According to the article, “Herbal Medicine,” herbal medicine is defined as the use of “a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes.” Furthermore, according to the same article, herbal medicine began “long before recorded history.” Nevertheless, the herbal supplements did not become popular in the United States, until approximately twenty years ago. The rise in popularity is thought to be due to the high costs of prescription drugs and the urge to return to this “natural remedies.” Additionally, around eighty percent of individuals “worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some part of their primary health care,” according to the same article. One problem is that herbal supplements “are often mislabeled,” according to the article “Herbal Medicine.” This means that the supplements “may contain additives and contaminants that aren’t listed on the label,” according to the same article. Furthermore, some supplements have been “tainted with germs, pesticides, or toxic heavy metals,” according to the article “Dietary Supplements: What Is Safe.” Moreover, some herbal supplements have not contained the ingredients that are “listed on the label,” according to the same article. Also, some herbal supplements have not contained the amount of each ingredient that is “listed on the label,” according to the same article. Thus, one could use these problems to argue that herbal supplements should be regulated the same way that prescription drugs are

Fda Should Regulate Herbs

...Herbal Supplements The FDA should regulate herbal supplements as it ensures safety for the consumer. If taken properly, herbal supplements have great benefits. The problem is that there simply is not enough regulation of the herbal supplements. Many herbal supplements can be dangerous if taken incorrectly. What’s worse, people simply do not have enough information about the benefits and risks of herbal supplements. A great example of the lack of regulation is overuse of Ephedra. A while back, people started taking mass amounts of Ephedra in order to lose weight. It ended in a great amount of deaths, causing the FDA to take measures against makers of medicines containing Ephedra. Because it was considered an herbal supplement, it did not have the same scrutiny as synthetic drugs. Herbal supplements can be just as powerful as synthetic drugs, so the same vigilance in regulation should apply. Also, harmful ingredients sometimes end up in herbal supplements, which present an entirely new risk. If herbal supplements were more closely monitored, there would be a better chance of preventing this from happening. Because of the lack of regulation, consumers do not have any assurance that what they are buying is safe. Consumers need that assurance, especially when it comes to health products. There also is not very much awareness about herbal supplements. People do not realize how powerful some herbal supplements are. Many people hold the mistaken belief that herbal supplements...

Medical Marijuana

...Medical Marijuana ENG 215 By Medical Marijuana, the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is an extremely controversial subject. There are many supporters, as well as many that are in opposition to the use of marijuana in any situation. Parties on both sides of the issue are regularly bringing forth new information to endorse their case. Marijuana, made from an Indian hemp plant that bears the name cannabis sativa, is a mixture of stems, leaves, and flowering tops. The flowering tops are smoked for the tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, that is concentrated there. THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The use of marijuana as folk medicine began in Central Asia as far back as 3000 B.C. It’s use as a pleasure-inducing drug began in the 1900’s, becoming widespread in the 1960’s and 1970’s. In the 60’s and 70’s, marijuana became the second most popular drug, alcohol being the first. This trend continues today (Berger). Throughout the 1970s, public opinion about marijuana was mixed. A growing number of people were smoking marijuana to cope with medical problems that were not responsive to conventional medicine— particularly the pain and nausea associated with cancer and chemotherapy. Moderate politicians in both political parties began to argue in favor of marijuana decriminalization, which would waive serious penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. By the late 1970s, the American Medical Association, the American Bar Association...

Homeopathic treatment also can be therapeutic in treating depression. Good nutrition, proper sleep, exercise, and full engagement in life are very important to a healthy mental...

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Food Process Engg, Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences, Allahabad 211007 Corresponding author: genithaimmanuel@yahoo.co.in Introduction The tenet "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food," espoused by Hippocrates nearly 2,500 years ago, is receiving renewed interest, now popularly used for Functional foods. The term functional foods was first introduced in Japan in the mid-1980s and refers to processed foods containing ingredients that aid specific bodily functions in addition to being nutritious. The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board (IOM/FNB, 1994), Japan defined functional foods as "any food or food ingredient that may provide a health benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains." Functional foods are foods that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition due to certain physiologically active components, which may or may not have been manipulated or modified to enhance their bioactivity. These foods may help prevent disease, reduce the risk of developing disease, or enhance health. Rapid advances in food science and technology, an aging population, the rapid rise in health care costs, and changing government marketing and labeling regulations have also had an impact on the functional foods market. ...be very beneficial. The problem between these two opposing viewpoints is that there is no common ground between the two--for many practitioners it’s all or nothing. However, there is a new wave of healthcare that is gaining popularity in parts of the medical community, and it combines the two into what is called Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). Instead of leaning more to one side of either spectrum of medicine, CAM tends to combine the scientifically proven methods of alternative medicine with those of the more trusted and traditional methods of conventional medicine. This is truly a more beneficial form of healthcare because it addresses health issues from both angles, making people healthier in mind, body, and spirit, and thus should be implemented by more healthcare facilities and providers. Alternative medicine is a broad range of therapeutic and healing approaches including holistic medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture,...
