...Who is Sammy? In the short story “A&P”; Sammy serves as the protagonist, main character and narrator. The story is told from his point of view, which I believe is very interesting because the narrative changes if this story is told from one of the other character’s point of view. This story takes places in a small conservative community with conservative views. Sammy is a 19 year old who works as a cashier at A&P grocery in a small town. Sammy can be described in many ways. He is very opinionated and observant of his surroundings. From the beginning of the story Sammy is seen as somewhat immature. Sammy seems to be very uninterested in his job but rather taken with its customers. I can relate to that somewhat. Retail can be so boring and mundane at times that you have to do something to help the time go by. He comments on everyone and everything. This serves as his entertainment to get through the day. In the story he quickly analyzes the girls as they come in the store. In fact, in the very first sentence Sammy says “in walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits”(Updike 32). It is quite an attention grabber. Sammy finds most people in town are followers and do the same thing. However, he notices “Queenie” is different. He is almost infatuated by her “sweet broad soft-looking can”(Updike 33). Based on the way he describes the girls he seems to judge people based on appearances. He depicts everything from the texture and patterns of their bathing suits to...

...As the Time Draws Near This analytical essay will provide an analysis and interpretation of american writer Eowyn Ivey’s short story “As the Time Draws Near” (2012). The readers are introduced to the main character, Piper, who grew up in Alaska but later moved away. The short story follows her at a time when she has returned to Alaska in order to spread her dead father’s ashes under a particular spruce tree. She has a lot of thoughts about death and she is almost obsessed with it. Death is the focal point and theme in this short story. It raises questions such as what happens when we die? And what is death really? The story tells about our short time on earth and how fear of death can stand in the way of living life fully with all the experiences the current moment offers. This essay will focus mainly on setting and the father’s outlook on life. Furthermore this essay will also include an analysis of the symbolism in the short story. At the beginning the description of the nature in Alaska is a vivid portrayal followed by a number of incidents where people have been killed in or by this nature. Piper’s father is one of these people, he “falls out of the sky.” (p. 1, l. 10) Her father with the name Red lived his life like it was an adventure. The description of the landscape appears in the same way - like a never-ending adventure. The tundra is a big and open landscape. The mountains, the glaciers and the snow continues into infinity. The same infinity that Piper’s father...

...HOW TO WRITE A LITERARY ANALYSIS ESSAY The purpose of a literary analysis essay is to carefully examine and sometimes evaluate a work of literature or an aspect of a work of literature. As with any analysis, this requires you to break the subject down into its component parts. Examining the different elements of a piece of literature is not an end in itself but rather a process to help you better appreciate and understand the work of literature as a whole. For instance, an analysis of a poem might deal with the different types of images in a poem or with the relationship between the form and content of the work. If you were to analyze (discuss and explain) a play, you might analyze the relationship between a subplot and the main plot, or you might analyze the character flaw of the tragic hero by tracing how it is revealed through the acts of the play. Analyzing a short story might include identifying a particular theme (like the difficulty of making the transition from adolescence to adulthood) and showing how the writer suggests that theme through the point of view from which the story is told; or you might also explain how the main character‟s attitude toward women is revealed through his dialogue and/or actions. REMEMBER: Writing is the sharpened, focused expression of thought and study. As you develop your writing skills, you will also improve your perceptions and increase your critical abilities. Writing ultimately boils down to the development of an idea....

...Analysis and interpretation - Wood Grouse on a High Promontory Overlooking Canada The text “Wood Grouse on a High Promontory Overlooking Canada”, 1996, is an American short story. In the short story we hear about the relationship between two brothers, the brother Bud and the older military brother Gary. The theme in this short story is brotherhood. These two brothers reconnect after spending time apart, and they grow to appreciate each other. Bud is a boy who is 15 years old. Bud is a bit naive. We can see that when he throws the rock at a bird. Gary asks him why and he replies, “I didn’t mean to hit one, Gary” p. 4 l. 46. This shows that he is a bit naive, and he is not thinking about the consequences of his actions. Another example is when he asks, “I was young and I didn’t know any better. So instead I asked him about the thing on my mind: “Did you kill anyone in Vietnam?” p. 4 l. 70-71 This also shows that Bud is naive when he asked without thinking about Gary’s feelings. After Bud asked this question he could see that it was hard for Gary to talk about and he therefore felt ashamed “And then I couldn’t fall asleep that night; I felt ashamed of myself.” p. 3 l.92. You can say that he acts, and then thinks about the consequences later. Gary is an adult who have been in war in Vietnam. Gary keeps on mentioning the beautiful things he is seeing around him, which is a big contrast from what he came from down there. “They’re beautiful” Gary said “Just...

