get pregnant.[1] More than 30 different bacteria, viruses, and parasites can cause STIs.[1] Bacterial STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis among others. Viral STIs include genital herpes, HIV/AIDS, and genital warts among others. Parasitic STIs include trichomoniasis among others. While usually spread by sex, some STIs can also be spread by non-sexual contact with contaminated blood and tissues, breastfeeding, or during childbirth.[1] STI diagnostic tests are easily available in the developed world, but this is often not the case in the developing world.[1] The most effective way of preventing STIs is by not having sex.[4] Some vaccinations may also decrease the risk of certain infections including hepatitis B and some types of HPV.[4] Safer sex practices such as use of condoms, having a smaller number of sexual partners, and being in a relationship where each person only has...

...STD’s In America Jessica Ferguson Park University STD’s In America What you don’t know can’t hurt you right? Wrong. The purpose of this paper is to discuss sexually transmitted diseases and just how harmful and deadly they can be. Many people do not know that they are even at risk of catching an STD and even if they are already infected with one they may not have any symptoms leading them to believe that they have anything wrong with them and this can lead to passing the diseases on to their partners....

...STD's - Sexually Transmitted Diseases Sexually transmitted diseases, STD's, also known as Venereal diseases, VD, are spread through sexual contact, and the exchange of body fluids. Anyone who is sexually active can contract an STD. Most STD's don't show symptoms, so you can have, spread and even contract an STD without even knowing it. Some STD's are serious and others can have long term consequences. Some of the consequences could be infertility, certain cancers, and other chronic diseases years after initial infection. If symptoms do appear it may take anywhere from two days to a couple of months after initial exposure to appear. Some may take years to show up. One out of every five Americans carry a sexually transmitted disease. More than thirteen million are affected every year. Nearly one-fifth infected are younger than twenty-five years of age. Every year three million American teenagers acquire an STD. Adolescents are at a higher risk because they may have multiple partners, unprotected intercourse, and their partners are at higher risk. You would be at a higher risk of acquiring an STD if: you or your partner have had unprotected sex with someone, if you or your partner has had sex with someone after using drugs or alcohol, you or your partner have had sex after using cocaine, or you or your partner have used IV drugs. General Symptoms Some general symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases are genital sores, bumps, or blisters, pain and itching. In men some common symptoms...

...Sexually transmitted diseases For my research paper I decided to write on sexually transmitted diseases because it seems that we are hearing more and more about them. They are becoming more of a problem in the United States and it is fair to say that they are not going to go a way for a long time, if even at all. Sexually transmitted diseases can change a person’s life and even kill them. If a person wants to be sexually active they must understand the risks that are involved and how they can protect themselves. The first sexually transmitted disease that I want to talk about is chlamydia. Chlamydia, first of all, is a bacteria. The chance of being infected with chlamydia is very high among teenagers and young adults due to sexual activity. Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact, mainly vaginal or anal. It also has to be transmitted by someone that has been infected. Many people that have chlamydia do not even know they are infected, because they do not show any symptoms. To be exact, according to Engender Health, “there are about 75% of infected women and half of infected men have no symptoms of chlamydia.” The risk of a person becoming infected is very high if the person is engaging in unsafe sex, having sex with more than one partner, and being in a sexual relationship with someone who has multiple sex partners. To protect yourself and reduce your risk one should use condoms during sex, and limit your number of sex partners. (Engender Health) The symptoms...

...Safe Sex: Stop STDs and Unplanned Pregnancy Practicing safe sex to reduce the risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unplanned pregnancy should be on the minds of people who are sexually active. According to Mayo Clinic Staff, “T he organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids,” (“STDs” 1). Some STDs can be nonsexually transmitted during childbirth or pregnancy. Blood transfusions or shared needles can also transmit STDs. In fact, it’s possible to acquire STDs from people who appear to be healthy because STDs don’t cause symptoms in many people. The common STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV/AIDs, HPV (Human Papillomavirus), and syphilis (Most Common STDs, 1). Unplanned pregnancy is getting pregnant without planning it. Who wants to catch an STD or increase the chances of an unplanned pregnancy? If both parties say no, then it’s up to the individual to take responsibility to prevent it from happening. Safe sex should be practiced to reduce the risk of getting STDs and the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that is the most commonly reported STD in the United States. It is usually transmitted via vaginal or anal sex, but it can also be transmitted from oral sex. Approximately 50% of men and 25% of women have symptoms from this infection. The symptoms are pain or burning sensation when urinating...

...Epidemiology Betty Foote University of Phoenix Epidemiology: Global and Public Health NUR/408 Michelle Hogsed October 24, 2015 Epidemiology Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted viral infection found in young women that is one of the primary causes of cervical cancer. Sexually active young women, with many different partners, are some of the highest contributors and recipients in the newly infected population. Use of physical barriers, like condoms, during sex, can lessen this transmission. HPV is divided into two groups, low risk, nononcogenic types and high-risk types that can cause cervical dysplasia and in rare cases, cancer. Vaccines provide some protection against developing diseases caused by the virus. Epidemiological studies continue to evolve moving treatment forward for better patient outcome. Education is still the most effective way to deter this behavior that contributes to the HPV infection. Epidemiology is defined as “the study of the occurrence and distribution of health-related states or events in specified populations, including the study of the determinants influencing such states, and the application of this knowledge to control the health problems.” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 255). With HPV, public health officials and scientists are constantly following the occurrences of viral spreading and patterns of occurrence. Development of vaccines is based on this data and sample collection. Public health nurses...

...Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This sexually transmitted disease is curable, but left untreated it can cause complications such as sterility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and can affect other vital organs. Transmission is through oral, rectal, vaginal sexual contact. Symptoms include burning sensation during urination, white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis or vagina. If a person were sexually active rectally then symptoms would include rectal discharge, anal itching, rectal soreness, and painful bowel movements. Symptoms can occur between four to six days after being infected (Wikipedia.org). Treatment includes injectable antibiotics such as ceftriaxone and also a combination...

...What is Sexually Transmitted Disease? What are the Common Sexually transmitted diseases? What are the Cause of Each Sexually Transmitted Diseases? What are the signs/symptoms and Diagnosis? What is the complications? What is the Effect of sexually transmitted disease? \ S exually transmitted infection is a broader term than sexually transmitted disease. An infection is a colonization by a parasitic species, which may not cause any adverse effects. In a disease, the infection leads to impaired or abnormal function. In either case, the condition may not exhibit signs or symptoms. Increased understanding of infections like HPV, which infects most sexually active individuals but cause disease in only a few has led to increased use of the term STI. Public health officials originally introduced the term sexually transmitted infection, which clinicians are increasingly using alongside the term sexually transmitted disease in order to distinguish it from the former. STD may refer only to infections that are causing diseases, or it may be used more loosely as a synonym for STI. Most of the time, people do not know that they are infected with an STI until they are tested or start showing symptoms of disease. Moreover, the term sexually transmissible disease is sometimes used since it is less restrictive in consideration of other factors or means of transmission. For instance, meningitis is transmissible by means of sexual contact but is not labeled as an STI...

...Infectious Disease The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a kind of sexually transmitted disease that may be passed on to anybody coming into contact with one that is infected of the same, through coming into contact with a blood that is infected by the HIV, or even through the act of breast-feeding, upon entering and attacking the immune system of a person. Although it takes a couple of years for HIV to be felt by a person, it is also source of another permanent, life-threatening disease known as AIDS. Upon targeting the immune system of a person, it weakens one’s immunity, thereafter evolving into AIDS (HIV/AIDS, 2011). The most common symptoms that arise upon those who suffer AIDS/HIV are: night sweats, swollen lymph glands particularly on the neck, fever, joint pain, rashes, diarrhea, sore throat, muscle soreness, as well as mouth and/or genital ulcer (HIV/AIDS, 2011). Therefore, it appears to be somewhat an ordinary flu but continues for over a month or more once the virus enters the body. There will also be inflammation. Human Immunodeficiency Virus is most commonly known with the use of its acronym, HIV. On the other hand, AIDS stands for Acquired immune Deficiency Syndrome. Although both are often used interchangeably, contrary to popular belief, these two differ from each other. Among others, an important distinction that should be known by most people is that the immune system of a person suffering from HIV slowly deteriorates, making it impossible for the body...

...cause devastating short term affects on adolescents. This study will examine the possible causes of this type of behavior; primarily examining the aggressor. It will also detail some of the short term affects that arise among the victims, such as the psychological and social ramifications. It is also of necessity to note the possible solutions to prevent such actions from taking place. This is a problem that is worthy of much consideration and recognition because statistics show that by an alarming rate children are victimized by irresponsible assailants. Statistics show that by the age of 18, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused. An estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today. These alarming numbers are cause for much attention and concern. By the age of 8, more than 20% of children are sexually abused and 30-40% of all...

...Children Sexually Abusing Children Paula Chipman COM/172 August 25, 2014 Charlotte Babb Children Sexually Abusing Children Parents not only have to worry about adult sexual predators, but also have to worry about adolescent social offenders-which is on the rise. The background has a lot to do with how a child turns out. The fact that both male and female juvenile sexual predators exist is horrifying by itself. The sexual behavior that leads to sexual abuse can start as young as six years old (Smith, B. 2007, September 19). The thought crosses the mind of all parents. How do they protect their child? Unless they plan on following their child everywhere they go, they can only teach them and watch for the signs of both child predators and their victims. Everyone has to wonder what could cause one child to abuse another child sexually, and if they even understand the consequences of their actions. What will happen to the juvenile offender, will they get off with therapy, or will they go to prison to pay for their crime? The younger offenders are getting therapy while the older predators are going to juvenile detention centers or even to prison. When a child relapses a second time, the child could be sent to a child detention center, jail, or a mental hospital for the safety of the public. Most people are not exactly sure what child on child sexual abuse consists of. The fact is that child on child sexual abuse is when a younger child is sexually abused by one or more...

...Introduction The sexting trend is gaining popularity with both teens and adults. Haag and Cummings (2010), define sexting as “the sending of sexually explicit messages and/ or photos, primarily between mobile phones” (p.1). However, sexually explicit messages and photos can be sent through social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and over various electronic devices, such as tablets. Although sexting between consenting adults is considered an acceptable activity, both adults and teenagers are using electronic devices and social media outlets to engage in inappropriate sexual activities (Matte, 2013). Since many teenagers are not legal adults, the legal issues of teen sexting must be considered. In addition, the legal implications of adults abusing sexting privileges, particularly adults in positions of power, should also be considered (Stone, 2009). Teen Sexting Teen sexting is a highly controversial topic. Although many teens are sexually active, teen sexting should be illegal. According to Matte (2013), “Sexting is currently illegal under federal law. It falls under the creation, distribution, and possession of child porn and is a felony offense” (p. 1). Nevertheless, many lawmakers are striving to reverse this law (Matte, 2013). Many people accept sexting as an innocent activity because sexting often takes place between consenting adults (Stone, 2009). However, even adults can abuse sexting privileges. For example, sometimes men and women...