...Analysis and interpretation of “School Run” They say that love is not about appearance, money or what other people think about the person you fall in love with. Love comes from the inside and you do not achieve true love by being materialistic. But is this true? How about the social norms? Would you be able to love a person, that your family and friends do not appreciate, because he/she is too different and cannot live up to the social norms? Would you be able to love this person and stay true to yourself? In the short story "School Run" (2013) by Kate Marsh, we are told that the narrator and her husband, Magnus, are happily married, even though the narrator's friends do not appreciate him, because he is not living up to the social norms. “School Run” has an epical way of narrating and a single-stranded story line, which is a part of making it a short story. In this short story there is a first person narrator, but we do not know what the name of the narrator is. It can be seen that the changes in time and place are not separated into different sections, but it is possible to separate the whole text into different periods of the characters’ life. Even though that the changes in time and place are not separated into different sections, it can be seen that the events are told in a chronological order. There is a lot of information in this story, it is like the author is writing a biography on a limited number of pages, where the narrative is jumping past certain periods...

...Analysis interpretation of ’Me and my Family’ “Me and my Family” is a short story from 1997. The narrator is a third-person limited narrator and is subjective because it conveys the thoughts, feelings, opinions of the father, Stew. So when the narrator is subjective, we only see the story from one side and therefore we cannot verify if the narrating is true. Beside Stew, we have Masha who is the wife of Stew and mother of Kitty. Kitty plays an important and great role in this short story. Apart from the family, we hear a bit from Norm (an acquaintance of the father) and other irrelevant people. Kitty has been living in South Carolina and is described as quiet, untactful and aggressive (p. 2, l. 25) by the narrator. When Kitty became a teenager, it has just gone downhill. She came out as lesbian when she was 16 (p. 2, l. 37) and that did not exactly help her relationship with her father. With downhill, the narrator describes; “He did not remember precisely when it had happened, but Kitty, his beautiful, happy little girl, turned into a glum, weird teenager that other kids picked on. She got skinny and ugly. ” (p. 2, l. 40). The quote illustrates one of the themes of the story that is the poor relationship between father and daughter and their quarrels, as can be seen on page 3, line 86: “He grabbed her and shook her, but he could not shake the conviction off her face.” However, this is from the father’s perspective. As mentioned before, we never get to hear Kitty’s side of...

...Analysis and interpretation of Susmita Bhattacharya's short story "Dusk over Atlantic Warf" The short story “Dusk Over Atlantic Warf” is written by Sismita bhattacharya in 2006. The Story “Dusk Over Atlantic Warf” takes place in Cardiff the capital of Wales, which the narrator informs us about. The story is taking place in the present time, because movie theaters, nightclubs, high school, Hollywood movies and Jennifer Lopez are mentioned in the text. The social environment in the text, is much as it is today in Cardiff, with nightclubs and movie theaters. The text start in Medias res, and the narrator is from a reliable third person narrative. The story is about Lata and her husband Anuj. Lata is married off by her father, to an Indian man named Anuj. The Indian couple is living in Cardiff. Anuj has lived in Great Britain for six years and Lata has been in Great Britain for 4 months. One day she is looking out of the window and thinking about her neighbors. She finds the day dull and she want to do something exciting. Lata and Anuj were going to the Atlantic Wharf theatre and watching a Bollywood movie. Lata is fascinated of the movie because it is an Indian movie and therefor recorded in India. Instead of watching the movie, Lata is telling about the things in the background. After the movie she is sad and crying. Anuj is overwhelmed and ask her if she is alright. She said that she is alright and wants to go home. Lata is the main character in the short story....

...key to an exultant life. But what if a person is unable to communicate about feelings? One of the main consequences can be the end of ever obtaining real intimacy which can lead to loneliness and low self-esteem in the end. In the short story “Sorry for disturbing you”, the protagonist Richard Knight broaches several current issues in our postmodern society. The short story, however, is also characterized and concerned with eternal questions such as helpfulness, loneliness and especially the importance of communicating and how you are able to deal with it. I will, through my analysis, interpret the short story based on the main aspects of the text that we can relate to our own society. Subsequently I will put it into perspective by discussing Love Poem by Douglas Dunn (1969) and The Ambulance Box by Andrew Phillip (2009). The main character Ian is the central point of the current questions that have been brought up. The text involves a third person limited narrator, and the personal view is based on Ian’s observations because we only get an insight view on his thoughts, which means that the portrait of others are made entirely on the base of Ian’s perception of them and especially how he appears in front of his relations. The story starts in media res, right as Ian opens the door to find a stranger named Michael standing on the doorstep. Right when Ian sees him standing outside the door, he is annoyed because he thinks that Michael is nothing but a drunkard. Ian...

...Therefor they want to escape from reality by ingesting drugs or drinking alcohol which could be their way of protesting against responsibilities and a search for freedom, or maybe it is just because they are in that age where they are open to all kinds of experimentations. This is what the main character Ellie is facing, in the short story “A Gap of Sky” written by Anna Hope in 2008; Ellie is wandering around in the streets of London and in her own mind as well. Her walk around London’s streets becomes a walk through her own mind. Crisis, confusion, changes, responsibilities and fear, are the main components of a short story by Anna Hope. A story which is intriguing, and will take you one step closer, to understand what a ‘typical’ teenager can go through. In this essay I will analyze and interpret Anna Hope’s short story A Gap of Sky. I will characterize the main character Ellie, and analyze her behavior as a teenager. I will also focus on the narrative technique in the short story and the importance of the city sitting. Though an analysis I will conclude upon my discoveries and determine the theme of the story. The main character of the short story, nineteen year old Ellie, is a university student and lives in London. She has...

...Analysis of “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston Western Governors University Humanities C100 July 19, 2015 Analysis of “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston Initial Reaction I suppose my initial reaction to “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston was one of disgust. The story shows “Delia’s” husband “Sykes” to be both physically and psychologically abusive as well as an adulterer. “Sykes” shows no respect for his wife, their marriage or the work she does. “Delia” works every day, and all her hard work pays for their home and puts food on the table. I found this to be most evident in this line “Mah tub of suds is filled yo' belly with vittles more times than yo' hands is filled it. Mah sweat is done paid for this house and Ah reckon Ah kin keep on sweatin' in it" (Hurston, 1926, p. 46). I found it very interesting that “Delia” has stayed with “Sykes” for 15 years despite his abusiveness and apparent failure to provide a stable income for them. I enjoyed that “Delia” finally decided to stand up to her abusive husband. By his initial reaction when “Delia” threatened him with a frying pan, you can see the “Sykes” is nothing but a bully. This is also made apparent by the way the gentlemen in the store were talking about him, even thinking of murdering him, but ceased their bravado when “Sykes” showed up at the store with his girlfriend (Hurston, 1926). Analysis Hurston’s short story was written in 1926 and given the obstacles of African Americans during that time it’s amazing it was...

...family? The short story, “The dress” of Julia Darling 2006, illustrates exactly that. It tells the story of the relationship between two sisters and their mother, and the consequences of their poor communication skills and repressed frustrations. In the following analysis and interpretation, I will unravel the tangled threads of the complicated affair, by giving a characterization of the mother and revealing the relationship between the sisters. In addition to this, I will touch on the symbolism, structure and the themes of the short story. The plot begins at home, when Rachel discovers that her sister has stolen her new silk dress. For the evening the family have planned to eat at a modern restaurant, and for the occasion Rachel, the older sister, has bought a beautiful perfect blue silk dress. Flora finds the dress, when she is home alone and finds it impossible to resist the urge to try it on. Suddenly she finds herself strolling down the street, feeling elite and confident all because of the dress; qualities she sees in her sister, but fails to see in herself. By accident she ruins the dress, and in desperation and fear she buries it outside the house in the garden. When they later meet up at the restaurant, Rachel is furious with her sister making an uncomfortable mood at the table. The mother, as the bereavement counselor and low self-confidence woman she is, tries to avoid the fight by babbling on about unimportant stuff like, what is on the menu, quote p. 2 of 5, 57-58: ...

... or living in the moment, requires you to let go of the past. You cannot hold on to the past, while living in the moment. This is the essential problem for the main character Andrea in the short story, Janus by Ann Beatie, she carries her past on her shoulders like it was the weight of the world. But how does past ruin the present? The main character Andrea is a divided individual, who is torn between a love from the past and her husband. First of all, Andrea is a divided self in the way that she is indecisive towards her husband and lover. Her lover made an ultimatum, which is seen in page 47 lines 38-43: “Her lover had said that she was always too slow to know what she really loved… When she would not decide in his favour, would not change her life and come to him, he asked what made her think she could have it both ways.” This clearly shows how Andrea cannot decide whether to leave her husband or not. Moreover, the quote shows how well the lover knows her compared to how little her husband knows her, take the following example: “When her husband first noticed the bowl, he had peered into it and smiled briefly… Her husband had pronounced the bowl “pretty,” and he had turned away without picking it up to examine it. He had no more interest in the bowl than she had in his new Leica” (P. 25 ll. 16-23). Comparing the two examples the reader gets the feeling that their marriage is loveless and uncaring, wherein Andrea’s relationship with the lover is the complete opposite....
